The problem with the evil overlord list is that it assumes that you being an unaccountable tyrant with no hesitation with ruthlessly dealing with anything perceived to be a problem isn't going to result in your mindset getting warped. People go crazy just for a few thousand likes on Twitter and RUclips.

    • @lootgoblinmarketplace

You are absolutely right. That’s why I think that the party should definitely question why their friend is so quiet to eliminate “threats”. At a certain point the main went from getting vengeance to those who wrong them to preemptively striking those who will wrong him. That paranoia could make them an enemy very quickly.

This is such a morally ambiguous story. Like... it LOOKS bad on the surface but... everything seems to have a good and valid reason. Like... he's objectively helping people and bringing species together... the story doesn't talk about him repressing people or oppressing them, it doesn't make him out to be a cruel overlord. He seems like a good person trying to do what's best who just wound up making an empire that looks evil but actually helps people... Like... Is he the bad guy in this scenario if everything he's doing is actually helping people? It's not like he's going on genocide campaigns or just randomly conquering nations... Like... he only takes people over if they don't trade with him, he provides free energy to all of his subjects, he's made his kingdom safe... so long as he's not doing evil shit that wasn't brought up then everything he is doing is, strictly speaking, a good thing, right? God I'm so conflicted...

This is such a good story, because I can totally see myself making exactly the same decisions if I were a player. The messages of progress and interspecies equality resonate with me, and I would have looked at the red flags and black towers and said, "Don't judge a book by its cover."
But if I were a young adventurer in a neighboring kingdom that everyone knew was next to be invaded, oh my gosh that's clearly an evil empire and I would fight against it tooth and nail!

I really, REALLY love how this story replicates real world, where there's not a lot of examples of clear "good" and "evil". Insert some mainstream examples here, like Fritz Haber or Verner Von Braun ( one created both fertilizer that cancelled upcoming worldwide food crisis, AND chemical weapons, another made both German ballistic missiles And the entire American space program). Even here we can make approximation and say "they were good when the were doing THIS and evil when doing THAT.
But in a fantasy DND setting...
Let's take as a postulate: Empire must either grow or die. Expanding is, in long perspective, the only way for an empire to stay alive.
So was it evil? Only criterias that come to mind sound like 13-years-old-radical-liberal sort of thing, like, what were the conditions for tons workers and farmers who were supplying resources for empire? What was emperor doing with the opposition? We have heard how one of PC's was bis right hand in getting rid of the enemies of the state, but was it FBI/National Security sort of thing or was it completely wiping out anyone who dared to disagree? Had he ACTUALLY integrated other species into society (not only on words), and did he manage to NOT make even bigger inequalities INSIDE given species? (Higher class orks, goblins, humans, any-other-species are equal, but now they finally have opportunity to oppress lower classes of their own species)?
And I have just realise that instead of sleeping before another day in university, i was dilettante-analysing fictional story without intention to make any conclusions.
Sooo, conclusions...? Well. Always think for yourself. Look at the deeds, not the words. Take care of yourself as you would take care of your daughter - brush (her) your teeth regularly, brush (her) your hair, give (her) yourself enough of sleep, don't blame too hard on fails and appreciate successes.
And by all means, don't trust yourself about how your life's feeling if it's after 9 PM. "but bedtime is the only time my mind is clear!" - my friend, take literal 20 minutes during day, take off your headphones, put away your phone and try to enter that state of mind and actually start thinking.
And god. Drink more liquid. 1.5 liters per day as MINIMUM. Coffee, juices, sodas don't count. Water or tea.

      2) I had a speech class in high school where we gave speeches in class. The thing the teacher always made comments for me was speaking too fast. When I gave speeches back then, I memorized the speech and repeated it in class from memory, not stopping to actually express myself, so it came off as me just trying to knock the assignment out and be done. End result was I was speaking at the speed I think, not what I speak. So I wasn't giving my audience time to digest what I said.

While drop the volume on my PC down so I can watch, my attention is split between the 2. So to hear both sides of a conversation in the same voice is a little confusing.
