  • Hi guys welcome back! We decided to react to the song "Run To The Hills" by Iron Maiden. We were quite surprised with the lyrics, but we then understood that awareness is often brought up through shock value content. The song was catchy, well performed as always. Thank you for the suggestion!
Feel free to leave comments and suggestions down below!

Edit: and one of the best iron maiden songs for that reason. They often have a lyrical structure that is more like epic poetry, with definite narrative arcs and such.

When it comes to Iron Maiden, you don't have to worry about their lyrics indicating something about their own personal views :) Yes, they sometimes write about war, politics, etc., even from different perspectives, but I'm sure they are all on board with the idea that when the Native Americans were invaded, it was a horrible tragedy for the tribes. They sing about the horrors of war/dictatorship/etc. rather than celebrating it, if that makes sense.

    WASP - Trail Of Tears
It's a ballad with excellent voçals by Blackie Lawless about the Cherokee, Seminole and other native tribes of the Southern states being forced onto reservations beginning in the 1830s resulting in thousands of deaths. In legend a white Cherokee rose grows along the trail for every tear shed by a mother who lost a child.

Of course it's catchy, it's an Iron Maiden song! But yes this some is considered a ballad and it's told from both prospectives. As a native American myself, I love the song and what it's about but it was made at a time where everyone wasn't too politically correct or culturally sensitive to there's that lol. Yep, the galloping rhythm was meant to convey the period of the time the song takes place.

It’s supposed to be disconcerting. It’s supposed to shine light on the subject.
And it’s not a “happy” song musically - it’s supposed to be high energy and creates a sense of urgency. It is a “galloping” beat to simulate a cavalry of horses chasing down the natives. That’s the point here. In a time where it’s taboo to discuss such matters, back in the early 80’s this English band is telling a tale obout how bad this time in history was. Maiden is to be commended for this effort.

Iron maiden early late 70's early 80's. Metallica, exodus, anthrax, slayer early eighties, 90's and still around. Pantera late 1998 to 2004.

Great song and one of the "New Wave of British Heavy Metal" bands I first listened to as a teenager. I bought the album this track is on (Number of the Beast) when it was released in 1982 I think... Vinyl of course, CD was very new and I'd never seen one at the time.

  • @PotawatomiThunderNew
    @PotawatomiThunderNew 4 года назад +10

Okay so I’m both Native American (I’m Potawatomi) and a massive Iron Maiden fan. And this is how I’ve always felt about the song: I do like the song, I want to let that be known first. My only issue with the content is that it’s from our perspective for like the first few lines, and for the rest of the song it’s from the white settlers perspective. I know it’s meant to be about the way my people were mistreated and it’s not meant to be celebratory about it, but still the fact that the majority of it is from their perspective makes it feels unbalanced in my opinion. But I do think the chorus is from a 3rd party perspective. But because I understand the approach and because I like the song and how it sounds, I think it’s a good song. I do listen to it sometimes. Although it’s hard to sing along to. I’m someone who loves to sing along with the music, and Iron Maiden’s music is like the most fun to sing along with, but it’s pretty difficult to sing along with this one though. The chorus is fine, the intro is fine, and I love doing the vocalization after the guitar solo before the last chorus comes in, but I go kinda silent on the verses. To utter lyrics like “chasing the redskins back to their holes” and “the only good injuns are tame” is hard to do with enthusiasm. As someone who’s Native and proud of who I am and where I come from, if I sings those lines at all, I can’t help but just kinda mumble them. It just doesn’t feel right coming out of my mouth. But overall, I can say I do like the song. To be honest, the thing that gets me the most isn’t actually the content, but the fact that it’s coming from a band who is from England. If they were an American band or something that would be one thing, because it would be something they at least have a little bit of stake in. But because they are an English band, it’s like seeing someone that doesn’t have much to do with you giving their take on what they think the situation is/was. I don’t mean it’s a bad thing, but it’s something that’s just kinda weird to me and strikes me as odd.

The person who wrote this song is part native american. I think people misunderstand the lyrics. It's switching from a native view to an angry narrator bitterly condemning the genocide.
It doesn't make sense to say it is from invading soldiers perspective at all, why would the soldier say he is taking their gold or raping and why would he talk of himself in third person when Cree person talked in first person?

The chorus can be either from the invaders perspective, chasing down the Natives, taunting them and so on, but it could also be the Natives telling there people to run, save yourselves we're outnumbered etc. That's what I think🤔🤔🤔 but it shows the 2 perspectives excellent song intelligent song. It was a very cleverly written song as it shows views from both perspectives - The Native Americans and the British Colonialists. That was unusual in the 80’s as people weren’t as conscious of other races and cultures as they are now. In most countries Native Americans were still being called ‘injuns’, in total ignorance. Also, the music was written is such a way that it sounded like galloping horses which would have been heard on both sides. Intelligent lyrics from an intelligent band.

Yes when the song was written the first part of the song told the point of view of the Great tribes which were destroyed by the U.S. Expansion across the West. When it gets to the Chorus that is told from the Natives telling the other tribes warning them of the danger of the U.S. Calvary which had been historically annihilating the Great Tribes during the expansion. The majority of the Song is of coarse told from the point of the view of the U.S. Calvary, as well as the unspeakable acts which were committed during this time. The official video translated what the message was very well at the time of it's release. The single sleeve juxtoposed the historical significance of what the song was about. Eddie the 'ead (the zombie corpse) seen on all the artwork through out Maiden's career stands upon a rocky hill in hell with a hatchet in hand battling Lucifer who is wielding a pitchfork, while demons from hell watch the battle. Since Run to the Hills was the first single released off of Number of the Beast that was why the Battle between Eddie and Lucifer were on the sleeve of the single, to tie in with the concept of the album title.

It's a commentary on a piece of history I agree with. When people speak of minorities they don't mention the original "American" minority. Been to a Native American reservation lately? And no I am not Native American

Back in the 1980s, we could actually talk and sing openly about "sensitive" topics. No PC life. Reality. We tried to deal with reality, including the brutality of real history (and modern life).

Hey ladies - I truly enjoy your reactions. I appreciate your generosity with the Metallica reactions. I know there are a lot of other bands to cover, but when you get back around to Metallica again, please react to their song, "Mama Said", from the "Load" album. It is a very different sound than what you've heard from them. Thank you, and keep up the good work.

Not white guilt more like British guilt if anything because there were plenty of "white people" in America today and in the 80's that had nothing to do with colonizing America.

not that it needs saying, this song is not glorifying the murder of native americans. its telling a story based on historical fact. cynical and in fact condemning the injustice.

As an American with an Indian heritage I see both sides. You have to also realize that different Indian tribes were annihilating other Indian tribes to take their lands, crops, women and livestock before the Spanish came, then the English came and then the Colonials came. In the end of it all you, me and every person commenting here are sitting on land that was once owned by natives and it was taken over time. At least here in America we get paid monthly by the U.S. government as part of the conditions when being put on reservations.
