  • On a visit to Keenland, I decided to drive through the Kentucky Horse Park. The road led me to the Maker's Mark Secretariat Center. I was given a tour by an intern and then the center's director, Susanna Thomas provided an impromptu interview that I decided to turn into an 18-minute one-man-band piece that will hopefully shed some light on the difficulty of dealing with the retired thoroughbred population. Non-profits like the Secretariat Center and other members of the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance are definitely worthy of your donations.

Both of my Thoroughbreds were racers. I had my first baby when I was 4 yrs old. I got my second baby when I was 10 yrs. old. After I stopped showing, they retired and became our pets. Both of my horses helped bring up my kids. I had my babies until they were both 40's and went to heaven. They were more than just my horses, they were part of my heart and soul.

I adopted two OTTBs. They are magnificent animals. They deserve a wonderful life, as do all of God's creatures.

As an owner of a ex race horse who nobody wanted, I'm proud to say she's now 30 and still going strong and living on her own place. Just love her

I am just reading about this for the first time, and I thank you with all my heart for doing what you do. I am a very big animal advocate, and I volunteer at animal care and control. I rescue senior German Shepherd Dogs that been thrown away by their owners Who don’t want to spend $20 on medicine for arthritis. I understand animals that are not wanted anymore and it breaks my heart. I don’t live in a place where I can have a horse even though I have a fenced acre, but not zoned to have a horse. I bless you for what you’re doing. It’s so wonderful.

Thank you for what you do there. While they said here that it has his name but nothing to do with him they are wrong. Even now just his name helps fellow thoroughbred horses and those who love them. So thank you to all who run the center and The Great one who still has power in his name to help

It's the one nasty, dark story that the Thoroughbred Industry never wants to talk about is the number of Thoroughbreds that are sent to slaughter. Of all the greedy breeders who breed hundreds of foals but only keep a small handful for their own racing. So what happens with all those unwanted now yearlings? Off to their first auction. But what if they aren't sold there? It's never revealed where all those yearlings go. All breeders should be capped at a certain number of foals that they can breed to help get the numbers of unwanted Thoroughbreds down. Breaks my heart.

So sad. I’ve watched Ferdinand vs Alysheba ‘85 Breeders Cup classic. Recently learned Ferdinand was sent to Japan 2002 to be destroyed to be ‘consumed’. Horrid.
Applause to the Secretariat Center and other similar facilities.

Me encantan los caballos es mi pasión y más cuando estás con ellos. son inteligentes y en muchos casos bien cariñosos. Hay que estar con el animal y compartir junto a el o ella y verás como se adaptan a uno es una experiencia unica

Horse auctions are deplorable. Sending horses to slaughter is unacceptable, and should be illegal.

They breed 100 horses to get 10 "good" ones and maybe 1 "great" one. There are some who get a job, and some will go to pleasure riders, but there will always be an overflow. The racing industry is an ugly business.

Tragic. It's off-the-hook insane that horse racing is legal.

I am a racing fan, and am finding it harder and harder to defend. American racing is especially bad due to the lack of any real drug enforcement -it is a decentralized, inefficient, corrupt mess, with too many people who look the other way as drug cheats run rampant.
It is better in Europe -fewer breakdowns and better drug enforcement. The slaughter of racehorses goes on everywhere, however. Just disgusting.
