Used SLK55 AMG...Can you get more BANG for your BUCK ?!

- Inspired by my recent review of the Porsche 991 Targa 4S and Maserati Grandturismo I thought I would explore just how much bang you can get for your buck. The guys at Harbour Cars got in touch as they have a stunning Mercedes AMG SLK55. Amazing performance and this example could well be the best value used SLK55 in the UK. It makes an awesome noise, looks great and is an all round superb car.
A big thanks to Chris and the guys at Harbour Cars...

An accurate review of the SLK AMG 55 R172 . I bought one 9 months ago and love it. Peter forgot to mention that despite the engine being 5.5 litres it has the same co2 rating as a 2 litre Clio , thanks to cylinder shut off enabling 4 cylinder mode when driven carefully and the auto stop start saves fuel in traffic .This results in 30 mpg + on a 26 mile commute . I have driven in France on a weeks holiday with his and hers suit cases that could be removed from the boot even with the roof down. Having the folding roof is brilliant and in my mind why have a sports car without one. The chassis is very stiff and when I took the car up Prescott Hillclimb it handled pretty well although admittedly it is not a Boxter.
It can cruise gently but if you put your foot down it will surprise you ,and your passenger with ridiculous acceleration with the sound of a Spitfire at 100 ft (or maybe I should say Messerschmitt).
The price was good too for what you get as the same spec F Type would be £10 K more so everything is a compromise one way or another.
I think the SLK AMG 55 is a future classic as they will stop making V8's like this soon. I would recommend this car if you want something a bit special for long country roads in the summer that is also practical in winter. I try and save mine for sunny days though.
Thanks for the comment. Sounds like you get lots of use from yours :-)
i know im asking the wrong place but does someone know of a way to get back into an Instagram account?
I was stupid forgot the account password. I would appreciate any tricks you can offer me
@Lewis Judah instablaster =)
@Remy Hendrix I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and im waiting for the hacking stuff atm.
I see it takes a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Remy Hendrix it worked and I actually got access to my account again. I am so happy:D
Thanks so much, you really help me out!
The M152 V8 in this car is a non-turbo engine, basically the naturally aspirated version of the bi-turbo V8 engine.
I just sold my Z3M roadster & replaced it with a low mileage R231 SL500 in hyacinth red with cream leather.
Not the AMG SL63 admittedly. But not much less power or performance. It's more than enough. In fact I'm in awe of it. The fact it takes an extra 200 or 300 milliseconds to reach the legal speed limit compared to the AMG is immaterial. 0 - 60 in 4.5 is fine with me.
I considered an SLK55. But they're almost as expensive. A great little V8 roadster, but less car for the money. SLK55 £55k new. SL500 £85k new but only £3k or £4k more second hand for SL
What a fantastic looking car and what an awesome noise! Would never get tired of that noise! Never thought about an SLK 55 but really like it and love that it also has the hard top!
It's certainly thought provoking !
Watched this video last week and went out and bought one from ProMotors in Bournemouth on Saturday! Loving the car, thanks so much for the Vid.
You lucky thing 👍
Love the fact you’re on your knees worshiping the GT3 😆..... In terms of the Mercedes, you’re bang on, outside of the racetrack in real world motoring, a second hand V8 Mercedes SL or SLK gives you as much bang for your buck as you could wish for with the perfect soundtrack to every drive. You’ll always come back home with a smile on your face 😊
Ya gotta luv any car that makes ya smile every single time ya pull away.
Amazing car and a great bargain. Funny enough, I've just bought an SLK. Not the AMG 55, but its smaller brother, the SLK 350. I am so pleased with the car. They drive superb and the 350 is quick at 0 - 60 in 5.5 seconds as standard, but mine has been in the hands of CKS performance in Watford who have transformed the car with their performance package including engine remapping and fitting their quad exhaust. Sounds amazing. Cheers. Jon.
That sounds nice mate :-)
I have one and it is A LOT of fun. Stupidly quick, brilliant sound with the secondary cats out and top down. Plus it is a hard top.
Can you confirm where you had the exhaust upgrade carried out
Thanks
Thanks Pete, your opinion will always count on any car that I am looking to purchase, this car is under my radar, thanks for sharing as I missed this content.
Bought my 2007 SLK55 AMG (171) with only 9,000 miles on her. Paid $38,000. The original sticker said $71, 190. Best car I have EVER owned.
jimi hendrix I own this and still miss my R171.
How does the bitches love the car?
@@ANB433 Women don't even notice it. But men do! Guys flash their lights, thumbs up out their windows. They know what it is. As far as women, I might as well be driving a Corolla. But I bought it for ME. And I LOVE it!
jimi hendrix yeah I feel you on that one. I have a maserati GT 2014 and only guys notice it hahah 😅🥴.
How much is the maintenance? And how often? I am thinking on buying one from 2008
I owned a R172 SLK AMG and the engine is seriously tuned down, there is plenty of room for more power. The engine is the M152 naturally aspirated version of the bi-turbo V8. And hands down the most fun for the money.
What a great spec, with some great extra. It still looks great comparing that it is just over 5 years old.
Hi Pete, great video review thanks. I’ve posted the link to your video on the SLK world forum as I thought they would enjoy it.
Hi Andy. That's kind of you, thank very much :-)
Holding their value well too now that the slc43 has removed the V8.
They have a tidy looking rear, however, the previous gen with the slightly boxier bum wins the proper ‘bad ass’ look.
Slk55AMG R171 was so mean looking machine.
Lovely car, but I'm biased as I own one.. hate to correct your review, but there is no forced induction on these, this is a beautiful NA V8.
More than I paid with a 2 year tier 1 warranty 12 months ago, these are holding their value well as a future classic - the like of which will never be seen again.
+Dave Gregory Hi Dave. Thanks for the correction. My bad, not sure how I got my research so wrong 😳
:) I have just bought a 2014 version for a lot less than that one was up for. People are scared of V8's these days but mine returns mid 20's in MPG driven 'enthusiastically' and 32 plus on the motorway. It is keeping my '06 SLK 55 AMG company in my garage. The older '05-'10 R171 series was a complete yob, far more rough and ready. The later R172 series SLK's are 'Americanised' versions with the rough edges smoothed off, yobs that have been to finishing school. :)
@@imsoaring _"The older '05-'10 R171 series was a complete yob, far more rough and ready."_ *Ian, how so?* I'm trying to decide between the two SLK55 AMGs (R171 VS R172).
@@Matt_from_Florida Merc has 'Americanised' the car somewhat in the model shift to the 172. It's a little softer, a little more comfortable, a little more of a continent crossing gt than a sports car. The 171 although not really in the league of a small compact sports car is closer to that tradition. The 171 engine comes stock with 360 hp but can be made to push out over 400 by throwing money at it with headers and supercharger etc. The 171 looks more aggressive and the nose is iconic although the rear quarter haunches on the 172 are great looking. A tweaked and pampered 171 has more curb appeal than the 172. The 172 runs over 12:1 compression so forced induction is out ( A deliberate move by AMG/Merc ) but with 420 hp off the showroom floor only the track day and race owners are going to want more and to be honest you'd achieve more by tweaking the suspension than the engine. The lazy gearbox on both could be improved by switching to a Jag XJ unit or something but only for the complete nutcases. I took my 172 on a 4000 mile jolly round central Europe last year and never once felt uncomfortable. ( I even slept in the car one night having screwed up a hotel booking! )
Mine never felt quick. It was just that things in front got close very quickly and things behind disappeared very quickly.
Another top video. Must say, very impressed with the way you captivate the audience and will be surprised if you don't get at TV slot.
Thanks. That is what I am hoping to do one day. Sadly easier said than done :-)
You mentioned it was a BiTurbo. It is actually a Normally Aspirated version of the previous generations AMG 63s
I know...my bad research and rushing to get the film out 😥 Thanks for the feedback 👍
Hahaha! As I'm partly deaf, I can inform you that when you showed the exhaust and floored it, the subtitles said "Applause".
X¬D
LOL...that is hilarious !
LOL! Put the subs on at 06:45 it says Music! LOL!!!!
Brilliant review. Cheers, subscribed. Look forward to many other reviews.
Hi Duncan. Thanks for the Sub and welcome to the channel :-)
BUY IT BUY IT BUY IT !!!
How could you resist that power, sound and that price ?
It's hard ;-)
Didn't the Clarksonasaurus say, at one time, he couldn't live without that power in his life?
Agreed.
Thank you for the review, you did an awesome job, I am personally looking at a 2005 (12 year old) tastefully customized SLK 55 AMG in the $20K US range with under 49K on the clock and your input just makes the purchase decision that much easier. The car isn't the be all end all in sports cars but I'm not a millionaire so it fits nicely into my budget, I would call it a bargain. My dream car is a Lotus Elise but I simply can't justify the price difference for an Elise of the same vintage of the 05 AMG so it looks like my finances are helping to make the decision as well as my wife who can't drive a stick and she wants to party too. Happy Motoring.
You can easily use this car every day. You can't say that about an Elise, great car but way too hard core for every day ! Good luck with the search :-)
I agree Ped but I'm not really looking for a daily driver I'm looking for a once or twice a month weekend spring, summer, fall fun car so I can transition from my Harley to a sports car as I'm getting up in years. I had an older SLK and was leary of the 2005 because if you're over 5' 5" tall on the older generation the top of the windshield made monitoring traffic lights close up a difficult feat but after driving the newer generation my concerns have been put to rest. I have always admired the styling of the Lotus but the SLK isn't exactly hard on the eyes, the unit I am currently looking at has been customized so it would be unique in it's own right, I agree it does offer quite a bit more luxury than the Elise and I don't feel like I would be settling just going a different route. Thank you for the reply.
As you say, a lot of bang for your buck. Never been a fan of this model, but with that engine under the bonnet, it looks like a lot of fun. Question is what would you buy if you had £30k to play with ?.
MDLambphotos Videos I bought this :) - R8 V10 next.
No, but it certainly made me think :-)
i own this car too, and i must say, jes the test driver is wright. amazing motor, top sound, and with drivers package and sperrdifferenzial super to drive. kw gewindefahrwerk kompletes this car to sportly
I’ve always like Amg cars great review sir Pete
Nice car the SLK 55,was looking at the SLKs before I got the TTs.Wasn’t the 55 thou. That Porsche GT3 is wicked mate 😳😊🍺
It was sold yesterday :-(
Petrol Ped 😰 Someone has got a beautiful car to add to a collection.
The Merc' is a lot of car for 28K, no doubt about that. As an ex Hotrod builde/owner, there's nothing like a tiny car with a big V8, but I digress. I was loving every bit of the review until you cut to the GT3. OMG !! What a beautiful, stunning machine. Lust, lust, lust. But alas, not enough money in the piggy bank. Mrs Geof said if I hadn't spent all my (& her) money on silly, old fashioned cars with big engines I could have had both. That's me put in my place then. Ahh, such is life, too darned old to blame it on mid-life crisis now !! Question Peter, I couldn't see any turbo chargers on the Merc'. Was I not paying attention ?
Great video yet again.
See you down the road.
Cheers,
Geof
Hi Geof. My mistake. I looked up some engine stats and clearly got it wrong :-(
The Porsche was a good looking motor, seemed to produce a bit of a cloud of white smoke when it started up though before the condensation washed it out the way.
Another great video and a car that does have a great mix of performance and practically at an attractive price. Not for me with that auto box though.
It would be epic with a manual !
@@PetrolPed manual merc not so good gearboxes gearchanges are a bit notchy on them
I like you could have it as your only car too.
You certainly could :-)
It always surprises me how much you can fit in the boot. I have used it for track days and my daily commute :)
Well Peter that’s a lot of car for the money as you said that engine is bulletproof if you kept it a couple of years I don’t think it would lose a lot more in value. I think you need to go back and try that yellow peril Porsche 👍
The GT3 sold the day after I shot the video !!
Hi Peter, my wife loves this car. Personally I think the gearbox would wind me up, but who can’t love an amg V8, well apart from a vegan tree hugger lol
Not for tree huggers that's for sure and the gearbox wasn't for me also !
I like the all black Cayman they have in stock better 😋
The Cayman R ?! It VERY nice !
As for the Merc, meh, you can keep it. Anything 911 is my bag. I own four myself.
Two are by Hot Wheels and the other two are Italian made slot cars! X¬)
You may be right about the bang fo buck ratio though. Even a minty MGB RV8 is looking for around the same price as your SLK55 and it's only 3.9L !
I'd love one of those !
Personally, I prefer the clean looks of the early B. But shoehorning a lighter stronger V8 in there is a no brainer!
Interesting that the presenter mentions bi-turbo - the SLK55 is naturally aspirated - definitely no turbos!
My bad...messed up my research...no excuses 😥
I BUY ONE NOW IN 2019 A 2012 MODEL, SOUTH AFRICA
The SLK55 makes the GT3 sound wimpy.
Great video dude. It is a good deal hell yeah sub!
Thanks for the Sub man...welcome to the channel :-)
Vary cool 😃 love the content..
Cheers Josh :-)
Noise all there, but cabin let’s it down. Better AMGs for money Ped. I drive a V8 Lexus ISF , I lust for e63 sw
Nice daily :-)
Only downside is you need a fuel tanker follow you around 😩
Buy it dude 😎
At 7:08 "...sounds awesome...", really? Frankly its the kind of sound eminating from every Dodge Charger, 300C, and virtually every American-made non-supercharged V8 these days...nothing special really.
Mate i'd have to put an after market exhaust on her, unless there's warranty issues. For me though just looks a bit too much 'flat cap and gloves' kind of a car for me. If I could only have one car with a fair bit of cash it would definately be a Porsche, probably a Porsche Singer, even sell that stunning GT3 to get a Singer :)
When I hear the price 28,000 pound, I just though wow!
I know...me too !
Been out on track in an M4 today, and I know autos make life easier - but they do hugely take away from the driving experience ...
James Hibbert the way they are all going with the new auto boxes.
Would prefer no music
Lets be honest how many "Sports Cars" are actually that dynamic? I mean Ferrari's are way softer than you'd imagine, Porsche's are wonderfully usable. So are Mercedes it's not a surprise is it? I mean once you get into the GT3 RS and Pista models okay then you're into something different, but the AMG GT Black Series is also pretty damn mental too.
Bi turbo?
SLK 55 AMGs aren't Bi Turbos.. They are Naturally Aspirated Engine.. Get it right!!
Don’t want to burst the bubble but just saw a SLK 55 65.000 on the clock for 12.500 on AutoTrader.65.000 on the clock. Its 2005 thou 🤔
Flight SGT Danny Boy I don't get your point? Even more bang for buck?
Captainrave don’t really need to spell it out mate 🙄
There will always be other cars out there that are older and with higher mileage for less money. That car is 12 years old !
Petrol Ped That’s very true mate. Also depends on condition too 😉
Flight SGT Danny Boy the R171 55 was a great car, owned one of those too :) - the exhaust sound was brutal!
Hmmmmmmmmmm lush burble.
Gotta love a burble !
I want 1 nuff said ❤️
Thanks. Sub’d
Thanks for the Sub 👍
No, its certainly not the best bang for your buck... but it probably will be given another 10 years
"S" is for Standard, not Sport btw
Whn did the SLK 55 become bi turbo?
It's not a bi-turbo. It's the NA version of the c63 5.5 twin turbo. The SLC43 is the successor to the SLK55 and is a twin turbo v6.
Ever wanted to know what Jim Carry and Hugh Jackman looked like mixed together?...... Here you go lol
LOL 😂
Curious what revs would it be at 70 mph in the top gear?
jabiqq just below 2k.
V nice. I imagine it is thirsty around town or when pushed, but is fuel economy decent on the motorway at 70-80?
jabiqq can get up to 35mpg in eco mode on the motorway. Gets through it when you put your foot down though in sport mode. Generally in the teens. Great to have the option either way.
That`s not bad. I need a v8 in my life ;)
Colour is subjective but I think yellow cars look awful - even on a 911! SLK 55 I like although the R171 facelift model is undeniably better looking. They're not turbocharged though Peter.
My bad...dodgey research !
Better from the front, I prefer the rear of this.
Captainrave R171 front is best
Yeah, R171 facelift was the best out of the SLK
Bi - turbo ??
No it’s sans turbo .
As always great video Pete, but for me the SLK was always a bit of a hairdressers car. Amazing engine in the SLK55 and looks mint for the price, but not for me because of the image sorry :-(
I get where you are coming from :-)
1610kg is hardly lightweight though
First
It looks the driver is scared to drive it probably.
They ruined the front of the car. The previous model looked better. Still a great quality machine. Used to own a 350 and that was quick, in fact far quicker than motoring press said. This must be a blast but might not handle as good as the engine will be heavier
It’s the cheapest facelift
So, really really to much very very.
?!
Petrol Ped I’ve watched and enjoyed quite a few of your vids recently and I’ve noticed you repeatedly say “very”, “really” (often doubled up for no good reason) and “so” to the point where it gets distracting, with over 50 times in this one alone. It’s just as well I’m not playing a drinking game as I’d be unconscious by half way through. I’m not trying to be a dick, I like your overall presentation and want you to do more but with fewer really’s, very’s and so’s. So in conclusion I really really want more very very good vids. ;-)
Ah, so thanks for the really useful feedback. Very much appreciated 😜
That is an atmospheric engine, not biturbo
3 reasons why I wouldn’t buy one. First is I’m not gay secondly I’m not a woman and thirdly I’m too broke to afford it lol
Birmingham racing I disagree, you seem plenty gay. You're confusing not having a woman with not being a woman and of course your broke, being an idiot isn't a high paying field.
James Harper guess your getting confused and not understanding sarcasm
Hahaha! As I'm partly deaf, I can inform you that when you showed the exhaust and floored it, the subtitles said "Applause".
