Vallee Blanche Arete - how scary is it?

The Vallee Blanche ski run is one of the longest, and most famous, in Europe. To get to the start, you take the Aiguille du Midi cable car from Chamonix, and then carry your skis down the infamous arete. Loads of accidents have happened here, but our guide had crampons and we were roped to him, so not much danger really.
This vid is for anyone thinking of doing the run, but worried about the arete.
Take a guide, unless you are an expert.
Highly recommended - we had an epic ski down the "Petit Envers" variant.

Went this way in the early '90s, but carried on along the ridge and skied over to the right rather than going down the left side, unless my brain has quarantined this bit of the memory to protect me. Fingers got extremely cold carrying skis, then hurt like hell when swapepd hands and circulation returned to them. Howling gale left-to-right the whole way along the ridge top, wind chill temperature -50°C. A few hundred metres of beautiful skiing, then the first crevasse and an area of crap fallen from the cliffs above where "More will come down today; we do not stop here," then we went into a tube. I was fourth in line, so I was hearing voices echoing up the tube: "Stay left! Stay left! Go right! Go right!" I stayed left, and there was a huge hole on the right. I went right, and there was a huge hole on the left. Out of the tube back onto the surface and it was crevasses all the way down. Single file behind the guide, on ice, between crevasses, and in one place over an ice boulder wedged in a crevasse, then eventually off the bottom and onto a lift out of there. I have never, in my entire life, been more glad to _stop_ skiing than I was that day.

I’ve done this 20+ years ago, way before GoPro .. probably wouldn’t have done it if I’d seen this first. Have to say best skiing day I’ve ever done though in glorious weather to boot.

Hi, It is because of certain danger areas during the walk down to the start of the ski route and that is where the rope/rail stops. :)

When I went down the Vallee Blanche in the 1970s this walk was not so good prepared. There was just one handrail and no prepared foottrace, just stepmarks. But perhaps the walk has become steeper and more difficult because the glacier has melted down.
