John Travolta channels Elvis Presley doing Jail House Rock. Grease was part of the fifties nostalgia wave of the seventies. Sha Na Na, American Graffiti, Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley. After Grease John Travolta starred in Urban Cowboy and Blow Out and in a sequel to Saturday Night Fever titled Staying Alive that didn't go over well and John Travolta started to lose his draw at the box office as the eighties went on. He did find success in the rom-com Look Who's Talking with Kirstie Alley. Pulp Fiction revitalized his career, and Get Shorty helped too. Then he made a series of action films, Broken Arrow, Face/Off, and kept on going. The Punisher, heh, yeah! Also check out John Travolta in his first film role, The Devil's Rain (1975), a campy 1975 supernatural horror film with a cast including William Shatner, Tom Skerritt, Ernest Borgnine, Eddie Albert, and Ida Lupino along with John Travolta and featuring Anton LaVey as High Priest of the Church of Satan. YMMV.
He started his career playing Vinnie babarino on TV show 'welcome back kotter' in the 1970s which is also a role that's very different

By Pulp Fiction, Travolta was already in classic movies everyone had seen. They were Grease and Saturday Night Fever. And, in Grease, Travolta's character was tough (for a 1950's high school greaser)...but he definitely didn't kill anybody like Vince Vega
