Reminds me of my pet slime named jerryman that I used to assassinate people by slipping him into people's drinks and having him choke the person from the inside out
Now I’m imagining a Kirby type race of slimes that are fairly weak on their own, but absorbing things can give them the bonuses of a certain thing, but you can only have one, maybe 2 at once. And it would have a little cartoony face :)
Hear me out: everyone in the party gets turned into slimes with differences based on their original race. Humans are pink slimes, Elves are golden, dwarves get little rock decals, etc.
A Kirby race would also maintain their bonuses using Spellcasting Concentration mechanics. Too hard of a hit (just like in the video games) and Concentration drops on your precious bonuses. To balance it further, you can suck in a creature and absorb its related bonuses, at which point the creature is spat out probably VERY angy, as a full action (you’d need to make a Constitution check if you’re sucking in something big, or something from far away, but it’s an instant absorb/spit out if you’re in 5 feet of the target creature).
About what the GM did with the Boss Tengu... (I don't play Pathfinder, please correct me if I'm wrong) Instead of "uhhh, he casts a spell and something goes wonky, he's immune to your attack now" the GM could have said "he drops to one knee, almost dead. But before anyone can finish him, one of the frozen tengu defrosts and screams "WE SURRENDER!"" Honestly feels more... normal. You got him low, but not enough to kill him. GM can say that creatures have X health over the average.
I once ran an encounter where all the enemies got stuck in a choke point when there was a perfectly good second way out and they didn't need to be standing in a death conga line. I honestly just forgot that there was a second way around until the party had basically annihilated them. There were like 9 enemies against 5 players, 3 of them fairly powerful, basically waiting in line to be killed. At least I had already established the in game excuse that this bunch wasn't particularly bright, and almost all of them were pretty tipsy. The last dude left alive had just been standing in the middle of the group bemusedly and looked around at the end and realized all his pals were dead and immediately surrendered. Whatever his name was before, the party renamed him 'Tibo Wetbritches'. He's too terrified to protest. (Also DM pro tip - if your players ask for the name of a random NPC you never intended to RP, ask them what they think the NPC's name should be. My players actually enjoy it, almost like some kind of mini-game. That has led to a nothic being called either 'Greg' or 'Mike Wizowski', neither of which are remotely close to whatever his name probably used to be. But my players know immediately who we're talking about, so it's effective if nothing else.)
The reason the DM got pissed at the end was probably because this was likely a "half henderson" moment. The DM probably had a subplot stemming from this battle and the party just basically completely derailed it by winning. Speaking of Henderson, I know it's Trail of Cthulhu rather than D&D but you really should consider covering the story of Old Man Henderson at some point.
To me, it sounds like the encounter drug on after the grease, so the GM started to "clean up after themselves" and kill off more of their tengu by saying they rolled poorly. The boss attempting to push the slime seemed like the GM was allowing the boss to act stupid, get killed, and award the party with a win on purpose. But then having the "random" magic go off contradicts that. I obviously don't know what their plan was, but I'd honestly have let the players kill the boss at that point. The boss now conveniently has a twin who wants to carry out they mission and has reason to hate the party.
Finally another video to watch and enjoy, great job! I do really feel like the dm just forced the entire surrender and boss surviving thing a bit too much but overall it was a great story.
I do agree that the boss surviving felt forced, it’s possible that they had plans for him and the party beating him so early put the plot in jeopardy. Sometimes you have to let them die anyways and find another way.
Kinda low acting from the GM there. I mean I get he had this story idea set up, but c'mon, if you're just going to fudge everything so it comes out how you want anyway, why are you GMing instead of writing a novel? No no, I get it, the guy had an idea and spent a lot of time setting it up and all, but it IS a game. Maybe not one where there's clear cut "winners" and "losers" most of the time, but geeze, man. Take a break; let the party know you need an extra week or something because they broke the rails and use that time to see what you can do to recover/rearrange things.
