"WHY US" College Essay: Tips + Examples from my WHY UCHICAGO Essay

- This video'll tell you how to write a "why us" college essay. I'm going to give you a 4 point template on how to write yours, as well as concrete examples from my own Why UChicago essay!

I literally accidentally submitted my UChicago application WITHOUT WRITING MY ESSAY. I completely forgot about the essay potion and just submitted it, and early action came in today and I just knew they were going to reject me, but guess what? They freaking deferred me! I’m definitely doing my essay now and I’m going to make sure it’s strong since they are giving me this second chance!
I'm so glad they're giving you that chance - that's awesome!!! Definitely let admissions know it was by accident and send your essays in ASAP :)
"Why Us" ends up being a very manageable prompt once you break it down to the 4 section template that I mentioned - this can easily be attributed to shorter essays as well as longer ones! Hope this video helped, and let me know if you have any video suggestions!

Do you by any chance know how different this task is for applying to PhD?
Hi! Yes I'd say a PhD personal statement for graduate studies is definitely a bit more formal. You'd want to have an outline that details past coursework and education, experience (internship or professional), and research specifically in a story-like order. So it's similar to this, but I'd say much longer and slightly more formal. But of course, creativity is always important! 😊

Hi, I am applying for UChicago, and do have a quick question. When writing the "why UChicago" essay, is it better to format it in splits paragraph or one full length due to the word count that is suggested? Also, do they take points away if you do not stay within the word count; 250-500, or do they not penalize you whether if you stay on the word count or go over?
Most prob don’t want it to be over as they have to read and review a lot of essays. They’ll probably think wow this person can’t understand simple rules, so I’d say don’t. If you want to be completely sure talk with so of there reps, I’m sure they could answer that for you

should it be written in a creative writing style?
Great question! I write almost everything in creative writing style within a personal narrative format. It's totally up to you - I think that you be creative but still give them practical points. :)
HIIII, your videos have helped soo much! my extended essay is 740 and their suggested word limit is 650 should I shorten it ?
Thank you so much for keeping up with all of my videos! I would recommend reading through for repetition/redundancies and cutting some lines out. It's always hard to identify repetition in a college essay, especially through good writing, but if you can do that and cut out lines, that would be great.
A longer essay may detract from the story that you're trying to tell given how many essays the admissions board's going to read already. Good luck!
