thanks for that! I'm new at this, and have a cheap brush that has that valve. It was clear that it reduced air flow, but I just had no idea why! This explained it perfectly, and I'm eager to give it a go.
I have to say thank you for the informational videos. I just purchased my first airbrush kit with the Mac valve. I can't wait to practice and make something creative. I have to be truthful. I purchased the airbrush kit touch-up wrecked rc airplanes after repairing them. But watching your videos inspires me to do more than touching up wrecked rc planes.
Dude thank you! Just started airbrushing and couldn't find what was the purpose of that vale. I knew it reduced the airflow but couldn't find why. Now I know and once I figure out the ratio for thinning I might be good to go.
Thanks for the info,it’s very useful! I have an Iwata Revolution which I use for all my general work and a Sotar 20/20 which is for my fine work. I have quick connects on all my brushes but on one of my hoses I have the Mac valve built into the disconnect. I don’t use the Mac valve very much since I like to know what pressure I’m shooting at. That said, I usually thin all my paints 50/50 or 60/40 thinner to paint and at about 12-15 psi. The only time I use 25-30 psi is with Stynylrez primer. I work primarily on 1/87 HO and 1/160 N scale models. Watching you do large artworks has seriously tempted me to venture out of my box and try something more challenging. Again thank you for you videos, they are very informative and have answered many questions!
Thank you for your comment and kind words , glad you enjoy my vids and that you are tempted to try some larger scale artworks , I’m sure you will do amazing given that you are currently working on smaller projects and that takes control and precise details 👍🏻
Yeaaah good Demo! I also use the valve without reducer, in this way, I can spatter in a controlled way, less pressure thicker drops! More pressure thinnner paint drops!
Thank you for that. I actually stopped using airbrushes with a MAC valve, mostly because I didn't fully understand its purpose, or that paint dilation needed to be different. That was more the miss for me I think. I wasn't changing my dilution. I will most certainly give it a go...I might invest in a mac valve equipped airbrush soon
I have a MAC valve that is installed directly before the quick connect fitting on my airline so it is available to use on the airbrushes that don't come with one internally. It works a treat and serves a a bit of a handle at the same time. Have a great day, and thanks for the great video :)
Great video. I have a CRIOS PS-289 and didn't fully understand how to use this feature. Building Scale models I will have to give this a try instead of going to the compressor so often to fine tune the airflow. Thanks again for another awesome video!
Nice info on it's precision in comparison to playing with your main regulator. Wish u would have shown your take on spatter effect too. Thumbs up to all your help on the journey 👍
Thank you , I may show some spatter info in a later info if that helps 🤔 the main thing is the convenience and the fact that you can run the psi so low by using the Mac valve , if you run your psi too low on your compressor then it will work similar to a point and then it will start to spatter which is great if you want that effect 😉

Add the limiter into the mix and I have more control than I ever thought possible. My new Paache Talon does not have the MAC. Getting ready to polish needles tonight to make all my brushes better!
I use mine all the time, really comes in handy eliminating the need to adjust the air pressure at the regulator. Also, you can close off the MAC valve and pull far back on the trigger and get a spattering effect.
Thanks a lot for teaching how to use air brush and painting with it. I had some air brushes but never try it, out of fear of making mistakes. With your tips, I shall try.
Would you get the same effect, or a different one, if you had reduced the air pressure at the compressor/regulator, instead of using the "Micro Air Control" (Iwata's definition of the acronym) MAC valve?
Sure, but consider how much fiddling he did to dial it in, would you want to be doing that with the compressor directly? Would you then want to remember to reset to the proper psi on the compressor after? It's a convenience, much like. Oat features that drive up the price of an object
Yes, over thinning and dropping your psi will work but as others have mentioned here it is a convenience thing and also keep in mind that you are still getting full air coming into your brush the mac valve is only reducing the flow , therefore you can go really low which if you turn your compressor to the equivalent it may spatter your paint 👍🏻👍🏻

A MAC valve is a simple needle valve, and it controls Air Flow, not AIR PRESSURE, only a regulator can control Pressure. A Mac valve and the needle/Nozzle is the same thing, they both use a needle and seat to control flow. The nozzle is the seat, and the needle is the needle, they both control FLOW, JUST THE FLOW, EITHER THE FLOW OF LIQUID OR AIR, NOT PRESSURE!

It stands for ‘micro-air-control’ and Steve Jobs may well of had something to do with it lol 😂
Good luck
Mac valves do not control air pressure. Talk to a plumber and they can make it easy for you to understand pressure.
Thinning the paint seems to be the secret…
A MAC valve is a simple needle valve, and it controls Air Flow, not AIR PRESSURE, only a regulator can control Pressure.
A Mac valve and the needle/Nozzle is the same thing, they both use a needle and seat to control flow.
The nozzle is the seat, and the needle is the needle, they both control FLOW, JUST THE FLOW, EITHER THE FLOW OF LIQUID OR AIR, NOT PRESSURE!
perfect explanation on the valve i was wondering what the advantages of using it are so thanks from a rookie lol
No probs glad you found it helpful 👍🏻
