I love soul station one of my favourite blue note albums. I love Hank Mobleys playing style. Wynton Kelly is an awesome pianist. I bought my first blue note record the other day. A 1966 first pressing of Don Cherry Complete Communion. I absolutely love it. Might not be your cup of tea though but I think it's quite accessible.
Hi Gary - yeah Soul Station is my all time favorite. I do see some Don Cherry from time to time but have not pulled the trigger yet. I do have the Coltrane/ Cherry record on Atlantic. ~Jason
I failed to mention that the shrink was not sealed, so that I could pull the record out and inspect it for all the earmarks (no pun intended) of an original mono. I'm just concerned that if I remove the wrap to enjoy the laminated cover, there might be some residue left on the jacket. Your opinion and/or your readers' thoughts would be appreciated.
The laminated covers usually clean up quite nicely. I use a dab of 70% isopropyl alcohol to clean them, any higher % alcohol and you risk damage in my experience. Note this only really works for laminated covers. I have damaged non laminated covers. Personally, I remove all shrink wrap on new or old records. ~Jason
Congratulations Jason…I have the MMatters edition of this masterpiece but the original pressing is always the best…our love for Mobley’s music is the best way to remember a great artist….my best regards from Sicily
Jason. First off Congratulations. To see you got your number one is awesome to hear. On EBAY you did exactly what I feel is the proper approach. You go for the max you feel comfortable paying and if it goes higher walk away. Awesome stuff buddy.
Jason that was an awesome story congratulations big time that copy is beautiful still one of my major wants big time . Man you been at it heavily hope you find even more in the future Jason take care . Lovellandrew
Hi Kieran - thanks for the note. Yeah, happy it went well below my max bid. If it didn't, I wouldn't have lost any sleep. Just so excited to finally score this bad boy for my collection. ~Jason
A BIG congrats to you, Jason. I found a mono original years ago on the wall in a Tokyo record store. I'm debating whether to remove the shrink wrap on it or not. The record store manager surmised that the previous owner (also probably a record store) had put the wrap on it. Anyway, enjoy your grail!
Yup I’m not sure when shrink wrap became standard. Very cool story. I am going to Tokyo in the fall and certainly want to hit up some record stores! ~Jason
Terrific! A definite "pinch me" moment for you. Love the interplay of HM and Kelly on this record. I listen to it at least once a week. Now you need to designate a new #1 grail... 🙂
Happy for you Jason and really enjoyed the video so thank you. I have the Blue Note Classic version of this and it is up there with the best jazz records I’ve ever heard. I can understand why you wanted an original. Do you have the new Curtain Call Tone Poet? Thoughts on this?
Yup I agree it’s one of the best jazz albums. I don’t have Curtain Call yet, but know people who do and sing it’s praises - but sonically and the session. ~Jason
Yes! The Blakey solo definitely grabs one’s attention. The Classic Series is great - there should be high quality, affordable and available reissues of these records. ~Jason
For sure, I’m nearby across the river and just starting out collecting jazz. Always enjoyed, but never dove into collecting side of it, stuck mostly to other genres. Now I’m kicking myself for not starting earlier…but caught your name in Noble Records channel. Will have to run over to HR soon. Catch you around eventually I’m sure!
Wow, congrats Jason. I only have a 1978 Japanese (King Record) reissue. After watching your video, i have listened to side 1of my copy, and, what a stellar music ! Wynton Kelly is really great on this recording. By the way, the sound of this Japanese version is really excellent. But now, i have to go and listen side 2 :)) and i think about you, listening to your OG copy !!! so happy for you :) cheers, luca
Agree - this record is great because the artists have plenty of space to showcase their talents. The King reissues are a great way to get some of the more expensive or harder titles to find. I have a handful and they are great! ~Jason
@@TheJazzBasement yes, i'm just listening to my King reissue of Kenny Drew Undercurrent : great! Cannot afford an original pressing; and i don't see any 70's US (Liberty/UA) reissue on discogs. Not sure how much better is the 2014 Music Matters 33rpm , but not cheap !
That is one on my want list. A local shop had and original press a few months ago but it sold quickly (not to me). I’d be happy with any press I could get my hand on for sure. Maybe they will do a Tone Poet of it? ~Jason
It's a shame to think this great musician ended up broke and homeless near the end of his life. I'm sure the joy his music brings to us brings a smile to the middle weight champ...a true prophet.
You got a great deal man! Stoked for you!
Thanks for the push!

Hi Rocco - I had the MM SRX of this and I am really happy with it. Really happy with the OG press too. Thanks for watching! ~Jason

Thank you sir! It has been a heavy start to 2022. Wait for the next video….~Jason
Congrats! My grail is a Lg Ch Papa Gino’s circa 1986.
I feel you. With a side Buffalo nuggets and PAC Mac? ~Jason
Congrats Jason! That’s really awesome, and the condition is just beautiful. Happy for you man! Take care
Hey Trent - thanks man! ~Jason
Congrats Jason. Nice to hear it went for less than your max bid. Always enjoyed the detailed story. Enjoy! - Kieran

Yes! The Blakey solo definitely grabs one’s attention. The Classic Series is great - there should be high quality, affordable and available reissues of these records. ~Jason
Amazing. Well done!
Thanks Matt! ~Jason

Collecting jazz will be a whole new world of hurt, but in a good way! HR is a good place to start, they won’t steer you wrong. ~Jason
great.. how much did it cost you?? what was your max bid?? i love the channel.
Hi there - thanks! I don’t discuss prices publicly, but my max bid was $500 more than what I got it for. ~Jason

Hi Drew - yeah it is very sad. He was and is underrated. But at least we have his music to savor today. ~Jason
Congrats
Thanks Drew!
Do you have Coltrane jazz? It's just as good as Giant steps imo. I just got a copy yesterday, so now I have the complete session.
Soul station and Search for the new land in top 5. What's the other 3?
