Back in the early 80's, when this was originally released, the band received an honour from a native American organisation for highlighting the plight of their ancestors.

My hat is off to you Sir for not only putting into words the very same things I felt when listen to Iron Maiden tracks for the first time. Everything about this song is iconic, from the lyrics to vocals to bassline to guitar solo. But what gets me the most are the drums. That pause and then doogla dish! Doogla dish! Followed later by doogla doogla doogla doogla do! You can’t listen to the song without doing some air drums at that point.
And that’s why I love it and Maiden in general: every instrument is represented. You can hear every member play, unlike other bands where their songs are primarily singer and guitar, with the rhythm section kind of just in the background. And even on guitar, with two leads, there’s usually two separate solos. And a bass solo to boot.

I'd say Maiden is Maiden. Harris tried out quite a few musicians and singers before they got their breakthrough ca. 1980, he is famously ruthless when it comes to who gets to be in his band. Murray, McBrain, Smith et.al. wouldn't be in Maiden if they weren't superb musicians and contributors. He's a manager, Harris, very clever. He wanted a certain sound, a certain level of performance, and didn't stop until it was to his satisfaction. Took him six or seven years, but listen to their first two albums, not to mention the rest of their 80's output, and what you hear is the result of stubborness, hard work, plus of course a genius at work.

Im really glad you're not one of those that stop the music every 30 sec to comment. The facial expressions during the listening says it all :) I remember my first time listening to Iron Maiden as it was yesterday. I was about 7 or 8 and the only music i had really heard was my parents music in the car or at home. So one time we went on a trip to my uncle's house and he asked me if i wanted to hear some cool music that he liked. So he put on the album The Number Of The Beast and now 26 years later i have been on Iron Maiden 10+ times and have 3 tattos. Steve Harris on one arm. Bruce dickinson on the other and Eddie with the puppet devil on my back :)

The galloping bass, the harmony guitars and Air Raid Siren Bruce Dickinson are probably the three trademarks of a Maiden classic. My recommendation for a follow-up would be Aces High.
EDIT: A good "off camera" Maiden song for a musical epic would be "To Tame a Land". The lyrics are about the sci-fi novel "Dune", so they are a bit impenetrable if you aren't familiar with the book... but musically it's one of their better epics.

The fact Maiden welcomed back Adrian Smith yet retained Janick Gers - making the guitar section a trio - has made for some incredibly mesmerizing live performances as far as guitar harmonies go. And seeing them trading 'n sharing solos is cool AF. I *love* Maiden's guitars!(*)
      (*) (and Nico's happy drumming, Steve's incredible creativity, Bruce's incredible energy... F*ck they're good!

Number of the Beast is a great album. It was the first with Bruce Dickinson on vocals and it's the record where they moved beyond quasi-punk and into what would later be dubbed classic metal. My personal favorite from Number is "Children of the Damned" but there really isn't a weak tune to be found.

Loving your reactions, I have binged on them today. Maiden is indeed a band that paints pictures with their music. Many of their most famous songs are based on literature or movies. They are still creating this kind of haunting music today. A much more recent song that I would love to see a reaction to is "Passchendale", a story of the horrors of WW1 told from the perspective of a British soldier facing the inevitability of his death in one of the bloodiest battles in human history.
