I had the pleasure to meet Mr. Lukather at a casino in Ontario Canada called Casino Rama. We ran into him and Mike Porcaro in the bar a few hours after the show ended. The Luke that you are seeing in this video is the Luke you meet in person. They gave us about 15 minutes of their time. Luke is the most genuine guy. I told him that I felt that he belonged up on a pedestal, to which he immediately corrected me telling me that he is just a great guitar player that was extremely fortunate to reach the heights that he has, doing the thing that he loves most. He talked with me, just like he spoke to the people in this video, like he knew me for years. As we finished talking, he offered my wife a hug, and I took one as well. This man is an exceptionally nice human being! I really enjoyed this video and will be looking for more to watch. Thanks Sunset Sound!

All these laughs and stories….I always wanted to be a session player thanks to the Toto guys. That goes back 40 years. Now I finally can record at home and thanks to Luke and the boys, I’m still trying to nail it in one take and burn it straight through down to the hard drive. Here’s to another 60 years of recordings in this legendary place. May you live forever.
I've been a fan of Luke's since the first Toto album. I've read, listened and watched countless interviews with him. This was one of the better interviews he's done, and it was nice having Niko there as well because you could feel the connection they both had. I've bought all of Toto's and his solo albums, and many albums he's played on. I've seen him play live with Toto and with Larry Carlton. I've met him three times. Once in '85 during the Isolation Tour after the show when he walked out the backstage door with his arm around Jeffrey as he had just finished telling him a joke and Jeff's laugh was so infectious. I again met those two in '88 before a show at the Gorge in Washington State talking to and taking pictures with them. And then in '01 at an after show in Phoenix meeting all the band members and getting a birthday bear hug from Luke. And in all the times I was fortunate to get to inter-act with Luke, he was personal, humble, funny, gracious and just a great guy. He made you feel like you were a friend. And believe me, the guy doesn't get enough credit with the general public on just how much he contributed to music in the 70', 80', and 90's. So glad to hear that Sony is doing a documentary on him. I just hope they let him be him and dig deep to show exactly what a big influence he was in our life's enjoyment of music.
Lukather is the studio guitar legend. Amazing how good his memory is after so many years. Fascinating to hear the behind the scenes stories of the music from my youth.. 👏🏼
I agree about his memory, I was thinking the same thing except when he mentioned Ted Templeman was a producer during Sammy era VH session that he sat in on, but I near perfect. I've never seen someone with such a great memory recollection in this type context
I grew up in Sherman Oaks and used to listen to Toto practice in the Porcaro garage on Valleyheart Drive. Grant High was a great place to go to school in the late 1970's. Laurel Canyon was magic. Clubs on Sunset were ALIVE. Lonn Friend was a neighbor when he did AR. New Albums EVERY DAY. and Bruce Botnick is my Cousin by way of his mother, Nemoy, who lived in N Hollywood behind my grandparents on Carpenter if I remember correctly. She used to give me the tickets to the Grammy's and after parties he'd give her. Have had many Luke encounters. You could also see just about everyone at Tony's Liquor Store. Joe Walsh also lived hu the street. All the TV kids went to Cal Prep High on Ventura. Remember teasing Michael Jackson who just wanted to play basketball with the other kids, and we teased him. Almost everyone was a member of the Mulholland Tennis Club.
I'm at best a mild Toto fan (great band, don't get me wrong, just haven't dived in) but watch every Lukather interview that comes across my way. What a cool, talented, humble, funny dude. Legend.
I wasn't a Toto fan at all because all I had ever heard was the pop, top 40 style stuff they put on the radio- their singles. And I like them but, they're not really my taste- then I finally listened to their discography- man these guys have some seriously heavy shit. In fact, the stuff on the radio isn't really a good representation of what they do- they're much heavier with a serious jazz influence, it's really good. You should check them out man, you will be surprised, I think.
What an absolute treasure this video is! Lukather is legend, and was at the top of his game in the golden age of making records. I love hearing stories about how the records were made, and how these guys poured their heart and souls into making albums. Most of the general public has no idea that Luke and the boys from ToTo have played on most of the songs they love! I used to sit on my floor and read liner notes in cd sleeves every time I would listen to a new album. I can't count how many times I saw Lukather and the Porcaro's as the musicians. This is an amazing interview that was done right, I have listened to it three times already. I can never get tired of hearing Luke talk! :)
Luke is one of the kindest, most generous musicians I will ever meet. A constant source of inspiration for me. What a brilliant, hilarious cat. Thank you for this.
As I always tell you guys, I love all of these interviews you do. Lukather is one of those with once in a lifetime, Musicians. Master of his instrument and an incredible songwriter. I could listen to him talk nonstop forever. All of this stuff he has seen and heard and been a part of it is just amazing. I don’t think 80% of Toto fans know how talented everyone of those guys in that band are. A definite inspiration for generations of songwriters and musicians. You guys always out do you yourselves and I appreciate it so much. What I wouldn’t have done to have been born even five years earlier to be able to have been there and done with many of these incredible people did. These interviews, and the information in them is absolutely pertinent to the future of music. We are losing so many of these great musicians to time, that will never be able to share their experience and inspiration. So when you have somebody like Steve on here… I love it. Because future generations will be able to look back and be able to draw education and inspiration from the videos. I would love to see you get people in your studio, who may have not even recorded in it… But were great songwriters and musicians. People like Dennis DeYoung. Who have written so many incredible songs that deserve to be documented. Thank you again for bringing these videos to fans and musicians like me, around the world. As somebody who still writes their own music and a lot of what I write has that 70s and 80s feel. Because that’s what I love to listen to and I’m finding more and more that there is a huge fan base of all ages who enjoy listening to that kind of sound also. I think because of the love for the music of those times, whether it be the parents or the grandparents playing it for their kids and grandkids, it ends up making everybody love it. Which gives an inside look to new and upcoming musicians to hopefully not lose that inspiration, and use it to create new, incredible music that is more of them, instead of a drum machine and a couple chords. Because of you guys, this inspiration lives on, and gives many budding musicians an incredible look into the creation of some of the biggest and best songs in the history of music. The inspiration behind them, and the technicalities of how they were recorded. To allow new engineers a look into the incredible ways that this music was recorded and mastered to perfection. Outside of the digital age, which gives music from this period of time such a warm, incredible, feel and sound. So thank you again. Keep these great videos coming.
I saw TOTO hear in the Philippines somewhere in the 90's maybe 93 or 94. Anyway, my friend and I chose to watch the 2nd night coz I told him that TOTO will surely play much longer which they did and they played most of the song that I wasn't expecting they would and wow, was it a blast. You can even ask Steve Lukather, I don't if still remember, that they have played their last song, had bowed to the audience but all of us in that theater were shouting Lea because it's one of their popular songs here and they haven't played it. And this happened, I think it was Steve who first came back on stage and everyone screamed in joy and he started saying,.... "we're sorry because we haven't prepared for this particular song". But being pros that they are, they went on playing it anyway partly acoustically. Man, I wouldn't forget that experience, I'm hugr fan of TOTO. Thanks for this video.
I love Luke so much he's always been and still is so kind to me. He is so special as a person and an artist which is very rare when you ad in the success he's had. I'm only chiming in here to let you guys know he is this person you see here.
I've watched several of these interviews, and I've seen several with Lukather, but this may be the best interview I've ever watched period. I laughed out loud several times to the point that my neighbors may be worried about my sanity. Great stuff, guys!
I love Luke. Met him after a show in 07 at Casino Rama. He graciously took 5-10 minutes to speak with my friend and I and our wives. Amazingly there was no one else there but Greg Goddo who was just leaving as we approached. He was gracious, humble and a real gentleman. He thanked us for coming to the show and the picture we took with him is one of my treasured possessions. Lee Sklar, who Luke talks about in the BB gun story was the bass player on that tour as Mike Porcaro had just been diagnosed with ALS and stopped touring. Like Luke, we saw him taking the time to chat with some fans in the lobby as we were walking through.
Steve Lukather, I know the music and his face 40 years ago as I sang “Rosanna Rosanna” with my 2 year old son but pre-google no opportunities to see their names of the great band Toto. With a baby to feed couldn’t buy the album.
@@brianoconnor7796 this member Luthaker. In the 70’s and 80’s with hundreds of new bands plus raising 4 children and 12 hour work days I had time driving my car to listen to music. No extra time to learn Bands members names.
I never thought 'Africa' was corny or silly. The track and melody are KILLER and the lyrics...... after the section here where Luke talks about the song, I googled the lyrics and listened to the instrumental track. I then searched for the meaning of the lyrics. One of the results contained a user comment from Cindy Baetz on April 30, 2022 at 9:58 pm. What Cindy said, I think is PERFECT. "This is one of my favorite songs of all time. I’ve never thought of it as silly. This is truly an exotic, existential song of longing and loving. I’ve always thought of the continent of Africa as fascinating and beautiful. This love song to her unique beauty is a perfect expression of respect for the miracle that is Africa."
I've loved "Africa" from the first day I heard it, about a week after "Toto IV" dropped. It's hypnotic, reminds me a lot of "Bottom Of Your Soul" written much later. That rhythm gets into your blood -- it becomes a part of you, once you've heard it. Absolutely love it! ❤
This was fantastic. I just seen him with Ringo Starr in Atlantic City back in October. Awesome show , it was like seeing 5 legendary bands for the price of one.
This is absolute fucking gold!! I'm on my third listen of Luke's audiobook and I'm still hearing things that are nuggets of wisdom that will resonate with me for whatever's left of my musical life. Thanks for everything Steve.
@@DrLangly Yes, Steve narrates it and it's fantastic. You get all the humor and inflection, not to mention there's a few things he says that aren't in the printed book.
Gawd I could listen to Luke & his stories every day. Hilarious ! Absolutely luved that cats playing from day one & still do. What awesome times they must have had. One of the best interviews I've ever watched.
Luke is an icon, played on countless classics, incredible guitarist & musician. One of my all time favorites. But if this man did stand up comedy, I'd buy a ticket in a heartbeat!!
This is easily one of the best and most informative interviews about 'the business' I have heard. I remember buying Luke's guitar instruction video from 100 years ago, and since we are the same age, and both had a home base in L.A. the adventures in Guitar Center on Sunset bring back many awesome memories. We easily grew up in the best time imaginable, had more fun than probably any other generation, listened and recorded the best music ever made, and watching this video brought back many powerful and intimate memories. Many thanks you for sharing this interview, and giving others my age an opportunity to re-live our incredible childhood and early adult years!

This is laugh out loud awesome. Thanks for recording and posting it, and thanks for not censoring it. I could listen to hours of Luke and Nico swapping stories.
This series on SunSet Sound is magical. Luke's humour gets better by the day. I had the honour to see Toto live an handful of times. I will never forget the first time me and my mates went to see them in Rome (Tenda a Strisce 1988). The venue's sound was historically terrible being a circus tent but their sound was pristine ...like CD quality. Speculations had it that they had played mostly pre recorded music.. Their stage apperance did not help either as the was nothing on stage. Two set of keys (double or three tiers) one left and one right, not a single cable dangling anywhere, don't think they had wedges either. These guys were ahead of their time for sure. A year later I came across an article about the technicality behind that tour and learned that all the sounds sets samplers, drum triggers, modules, guitar pedals etc, were set "Per track" by their techs backstage Front of the house used a Digital Consolle I believe Yamaha PM1d being the first digital live mixing desk released just a year prior to that tour. So yes, we were listening to Digital CD like quality music, played by the best players of their time.
Thank you so much for a great window into what it was like at SSS. Lueky and you Engineers taught me so much through the years and I humbly appreciate it. Im 55 yrs old.
Hi guys, I have to say this is the best interview I've ever seen, absolute GOLD, thanks for keeping it real and not deleting the juicy stuff, awesome........
My favourite guitar player! Good too see him looking so well. In the Beato video he looked very old and out of it… had me worried his time would come soon. Candyman is still my all time favourite album by Luke!
Yes i noticed how downbeat he was in the Rick Beato video, he said during it that he was frustrated with not being able to make plans, having to do interviews on zoom etc, he was unhappy and it showed, not his usual self, but it was still a great discussion, he's totally back to his best here though, and i love that for him 🤩
Fantastic. Steve is one of a kind, and so warm and generous and hilarious. This really shows that talent is only a small part of what is required to make a mark in music. There's so much more and Luke only gives us a glimpse, but its enough. The magic that happened in Sunset Sound (and elsewhere) came from people like Steve and Jeff Porcaro and others (in all roles) who have so much love for life, so much passion that it just can't be contained. Some of it was captured on tape, so we fans can continue to enjoy it. It's great to see Luke and many others still out there keeping the spirit alive.
Absolute genius. Could sit and listen to this all day. Luke is a legend and such a genius guitar player. Met him once and such a lovely guy. Friendly, humble and down to earth.
I love both the songs Lukather wrote for the tubes. Talk to ya Later has a kick ass guitar solo in it.❤❤❤ I love how this interview ends with a fade out.😂
This is one of the coolest interviews I’ve ever seen. Lukather there is the man. His humor is on point. Not to mention he’s still one of the best players around.
It's absolutely incredible how much Steve remembers. I could listen to him talk and tell stories for hours. Would've loved to hear more details of sessions he was in and more Prince stories, good, bad and ugly. LOL
I’m sure in heaven Steve Lukather well entertain us all with all his stories and his amazing sense of humor he has the most funniest sense of humor. I know from a man from a musician, and he has a very beautiful heart. I know someday we will all be together with him in heaven.
I can't get enuff of this man and his stories ! I can listen to his stories all day long. I wish I was there in that times ,we ( we are the same age) were young ! He stays young all his life. He love him to death ❤️
Luke is a GUITAR GOD. Nothing the man can't play and then with the most exquisite taste. Now, most of these great stories are showcased in his book 'The gospel according to Luke". Just wish Rake (J Graydon) was on this too. It would have been even more hilarious. Just had a blast though watching this. A 1000000 thanks for this
I love luke.....his storytelling is amazing and freaking funny 😆. So much knowledge and experience in the studio. Love hearing how songs came about. Rest In Peace Al Schmitt......he was mentioned often here

Just finished "The Gospel According to Luke". Great to hear references made during this interview that are talked about in the book. Great stuff really.

Steve Lukather is a tonic, so funny, l’m crying with laughter and a great guitar player too.
New Albums EVERY DAY.
and
Bruce Botnick is my Cousin by way of his mother, Nemoy, who lived in N Hollywood behind my grandparents on Carpenter if I remember correctly.
I've watched three times I enjoy hearing the stories but I love watching Niko laugh at Steve's stories
Could listen to Luke all day long. What a life he’s lead.
Luke's an all-time classic hang. Love this.

This is not only the BEST Steve Lukather interview but also a great music history lesson!
I've never heard Luke so sharp and on point. Great stuff.
Keeping a straight face around Steve Lukather at any given time has has got to be next to impossible. Great roundtable.
I’ve watched most if not all Lukather interviews of the last several years…this is by far the funniest! Great stories!
I am a huge fan of Lukes but i am also a huge fan of yours.....I hope you are doing well Mr. Malloy
@@johnwalls1614 Thanks John. I have a new rock Cd finished coming soon. Luke will get it first as usual. ha ha..
**WE WILL LOOK BACK AT THIS INTERVIEW*** *THE PEOPLE HERE ARE EPIC* *CATER*
I've watched several of these interviews, and I've seen several with Lukather, but this may be the best interview I've ever watched period. I laughed out loud several times to the point that my neighbors may be worried about my sanity.
Great stuff, guys!
Hell yeah!!
He was a good friend to ED down the years. 👍👍
I grew up listening to Toto, I never heard his name, ever. 🤔
@@pompom11 whose name had you not heard before?
Have you ever heard the back story on how Africa the song was written and presented to the band? Quiet amusing.
@@janetstreet7264 totally agree
This was fantastic. I just seen him with Ringo Starr in Atlantic City back in October. Awesome show , it was like seeing 5 legendary bands for the price of one.
Steve Lukather is an INTERNATIONAL TREASURE (for us outside the US). Legendary musician and storyteller. 👑
Steve is the epitome of humility..... with all that he has accomplished, I rarely hear him bring up his bronze medals from the Special Olympics.
A brilliant round table session. Lukather is as engaging as he is talented and full of whimsy. Best 95 minutes of entertainment in quite a while.
Niko is an absolute genius.
This is absolute fucking gold!! I'm on my third listen of Luke's audiobook and I'm still hearing things that are nuggets of wisdom that will resonate with me for whatever's left of my musical life. Thanks for everything Steve.
Does Steve read it? I’m almost done reading the book!
Nice with all the accolades. Awards. Albums. They all are down to earth. Humble. Rare. Well worth the time. And the laughs. Great stuff
Love Luke.
Flying to L.A. to see him at The Baked Potato next week.
Luke is an icon, played on countless classics, incredible guitarist & musician. One of my all time favorites. But if this man did stand up comedy, I'd buy a ticket in a heartbeat!!
Hey Luke, if the guitar thing doesn’t work out. You have a great career in comedy. You are funnier than most comedians out there.
Awe!! Hell yeah!!! DM Sunset Sound on IG. We will send ya a shirt

This is laugh out loud awesome. Thanks for recording and posting it, and thanks for not censoring it. I could listen to hours of Luke and Nico swapping stories.
These memories being recorded warms my heart. Legends of the industry. So much history that must be remembered. I love listening to Luke's stories.
One of THE best roundtables EVER! Thank you for bringing Steve onto this show.
THE funniest ....lol
Check out Namm was great too, with Leland and crew.
Hi guys, I have to say this is the best interview I've ever seen, absolute GOLD, thanks for keeping it real and not deleting the juicy stuff, awesome........
I cannot thank you enough for posting this. Truly one of the best you've done so far. Both Luke and Niko !! What Gems.
You should get Leland Sklar and Steve together on a show!
My favourite guitar player! Good too see him looking so well. In the Beato video he looked very old and out of it… had me worried his time would come soon.
Candyman is still my all time favourite album by Luke!
Yes i noticed how downbeat he was in the Rick Beato video, he said during it that he was frustrated with not being able to make plans, having to do interviews on zoom etc, he was unhappy and it showed, not his usual self, but it was still a great discussion, he's totally back to his best here though, and i love that for him 🤩
Oh my word❤️. insane roundtable. Steve is an underrated genius a dying breed
How can you not like this guy?
He’s also monster guitar player, singer, etc…..
Steve has a remarkable memory. A true interest in people. Is great musician and a great documentor. Thanks
🎵As soon as my heart stops breakin'🎵
🎵Anticipating🎵
🎵As soon as forever is through🎵
🎵I'll be over you🎵
Absolute genius. Could sit and listen to this all day. Luke is a legend and such a genius guitar player. Met him once and such a lovely guy. Friendly, humble and down to earth.
I love both the songs Lukather wrote for the tubes. Talk to ya Later has a kick ass guitar solo in it.❤❤❤ I love how this interview ends with a fade out.😂
This is absolute GOLD! My God, Luke seems like such a great, great guy.
LOL
yeah, nothing like seen a bitter and jealous washed artist trashing a legend.
I’m sure in heaven Steve Lukather well entertain us all with all his stories and his amazing sense of humor he has the most funniest sense of humor. I know from a man from a musician, and he has a very beautiful heart. I know someday we will all be together with him in heaven.
Priceless. Man... what a gem. I wanna grab a beer with those guys and just listen forever to those stories.
A 1000000 thanks for this
Drew!!! This is gonna be great. Thanks for doing this
Love him!
legend for doing this
SERIOUSLY LOVE HIM FOR DOING THESE
He does a great job with these, Bravo Drew my friend
Simply the very best Steve interview out there! Thankyou for making this!
LUKE in his element! absolute blast and laughter! there should be a part 2 of his book!
My favorite band of all time. I love love love Steve!
Lukather is fascinating!
I love luke.....his storytelling is amazing and freaking funny 😆.
So much knowledge and experience in the studio.
Love hearing how songs came about.
Rest In Peace Al Schmitt......he was mentioned often here
Ya gotta love Steve!!! Truly one of the funniest people in the business. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting him a number of times over the years. Always gracious. Never fails to leave you in stitches
I am a HUGE LEE SKLAR FAN and he can not COMPLIMENT Steve Lukather(LUKE), Niko Bolas(Niko), and Jeff Porcaro more!!!!!! LEE NEVER STOPS MENTIONING his love for these three fellas and literally calls them Brothers!!!!!! Misses Jeff so much!!!!!! Luke like LEE has so many GREAT stories!!!!!! Niko too!!!!!
Leland is so cool. Played with everyone and stayed down to earth.
@@jasonwilliams6005 The best!
Just finished "The Gospel According to Luke". Great to hear references made during this interview that are talked about in the book. Great stuff really.
My favorite guitarist by far. Such a great player and funny guy. Could listen to this all day. Have him back, we need more Luke!
I don’t have words to describe how AWESOME that interview was!
Steve Luke is my favorite artist of all time and he is hilarious but let people talk my friend. People could barley get a sentence out with out him interrupting. But he is such a nice guy and always is entertaining. Great interview!
Love Luke. I hope this guy lives forever!
I really like this guy. I cant wait to hear this.
Looking forward to parts 2, 3, and 4 of this interview 😂 (I’m not kidding, get Luke back in for more of this!)
