I really appreciate this video. I’m somebody who is typically exceptional with creating essays, however I get lost with writing anything regarding myself and my experiences. I was stuck with my introduction, lacking a real hook, but this video really helped me. Thank you!
Writing about ourselves is SO hard - I definitely get that. The key is to just lead them into a story and put yourself in the mindset of like, a main character - it definitely makes it more fun haha. Glad I could help! Good luck! :)
1. Unique Topic (As personal as possible) 2.Start with a super personal anecdote descriptive as hell(adjective adjectival phrases etc.) 3.The last sentence should be what the essays gonna be about.
You got it! Will add it to my list - I'll try to make the video focused on how to emphasize growth and reflection in college essays. :) Hopefully can post it in the next few weeks!
Do you think writing about my first orchestra audition and how I went from having the fear of failure to focusing more on having fun by collaborating with the different people I meet from different county’s is a good idea?
For sure! You just have to make sure you have a common thread throughout and one specific point you're trying to make. Trying to tell the reader too many things while trying to be creative is hard, so as long as you have that specific point, you're good. And of course, it's gotta be something that's really important to you. :)
Thanks for some really good advice....i am currently in the process of writing my college essay and have a doubt. Can i use some quotes or short poems(that i wrote) in middle of the essay to make it even more beautiful to the reader which might explain few instances and are relatable to the topic?
Hey! I think that you have total creative license on the way you structure your essay, I'd really recommend not including more than 1 or 2 (and even these would have to be very relevant to your essay) since it might eat at your word count. :)
whats an example of a personal anecdote? to like introduce out of nowhere? i want to talk about how ive been living without my mom in order to pursue my education
You could pick a moment that kind of describes your day to day where you come home to someone else's house and not your mom's, and just introduce that moment descriptively in your intro! It can really be whatever you want, you just need to describe and use that moment to set the scene and bring the reader into your story.
Hey! Thanks so much for your comment. Yes I do edit essays, if you're interested you can shoot me an email. And yes so the colleges don't rank you, they just receive the class ranks and top X% of class numbers from your school and use that as a part of your application.
Hey! It depends on if you go with short form paragraphs or longer paragraphs, I'd say you should really think of it as an introduction to your story, and then whatever it takes to tell your story the right way! I personally like medium-longer form paragraphs where the topic sentence is indicative of what the paragraph's going to be about so I personally wouldn't do more than maybe 5-6 paragraphs at a maximum for my essay.
I've never read an essay that I thought was too out there, being unique is certainly a good thing! :) As long as it isn't derogatory towards others, I'm sure most topics go!
For your first point to describe a "scene" could I describe my time in the hospital? I had head surgery which resulted in memory loss and I want to use my traumatic brain injury in my essay and want to have an amazing into! If you could help that would be amazing! Also, I love your videos!
Since that's a very personal moment for you, that sounds like it would be a great way to start your college essay introduction! I'm not editing anymore as of now but will be in the fall again. :) Hopefully my other videos could help though!
