  • China is home to 100 million hectares of wasteland - that's an area the size of Egypt - where crops cannot grow due to high soil salinity or alkalinity. For decades, the Chinese government and scientists have made great efforts to improve soil quality, and now, hope is on the horizon. A hybrid crop called "saltwater rice" is able to grow and yield in various saline-alkali soils, including tundra and dessert.

    My mother told me on the phone from China about this Rice 2 years ago. She was very happy that this kind of rice can grow in the salted fields, and it has been very successful at her hometown. Because her hometown has lots of salted soil, she often told me this soil can not grow anything but weed when I was little. Now this new rice comes , I can tell the joy from her voice. she is happy for the people live there.

    • @kevinyaucheekin1319
      @kevinyaucheekin1319 4 года назад

      YO BLUE COPPER Nope the point i wish to convey is that there is a need to protect the fruits of R&D paid for by taxes extracted from a lower middle income country a duty a fidurcary duty. Profits if any so should accured to the citizenry of that state. Sometimes the state need to aquire influence the best mechanism is to ensure benefical interest accured to key Policy makers within the establish power structures of targerted state. Confering benefits that accure to those who are essentially voiceless and mayhaps even hostile to core critical interest of your state is crass stupidity. A determination of the impact degree of positive returns as measured as to benefits of how said aid helps in the attaiment of your goals is necessary. Essentially enumeration of the cost effectivness of you aid does it confer positive benefits. My assessment is that on this issue context the probable benefitcaries of the aid given its cost assuming the bio tech enhancement is of substantive commercial value the balance is negative. The analogly is that their is a need to embedded protection into your technological developments especially if it can be easily stolen ie Terminator analogous tech. A iron rule of history no.2 ((If you know the value of everything but the cost of nothing you gonna go bankrupt.)) Values are important but ensuring a positive hard benefical result greater then the cost/ effort expanded trumps values generally. Also this you tube video was somewhat misleading it should have been titled development of enhanced salt tolerant rice.

      @blue copper There is always the option of using your traditional saved seeds from harvest past. Nobody compels anybody to buy Monsanto seeds with terminator genes. They purchase said seeds with eyes wide open situationally aware of the impediments. Old imperial China was not very concerned about cost their concern was over neblous values of the imperial court. You can't eat values. This new scientific socialistic China need to focus on the cold hard calculus of benefits and cost for this new China is suppose to serve the people of China not the world. In this it more or less do deliver. However they did not do their sums really do their sums on this issue. I am situationally aware of the probable ultimate recipents if this strain is given gratis, in my assessment the costs greatly outweight the benefits assume the new strain lives up to the hype. I can't say it here need to maintain decourm. Also always bear in mind iron law of history no.2 If you know the value of everything but the cost of nothing your gonna go bankrupt. Like the Ming Court which flittered awavy peasent tax levies on grandoise useless costly journeys of Admiral Cheng Ho which yielded nothing as compared to the royal courts of Spain and Portgual which spent very much smaller sums focus on yields and the great benefits that accured to their states. Values trash values as opposed to hard profits benefits.

    Yuan Longping's work on hybrid rice and the present research on growing rice on saline soil deserve a Nobel Peace Prize. However, this is unlikely as the Norwegian Nobel Committee is very anti-China. Thus far the Dalai Lama and Liu Xiaobo are the only Chinese Nobel Peace Prize laureates and they were rewarded for their anti-China activities. I hope the Norwegian Nobel Committee will come to their senses as the Nobel Peace Prize is generally recognised as a political prize. For example, what had President Obama done to deserve a Nobel Peace Prize ?

    Wow!! I'm moved. This is a clear testimony that "necessity is the mother of invention" but in Africa, the opposite is the case due to nature's abundance which explains a phenomenon that "Abundances could be the mother of inertia" How I wish we learned from Israel and China innovation by ignoring our comfort zone and face necessity of our future survival due to rapid population growth. For me, this article should be a work up call for our clueless leaders. Africa needs people of authority to be visionary in their leadership but in one score those without authority are reservoirs of innovation and vision. May we all contribute for a better world in our own way, amin.

      Uncle Donald is said to be unpredictable.
      For political or other reasons, he seems to align his right-wing morality to some aspects of Christian Protestant morality that the Roman Church, both East and West do not in practice maintain, but who defend these values theoretically because of their historical theological development, such as the right to life and protection of the unborn and the vulnerable. I have nothing against that.
      What Uncle Donald can do is to realize that the centralistic model of charisma that this Roman religion created is not good for the people of the world who are beset by many problems. This centralism is so much part and parcel of Pauline Roman state theology: it is the basis of how many Third World including Islamic countries operate in assuming that others will solve their problems by transfer of knowledge and techniques ("...seek knowledge, even if it means going to China......" is one of their wisdom sayings). Just as China's successes in the field of rice cultivation is due to its internal social structure of value attribution and respect for people, as well as its capacity of organization and learning from past experiences, these traits must be inculcated in other people so that they can be in the problem-solving mode, as the Chinese are. The Roman world order has ensured this has never taken place over the last 2000 years of its political and religious hegemony. They are in danger of making China function in the same way as itself. Just creating dependency thru technological domination and supremacy is a curse, and I am sure the right wing Christians in America appreciate this, since the Bible, their word of God, says that Man is made in the image and likeness of God, and they should use all their power to make sure this is realized in every population of the earth, by not promoting corruption, cultural and racial containment, indolence, fraud, violent religions and terrorism, but by encouraging people to solve problems by upbuilding and not sabotaging native infrastructure and getting rid of the indigenous elites such as academics, politicians, and others who were rewarded for destroying the place by creating dependency and disorder and suppression.

    Question: Can you irrigate them with salt water? Fresh water is a huge problem in many arid land, yet sea water is available (Middle East).

      That is why its called seawater rice, and they do says in video the rice are more resistant to high salt water

      @@JR-zm7ju After doing some searching, I found in other videos, they use a combination of fresh and seawater. Obviously the rice wont survive in pure seawater.
      Somewhat limiting though on parts of the world where there is no fresh water but had lots of sea water (middle east)

      I think: "Not even close"! They're still talking "parts per million", where seawater is some per cent of salt, it's not just a little bit. They didn't use the word, but I think in English this might be called "brackish water". The salt is already in the GROUND!

      @blue copper the first salt water rice video I've seen was about the brackish water. I'm sure it's not as salty as the ocean water but I'm sure it's still quite salty. Next to the rice pay looked like a bay.
