I was eleven when this series hit the stands and was drawn to it by Spider-man’s new costume. It sparked a love of MARVEL Comics (especially The X-Men whom I’d never heard of prior to this comic) that’s lasted over 40 years.
Really happy that there’s a new reprint of this one. It’ll be cool if we can get an “alien suit Spider-man” omnibus to follow this one and the roger stern omnibus.

Zeck’s pencils on the issue #10 cover are insane.

I've lost, sold, or given away 99% of my toys from when I was a kid - but I've still got my Magneto, Cap, Spider-Man, and KANG Secret Wars figures haha!
Wish they would have added at least the first issues of each series(X-Men, FF, Avengers, etc) of when the characters returned. Just for reactions of characters that were left behind(Kitty, Sue, etc).
So glad they reprinted this. Going to lug it up to Austin to get it signed by Jim Shooter at a con in July :)

I actually prefer the old style look underneath. Plus, the logo reminds me of 90's Secret Defenders series which had a foil #1 cover.
I'm 99.9% certain it was Jim Rhodes in Secret Wars, not Tony Stark as you mentioned around the 7:30 mark. I recall a scene where someone sees him with his gauntlet off and he thought he was outed. I really enjoyed this series when I was a kid because I couldn't afford to get everyone's book so this had all my favorite characters for the low price of $0.75 an issue! And the changes to the status quo stood for awhile. I ordered the standard cover just because I love Zeck so much. Can't wait to buy it again in Masterworks format in #400! :)

This (well, actually Spideys new suit) was what rweally got me into Marvel!
I'm pretty sure it's James Rhodes Iron man in Secret Wars. Partly because of his dialogue (he asks alot of questions about Thor, for example, that Tony Stark should know the answer to) but mostly because of a scene in issue 8 which explicitly show him as black, also stating it outright.
Sweet, I haven't read the original Secret Wars in decades, such a fun series. Totally forgot this was coming out, thanks, Omar!
I remember event very well, with most major titles leading into the event.
If is a shame they didn't put I tgd pages from various related titles that saw the heroes going to Central Park or there return.
Mike Zeck pulled off a fantastic art job and I belive bob layton did a fill in or two if I remember the art duty well.
I ordered the DM edition and will be reading this for the first time in nearly 40 years.
I know SW2 was not so well received, but I do hope this will lead the wag for a reprint of that omni as well

Top 45 covers of all time sounds like a killer idea. I vote do it!
As a kid I used to love that scene of Spider-Man swatting the X Men, as it reminded me of the very first issue of Amazing (I think) where Reed Richards muses something along the lines of ‘if he’s that strong now as a kid, how much more powerful will he be when he’s older’….and then the fact that Marvel never let us find out and never bothered to evolve the character in any meaningful way, instead just letting him stagnate and stay basically the same from 16 to whatever age they have him pegged at now.
He did go from being able to lift 10 tons to between 15 and twenty five tons, got married, became a tech billionaire and then got bumped aaaaaaaaaaaall the way back to that ol "Parker luck" so yeah, I can actually agree to some extent.

This is my most favorite omnibus that I own. When I started collecting comics in the mid 80s this was the jam. I bought the original omnibus several years ago and it brought back so many nostalgic memories. Great review!
And don't forget Bob Layton! He is also in this.😊

Hey boss thanks for the spotlight. I was on the fence about getting this, but now I feel like I might have to bite the bullet. Your enthusiasm for this story really got me intrigued. Also, since the last printing was about a decade back it might be risky if I pass it on by.

I wasn't going to buy this, but I paused it and read the first issue, seems pretty fun and the dialogue isn't that cheesey either!

I just picked up my pre-order of this book yesterday and haven't opened the cellophane from it yet. I got the direct market cover. It was really fun to watch your overview of this omni, Omar. I had the comics and any of the cross- over comics originally when they were published. I am not sure if I still have those original issues. I had lost two boxes of my childhood comics in a basement flood. I had 7 boxes of my original comics from when I was a kid and the comics in two if the boxes got severely water damaged. I just sealed the two boxes shut so I could to go through them at some point in the future to catalog which of my comics were destroyed. So, I am not sure if the Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars comics were amongst the water damaged boxes of comics. In any case, I now have this great reprint omnibus of the Secret Wars to enjoy. Watching you go through the book reminded me of just how much this era of Marvel Comics was so fun to read. Watching you page through this omnibus, I have to say how much I have a renewed appreciation for Mike Zeck's art in this maxi-series. The paper stock just makes the art and colours so much more rich than the original comic book stock paper. That is why I love seeing all those older comics being put into book format. Thanks for the great overview, Omar.

Secret Wars #4 and Am. Spiderman #256 were my first comics, selected from the turning rack in a 7-11. I have been hopelessly addicted to comics ever since.
I have read it before but I don't own it so obvious buy for me, I love the story and art. I owned some of the action figured when I was young, wonder what happened to them lol. Thank you Marvel and Omar.
It would be interesting to compare the impact of Marvel's Secret Wars in 1984 against what seemed obviously DC's response of Crisis on Infinite Earths mini-series in 1985, another early crossover masterpiece. Great years for comics in my youth!
I normally don't buy Omnibus because of the size and price but the price point and relative low page count ( and of course getting a nice preview from Omar of what to expect inside) but I will be getting this one.
The fact that needs to remembered when reading DeFalco's introduction is that he was never a fan of Secret Wars in any way, shape, form or fashion. Hence that tone it was written in.
I got the previous printing about a month ago for only about $67 on Mercari. I'm so glad I don't need to get this one, lol. The spine logo is pretty cool, but I kinda prefer the size of the plain text.
Love this event! Was a huge reason I became a fan of Marvel.
Dont know if anyone here games too but if so please try Midnight Suns! Its based on rise of the midnight suns epic. It has so many cool easter eggs from all over marvel history. Im afraid it might bomb because its not a typical action game.

I’ve never actually read this storyline, only heard of it. So I guess this will be my 1st purchase of it.

if we use the Xmen from Xmen Apocalypse and the Fantastic Four from 2005 and the Eric Bana Hulk, then maybe we could fill in the shot at 8 min and 6 sec, the Marc Ruffalo Hulk doesn't look like that and the 2005 Fantastic Four got it right and so did the end of Xmen Apocalypse

I wonder couldn't they make the secret wars on the spine smaller!!! I mean older printing spine with bigger letters is far superior, I don't know why marvel is insisting on making these small fond lettering. When I look at my shelves I want the book to be able stand out with big lettering fond, but with this small fond spines they are all the same since I can't read what is written on spines. Looking at shelves and enjoying the view of the books is also an important part of this hobby. I mean we read the book once or twice but it stays forever in the shelf so Marvel needs to consider this annoying change they insist on for no reason at all
I agree. The new spines are complete garbage. Especially the Bronze Age ones.
I don’t mind the ones that’ve changed to the actual font from the title, though this one could perhaps be a bit spread out to increase the size & in the case of Wolverine the timing was just inconvenient to where vol 2 got reprinted very shortly after the first printing.
Ones like the silver age were just poor timing all around being in the middle of a reprint run for titles like Spidey, the design itself in isolation isn’t bad it just needs a larger font size to go along with the artwork requirement that prompted Marvel to do the redesign.
I remember reading my brothers Spiderman issue when he got they symbiote. Who would know it would have lead into us having venom

Twice i missed the stock of this one. As someone who has not read it and has no nostalgia for it, i’m not sure it’s worth getting. I’m inclined to get the paperback for half the price because it’s an important event even if not the best written one. But I really like the omni cover better than the alex ross paperback one. I’m so on the fence. Any recommendations?

Hey Omar do you know if DC is planning on releasing Alan Moores saga of the swamp thing in omnibus format? Ino they have the absolutes but I really want it in omnibus form.
Also regarding Marvel is there any chance they will reprint Byrnes she-hulk omnibus with maybe extra content, or do you think the chances of that are lower now thanks to the bad reception of the Disney plus show. Thanks in advance for any response.

The events of Secret Wars could not have taken place over a year. Sue Storm was pregnant when the events in this story took place and still pregnant when they all returned.
Everything is getting slimmer. The only things that are getting bigger are the price and my belly.

Seriously bothered by marvel’s choice of paper quality in recent years. If there’s any white on the page, it’s no longer white. It’s the reverse image on the other side of the page. Cheapos. No other way to say it. If it was an issue with the printer, either go to another printer or pay for thicker pages. But it’s an issue with cutting costs, and we get screwed. That being said, I need this book

The secret wars omni is the 2015 event by Jonathan Hickman.

The art on the hardcover reminds me of the shirts the late George Perez would wear. Gone too soon... sigh.
This story has lost little of its original appeal, but Marvel hurried its production disastrously by appointing the inker Bob Layton to supplement the art of the esteemed team of Mike Zeck and John Beatty. Layton's art is not only manifestly different in style to theirs but quite inferior also. If Marvel truly wished to market an edition which justified this format it would have Zeck and Beatty redo the Layton issues. Parts of the story are underplotted: Skeeter McPherran and Marsha Rosenberg were presumably members of the Denver suburb which the Beyonder transplanted to Battleworld, although this remains unclear.

Huh?? Why are you saying that Tony Stark was Iron Man in the Secret Wars?? During the stories once they are fixing his armor and we can see that he is black... so it's Rhodes...

I was really dissapointed from Secret Wars. The story was not that much intresting, it has too much text and the art is quite average on most of the time.
I love Zeck's Kraven's Last Hunt but here he was not at his best on most of the pages.
