    Nice to see a short to the point video for a change. I wish more people understood it's not Hollywood.

    I like the fact that you said 98% of the time it is the power pack. I have a 1977 like new real low hours 15 Johnson pull start from original owner. One cylinder quit but after warming the one up the next pull they both started. After a couple more times out same thing, one then two but then both quit and won't pop at all. Power pack on order and fuel pump. Just as well replace both due to aging more than wear and tear.

    • @8Pointbuck
      @8Pointbuck 6 лет назад +2

      Yes it was the power pack 100% of my time!

  • @fleetwin1
    @fleetwin1 8 лет назад +4

    I'm glad it worked out, but could have been something as simple as a bad stop circuit or bad ground to the powerpack. The stator and timer base components can be checked with the flywheel still in place using an ohm meter along with a peak reading voltmeter.

    Trust me I've worked on outboards for 35 years and when it comes to spark problems , losing spark or intermittent spark , very hard to diagnose. If only 98% of the time it was the cdi box . I'd even carry one as a spare on and off the water 😂😂😂😂

    Power packs don't usually quit nearly as frequently as people think. Yes, if there is no spark it's either a powerpack, charge or sensor coil, or a bad connection somewhere (kill switch, bad ground, wires that barfed somewhere).

      TCMDOC did you ever get to the bottom of your problem? i am having the exact same issue with my 89' 70hp vro johnson.. only sparking on the bottom cylinder. and even that is hit and miss. once and a while the other 2 cylinders will spark once or twice. sounds like i am in the boat you were in..

    I definitely do not concur with 98% of the time it's the power pack. I've had an awful lot of faulty kill buttons, bad N switches, faulty shifters and corroded battery cables come into my shop with the same spark issue. Always rule out the very minor issues before you cough up your cash.

    • @fernandog.3366

      Mr. FatBasstard, im having similar problems. How can one know if its the kill switch or shifter....?

    • @mr.fatbasstard648
      @mr.fatbasstard648 7 лет назад +3

      Fernando Gomez search 'Dangar Marine' on RUclips. If you like to work on your own outboard he has a great You Tube site.
      If you have an outboard tiller motor more than likely you have a kill button. Check the contact inside the rubber boot of the button and make sure it's not stuck on the wiring contact posts of the kill wires. For kill switches and buttons check the wiring harness and wires and make sure you don't have a contact fault. 'If' your outboard is equipped with a neutral switch do a quick visual inspection for your selector switch and kill wires.
      It's pretty standard procedure to rule these devices out before spending $80-140 on a power pack.
      Good luck brother.

    • @fernandog.3366
      @fernandog.3366 7 лет назад

      Do all 3 cylinders have to give out for it to be the kill switch issue or can it occur in only one cylinder? I have 2/3 cylinders that fire but while taking the boot from the spark plug wire of the spark plug on the cylinder not firing, I did receive a small shock to my hand. I believe that eventually it is firing but something is preventing the power pack from distributing the spark. Power pack is new and person who sold me the motor states that power packs do give out but usually have a long life expectancy. I do have issues with the shift box as well, which sometimes I notice that it wont turn on when turning the key switch. I have to give it some small taps with my palm and it will turn on after doing so..
      Any tips help, thanks buddy..

      Mr. FatBasstard, I'm going through a similar problem with my evinrude 70 hp. My motor ran fine last week but today I tried cranking it and it would not turn over. I'm only getting spark in the bottom spark plug so I'm not getting spark in the top two spark plugs. I know the coils and spark plug wires are good so does this sound like a power pack issue or something else? Also, I did notice the Bendix starter gear is stuck in the up position in the flywheel. Do you think this is related to the spark issue I'm having or is this a completely separate issue?

    • @mr.fatbasstard648
      @mr.fatbasstard648 7 лет назад +2

      Nic Mullins that is definitely a power pack symptom. But never rule out the 'something else'. You never mentioned the year of your Evinrude 70hp or your starter model # but here's what I would do before taking your motor to the shop or forking out the money on a new power pack. Visually check all of your electrical connections starting from the battery box. R/R where necessary. Because of your starter issue I'm questioning a consistent stable output from the battery to the starter motor. Is your battery dedicated to your motor or does it run other accessories? If so try going straight battery to motor with clean secure connections. If that is not the prolbem I recommend purchasing a good reliable multi meter and youtubing/google 'Dangar Marine' Stu has a ton of good outboard repair videos. Including four or five videos on power packs alone. Depending on the power pack model, having spark in one cylinder does not mean the power pack is good and something is wrong in the motors electrical system for the remaining cylinders. Were you having any starter/starting issues prior to your two cylinder non-sparking issue?

      Old power pack trick... they stop functioning many times as they get moisture in the pack over time.
      Before replacing (or for a spare) remove pack, oven bake at 150 deg F for 2 hrs. Remove from oven
      (with a mitt, Please). While still warm spray all wire inputs on the pack with WD40, let cool. Wipe dry.
      Many times this will resurrect a dead or intermittent pack.

    Hi mine is a 94 evinrude 60 hp. Great motor but low revs to 1500rpm getting worse. It always starts on 2 cylinders, stalls a bit when cold then will eventually run all day on 3. I do notice, however, when its running in shallow water at an angle and i motor into deeper water (still when its a bit cold) and I lower the motor right down, it runs on 2 again and won't run nicely until its very warm. So, the effect of running it at an angle and when cold wakes it run rough. Its really good at any revs over 1500rpm. I have run motor cleaner through it, I use top quality oil and the plugs are good. Could this be spark plug leads, blockage in the carb, power pack or something else?

      It also could be a trim sensor. Depending on year of motor, if the trim sensor is bad it will tell the motor to limit rpm to about 4500 tops as it is getting a resistance reading that it interprets as the motor being at a high trim angle out of the water.

    Please detail what the voltages should be in and out of the power pack at all connections. Simply telling us to replace it is ridiculous (expensive). Also detail each ground wire and testing each coil resistance.

    • @russg1801
      @russg1801 7 лет назад +1

      You typically should be getting 150v peak AC or a bit more out of the stator to the pack. Each one of the trigger wires will deliver about 1.7V; that's all it takes to signal the switching transistor to discharge the capacitor. If the stator and the trigger are good then it's most likely the pack;' you can switch leads to the coils to see if they fire as you will never lose three coils at once.
