  • Here is the music video from the studio version of "The Lady in My Life" from Stanley's Magic Touch album on Blue Note Records.
This video was directed by Dick Fontaine, and the woman in the opening and closing scenes is Pat Hartley, who played the lead in the Jimi Hendrix movie Rainbow Bridge. Her real world connection to Jimi provided a kind of subtext to the story in the video. The dancer is Victoria Dillard, who went on to a successful acting career in television and film.
Regarding the recording and video Stanley says, "Michael Jackson's Thriller had taken the World by storm, and it featured this Rod Temperton song that I felt was so beautiful and kind of a sleeper, so I decided to include it on my album. Onaje Allen Gumbs wrote the arrangement and Al Dimeola was the producer. I'm honored that this track is now considered a smooth jazz classic. This video brings back a flood of memories because it was shot on the main corner where I used to play during my days as a New York street performer--48th and 7th."

One of Stanley Jordan's very best.
To be working alongside with great side artist like Omar Hakim and the late Onaje Allan Gumbs in keyboards is but a gift from God. The 80s was truly one of the last decades to have such diversity and extended range in music practically in jazz.

I saw this video when I was about 4 years old and I have always loved the playing on this track and I've watched this video many times especially later on with my wife. It wasn't until watching it today that I discovered that the video tells a very interesting and kinda haunting and strangely now relatable story. I think I was simply staring at the Ibanez the entire time 😆

Love this one! Everything! Including solo on kybds (cut out in this version) and Omar on drums. One of most frequently played tunes in my collection. I find it very energizing, I think because of the pulsation emanating from it

oh ... the original stuff from him is just elevator music with extra noodling. and that is why he got no where. Japanese Jazz was leaps better at the time.
And this isn't even his original ? lol.
I see why he is forgotten.
Musicians really gotta focus on COMPOSING a bit ...

what the heck is Japanese Jazz, is that just Jazz played by a Japanese National? Your mention of it is so random, why is it mentioned here when you are taking potshots at the artist and not a genre?

I agree with you that the uniqueness of his style was based on it's perceived difficulty/this is his best tune as he plays mainly octaves/ the "plinky" sound of the tapping is simply not everyone's cup of tea/ Jeff Healy had the same approach but it sounded like traditional guitar tone.

Did you hear his version of Bolero. I heard it in the radio crossing the Columbia River into Portland. I pulled over so I would buy it.
