I gotta say, I have been watching so many camera bag video trying to find the right one and I'm sick in the head watching them, but yours was so refreshing. You also did what 70% of the reviewers failed to do. Actually show what can fit inside. Thanks so much.
It's a great bag. Shimoda crushed it. Compliments my 2 other Shimoda bags really well. Favorite feature - the capture clip strap design. Freakin awesome! Also, great video bud.
Thinking about getting the 25L. My only camera bag currently is the Prvke Lite and I love it but I need something for longer trips or when I need to take more of my gear. I love that the Prvke Lite fits under the front seat on a flight.
Thank you for the video. I’ve have actually already taken delivery of my Shimoda Urban Explorer 25L in black that I bought during the Kickstarter campaign. I have two other Explorer V2 bags at 30L and 35L and an older Explorer V1 version as well. Obviously love their bags and have a different kit inside each one. The new Urban version is perfect for my lighter travel kit. Really recommend these bags. Happy to answer any questions. Take care.
Ian returned to his roots at F-stop having the large top pocket (Tilopa) and the internal frame. But this time the camera cube has the frame. I have an X30 Shimoda. I like everything about it but the material. It is noisy when hiking. It gets distracting when hiking and filming. If I traveled more this Urban Explore bag would be a consideration. My Mindshift Daylight 18L continues to be my most used bag.
I have the Explore V2 30L and the under the seat option is one of the bigger reasons I got it along with the guaranteed european carry on size for when I travel outside the country. I love it even though I've only had it for a few weeks now. Shimoda really makes some fantastic bags!
I did about 200 flights to 60+ countries between 2017-2019. Did have a plastic belt at one point, but they usually make you take them off anyway. Thanks for the vid, like the bag.
One thing I love about my lowepro backpack is the small felt lined pocket on the top front which protects anything you don’t want scratched like sunglasses etc.
Picked up the 25L two weeks ago and used it just this past week for a shoot. It's a great bag with a lot features that fit what I'm looking for and my needs. Having two laptop sleeves was a bonus. While I don't have that much gear to pack, I am considering returning it and getting the 30L instead. In several weeks I'll be flying out to a shoot for the first time (and it's international!) and just don't think I could pack what I need in the 25L. From your video showing the 30L and how it was packed, it definitely looks like the 30L is the way to go.
Is it possible to fit a large cube in the 30l urban explore ? And also , can the medium cube fit mavic 3 , pro controller , A7iv 24-105 and 100-400 g master ???
Awesome review David! I’ve watched a ton of videos on this and had been wavering on which size to get but this convinced me that 30L was the size for me. Thanks!
Man, the amount of people that have said that about their Shimoda bags really says something about their products. They're so good, their customers become passionate about their work. Love that man!
In my 20L urban explorer, the laptop doesn’t go in the place mentioned in the video. It slides into yet another compartment accessed from the top compartment
They both have that slot for the laptop also. On the 20L, the backdoor slot is a bit smaller and you can only use the top slot and on the 30L you can use either option
I'm thinking of backing either the 25 or the 30 and I'm wondering how exact are the dimensions of the core unit? My d7200 and 80-400g measures at just under 11", larger than the 10.6 in internal height of the 25L core unit. Would it fit with some coaxing? I would really like to use the smallest bag I can get away with that'll hold the camera with that lens attached and 1-2 others.
Hey, thank for this interesting video. I have a question. My 25L PM Nomatic is a little bit too small so I am considering support for this 30L. I want to fit my two cameras with their lenses. They make 33cm long, a bit more maybe 33,5 or 34… the core unit is 33cm long… can you tell if the core unit can support a little more than the 33cm by distord or the frame will be too hard for that king of twist ?
For the Key clip..I would rig a Peak design anchor link..and you can put the anchor circular connector/loop(the loop you put on your camera) on your keychain?..lol
Hi David! Great review. I have a question though, can the 25 or 30L fit a thick laptop in an EVA case on the back or front laptop compartment? Mine is an ASUS TUF 15.6 gaming laptop at 3cm Thickness that I put in an EVA case for additional protection with 4.5cm thickness when the laptop is inside. I'm just curious because most of my camera bags will fit my laptop but with the Hardshell EVA case then it wont fit anymore. I'm a casual gamer and have mirrorless camera gears and a small drone when I travel. Laptop EVA case with Laptop inside Dimensions are: Length 28cm x Thickness 4.5cm x Height 49cm. Hope you can answer. Thank you!
I'm not sure I'll get any of the other sizes, but go check out Brandon Talbot's video on it. He got the 20L and was stoked > ruclips.net/video/wcfsphmzHjY/видео.htmlsi=4zXJbGynW6tOpTEW
Hi mate,I have a peak design 30l v1 bag where I pack fully up to 6-8kg daily usage. I found out the shoulder strap to quite hard, painful for long day wearing the bag and no cushion like this new shimoda bag had. I did have shoulder pain after days wear the PD bag. Just to check and appreciate if you could share some opinions: 1)Does this bag feel better in term shoulder cushion, weight distribution etc? Would consider to get this to replace my PD 30L everyday backpack. 2)does the top pocket able to fit a peak design tech pouch(if you had 1)😂(feel like you would😅) Nice video btw man. ❤

Awesome bag..but kinda nit picking on one thing..the "side pockets for tripods/water bottle"..one side has extra "sleeve/pockets" at the 10:16 mark ..that is nice!.but the other side at the 9:44 mark ..pause the video..(where David is touching and holding with his fingers)..that inner part....they could have attached an inner pocket as well..on the same inner sleeve strap part where it swings away.. obviously not on the side where the side access door goes.. maybe just a pocket? without the "pen holder tabs"......seemed like a missed opportunity...in my opinion you can never have enough "pockets" for things..lol..like the saying goes..its better to have and not need..then need and not have...lol just my opinion..haha

The internal frame feels like magic on this thing! I mean, outdoors backpacks have known for years that if you're carrying load, then an internal frame is incredibly useful, but camera backpacks have never seemed to grasp that idea
That inner sleeve is meant for a tablet. Not a laptop. You skipped over the laptop pocket which is in the top organizer pocket. There is a flap with a computer icon on it. Lift that flap up and you have access to the laptop top pocket. The flap keeps it hidden.
Great review, super in depth as always, but the biggest con to the bag had nothing to with the bag itself but in the price point. $280 - $340 for a very minimal bag seems a bit excessive. The Action X V2 and the Explore V2 are far more feature rich (and robust in build quality) but some of the smaller sizes in those collections are coming in around the same price point as all versions of the Urban Explore bag. Just to state it the bag is phenomenal but in terms I think the price point should be a bit lower. While I love Shimoda bags and honestly use nothing but their bags it's hard to justify paying more for less.
It's a no-go for me. I don't particularly appreciate how the laptop is accessed. You must open the other compartment or the top to get to it. I travel quite often with my laptop for work and it’s a hassle to get to the laptop if there already items in the top pocket. I need a laptop where I can access the laptop without having to open other parts of the bag.

This is a near perfect bag for most people. The empty space on the front of the bag could've been utilized better by adding elastic cords, loop attachment points, or something on the front of the bag for exterior storage/carrying options.
These bags aren’t meant for that…go get the explore bags or action x bags…..these are built for city breaks or weekends away not hiking of the beaten track….how much gear do people need to carry….🙈🙈

You mention about Peak Design Capture Clip STRAP - but what's about ulanzi - will be good for that backback?
The Falcam backpack strap fits it perfectly👍

In most planes I've been on it fits under the seat, but smaller puddle jumpers it has to go in the overhead bin
