Cp has just as great a handle, a better mid range, better 3pt shot, got to the rim a fair amount in his younger years before the meniscus tear. slightly better passer if not equal, and I’d say theyre about equal defensively. To me I’d say I’d take zekes game over cps as a first option but cp is the better overall talent. Young cp before his meniscus tear was damn near Zeke 2.0. After 2010 cp played more like Stockton. Production wise they are pretty much a wash. Both give u about the same numbers all around and both have very similar skill sets on paper. It’s just that Cps main gift is to pass and zekes is to score. But both can do the other just as well if need be. And idk what this durability thing is cause Zeke definitely had his fair share of bad luck with injuries as well. NBA didn't add a 3rd team All-NBA until 1988-89 which was Zeke 8th season. He made All-NBA for five straight seasons from his 2nd season until his 6th season. Magic and Sydney Moncrief had 2 of the 4 guard spots on lock so he was battling George Gervin, Gus Williams, and Jim Paxson for the last 2 spots before MJ showed up and took a stranglehold on the 3rd guard spot. Stockton only made 1 All-NBA team before they added the 3rd team in 1988-89.

@@sethmcclain5007 while there are occasional exceptions, all-NBA players are generally recognized as all-stars by fans. I was using his all-star appearance record as a proxy to show how well he played early in his career.
Since that didn't work, here are some stats. Stockton didn't have a season with more than 10 ppg before 1987-88. (incidentally, he also made the all-NBA second team that year... over Isiah Thomas. So yes, all-NBA players can be overlooked in the all-star selection process... but in this case that just supports Stockton's case.)
And let's not act like Stockton was raking in the 3rd-team all-NBA selections. He had 8 1st- or 2nd-team all-NBA selections... 3 more than Isiah did.
OP is acting like Thomas's all-NBA selections are worth more because he didn't have the option to make a 3rd-team, and that when Stockton and Thomas were both playing, Thomas got the nod over Stockton when both were in their primes. But that's blatantly revisionist. Stockton hit his prime a bit later than some other guys, and the first season he was in his prime, he was considered better than Thomas.
Maybe you can make a case for Thomas based on his 2 rings, but let's not make arguments that don't take context into account because we want to push narratives. Stockton had a brilliant and incredibly underrated career.
Players under 6'5" almost never win you championships as the clear main guy. Steph Curry is an obvious exception here, which makes his run so incredible. The 3-point revolution plays a big part here, but he's obviously far more than just a good 3-point shooter. But if you look back, you see Jokic, Giannis, Kawhi, Durant*, LeBron, Kobe, Duncan, Shaq, D-Wade!, Dirk, Boston's big 3, the blue-collar Pistons (with no clear main guy statistically), Jordan/Pippen, Olajuwon, Magic, Bird, Kareem, the Bad Boy Pistons (again, with no clear main guy statistically), Moses Malone/Dr. J... you have to go all the way back to the 1978-79 Seattle Supersonics led by Gus Williams (I had no idea who this was) to find a championship team clearly led by a guy under 6'5".
when your game revolves around giving other people the ball, it's really really hard to will your team to a win. All you can do is try to pass a little bit better so your teammate is a little bit more open. Even if you're a score-first guy, I suspect it's just way easier to double a 6'3" 180 lb guy than it is to stop a 6'7" 230 lb guy. In the end, it's out of your hands whether they make or miss the shot. Using championships to evaluate PGs under 6'5" just feels like a flawed measure.
My suspicion is that a superstar PG + an above-average forward = an above-average PG + a superstar forward, but it's harder to find the first combo because truly great PGs are harder to find.

Gil was making good points tbh. There's no way I lead the league in assists/steals and you try to say someone is a better point guard than me because of two chips. The disparity between 15k and 9k should speak for itself. It's also crazy to say stats don't matter when we literally use them to measure a player's consistent impact on the floor. The eye test also matters equally but can never replace stats. That being said no way Zeke is overrated lol I can't cosign that one.

right? I hate this whole "the stats don't matter" thing because the stats don't matter until you make a good point about somebody favorite player n then they RUN TO THE STATS to prove a point. The narrative is never consistent n stats only don't matter when its convenient for argument purposes. It's the FUCKING nba. it's NOT HARD to pass the eye test dog, you're literally talking the 450 best players in the world, out of multi-millions that play n I think it's the most INACCURATE WAY to tell how good someone else, because the "eye" test is exactly how we end up with busts LOL. .

~ I am not suggesting that you and others aren’t critical thinkers.
Stats matter to an extent, if you ever read the book how to lie with statistics ~ it would bring a clearer understanding of what I am stating.
The determining factor should be how the stats led to winning. Winning IS THE ULTIMATE determinant in measuring success and greatness. Basketball is a team sport. Stats measure the tangibles, the eye test measures the intangibles.
Isiah Thomas is the first, “small” player to be the best player on the team leading the team to championships.
Prior to the Bad Boy era ~ Isiah was a top flight scorer and assist guy ~ compiling stats~ but not winning.
Listening to Gil’s awful takes is one thing, but reading the comments and seeing the disconnect and lack of critical thinking is what bothers me.
If you took the best GM’s of all time: and you had Isiah Thomas, John Stockton, and Chris Paul as the top three choices, I’m sure that Zeke would always be the first guy drafted to lead their team.
Gil disrespects the older generations, much like many of the younger generations who use only use “stats” and highlights as the measure of who better.
The same debate with “skill” and “athleticism “”
~ so many assume that modern players are so far advanced because of “how it looks” in the highlights ~ I discount much of what Gil says when he talks of players that played in previous eras. Especially since he didn’t win anything and he’s a known talent that never won anything ~ more worried about his stats and highlights than winning.
At one point in time, the PG was equal to NFL quarterback in terms of teams winning and losing. They were given the same reference ~
Today it is all about stats. Like saying Drew Brees was a better quarterback than Tom Brady (before Tom played another 5 years and added more stats) ~
Without context, simply saying Isiah didn’t have the stats is a foolish argument, not understanding he sacrificed his offense so that others could score , and it was necessary for team success ~ which was the “JOB” of the PG.
I hate the debate, not because stats don’t matter, it is because the stats are used to frame a narrative, but without context it is just stats. Chris Childs once made an all-star game averaging over 20ppg. While playing for the then New Jersey Nets, I can remember his peers and former players all stating he wasn’t an all star and put up “stats” in a terrible team.
So I ask is Carmelo Anthony a top ten player of all time since he is in the top 10 in all time scoring? Because state matter?
Is Dirk better than Wilt, Shaq, Elvin Hayes because he scored more points?
That’s my debate on stats. You can use them to an extent, but they can not be the sole determinant of who is better.
Gil doesn’t make good points. Only to those that lack critical thinking.
FTR, I watched many of Gil’s games live, he had the Wizards rolling, it was great to see. The most exciting player in Washington Basketball history.
Highest career PPG average ~ yet he won’t rank in the top 5 of the franchise he had the most success with.
Gil talks a bunch of BS ! lol.

@@relevancy1123~ is Carmelo Anthony top 10 all time?
He’s too 10 in scoring. He has the stats.
Is Dirk better than Wilt, Shaq, Hakeem, Moses Malone?
      He scored more points?
Stats can be used to an extent. But they can and are most used to frame a narrative.
Basketball is a team game, how much a player wins is the ultimate measure determining success.
Oscar Robertson first, and Russell Westbrook after, are prominent cases of “stats” not being able to measure how good a player is ~ but winning while being a he leader ~ point guards are the defacto leaders of the team. “Why do you think so many ex point guards become the best coaches??!?!?!?!
Again, stats matter to an extent. But is isn’t the qualifier for greatness.

@@mobrown1198 there are stats beyond just scoring, though. Percentages from different sides of the floor, shot charts, true shooting, effective field goal, +/- stats… theres more than just “regular fg%, assists, rebounds, fouls, points.” so of course I’m not just basing it off of those NOR am I saying stats can tell the whole story, either. But when people start COMPLETELY DISCOUNTING THEM, ONLY WHEN ITS CONVENIENT FOR THEIR FAVORITE PLAYER, thats when I think the argument gets convoluted.

@@relevancy1123I mean if you go look up the stats the only thing stat wise in a season that John Stockton has more of then assist and steals and in steals Stockton is only beating him by .3 so let’s not pretend that if you bring stats into it that Stockton is better.

Love no Chill. I think he comes with the most logical takes the past year. I was born in 90. I definitely was not able to see Zeeke in live action. I just thought he was the dude who Mj didn’t like. Then I began to see all the players I admire show their admiration for Zeeke not MJ. It made me go look him up. What I saw can’t be unseen 😂 he was straight gas!!!!!
