Doll collecting is trendy rn. People who are trend collectors see things as investments and money making opportunities. A lot of collectors start out that way to justify their hobby to non collectors. Like why are you collecting dolls? Oh you make money? Oh then it’s more acceptable. The bratz makeup trend and Safiya Nygaard video contributed heavily to the Bratz inflation. Like beanie babies, people will realize it’s not worth the time and effort, and their dolls will end up sitting in their storage along with the beanie babies…. Only the true collectors will prevail.

Yeah thats probably why im really scared that when the barbie movie comes out the prices are gonna skyrocket especially since we're already seeing it with the pregnant midge doll already rising more and more in prices and the barbie movie dolls from 2001-2013 are already expensive and hard to cone by unless you have the money to go all out for those dolls. I do hope more people get introduced to the hobby from these videos but it's gonna be a lot harder for new collectors to get into the hobby without dumping hundreds on one doll. This recently happened with novi Stars a couple months ago the prices shot up because of Izzyzz video about it i know they ment no harm but i remember when dolltwt was dragging them through the dirt for that.

Tbh i dont think these videos causing an upscale in pricing is the issue-since even when popular doll collectors make videos on obscure doll lines those said doll lines will upscale in pricing
The issue is more of the misinformsntion-mina presented barbie’s history as the very sugercoated sweet adorable story mattel has presented when in reality mattel stole lily from a small german compsny and ruined the creator of lily’s life because of said theft-she even described lily as a “call girl” when that was a mistranslation

More annoying to me is it's harder to search resale sites without really narrowing results - market flooded with human Barbie logo items or just Barbie pink/ Barbiecore stuff. agreed with this whole video, im actually a newer collector (started collecting in october of 2022). i havent had anyone in the community berate me for being a newer collector, but imo people who sit on piles of old dolls or hoard them in their garage solely for resell value or “investments” should be ostracized and deserve that response from genuine collectors. right now im only purchasing dolls that are playline or on shelves for that exact reason. those people make it so much more frustrating to enjoy the hobby and it’s unfortunately common within many collector communities, not just dolls. dolls are just trendy right now and its okay to have an interest in them because of trends but i would hate for people to just buy these dolls, forget about them in a month or two because theyre not trendy anymore, then go and sell them for triple the retail price. unfortunately thats possible and very well might happen in the next year or so.

  • @amberruxpin

Yes! I've been saying this for years! And what's really annoying is when you tell someone their 1966 stamped 90s or 2000s dolls are newer and they get mad. Then there's family members that don't agree with your collecting and say "Well if you were a true collector, you'd leave all the dolls in the original box, you're just a hoarder"
Outsiders sadly always look at it as something to profit off of. While true collectors know all or most of the history behind each doll, the names and years they were produced because its something they truly enjoy and are genuinely passionate about and are interested in. True collectors don't just go out looking for some simple random RUclips video to teach them about the things they love. Talking to fellow collectors and reading books on such topics is a great way to get alot of accurate information. It's really sad how misunderstood this fun colorful hobby really is 😥

Do not forget that there are different types of collectors. Some are very into the history of the dolls, yes, but some collect them because they are in love with their looks and are not overly interested in knowing every little facts. There are different ways to enjoy an hobby, and different degrees of collectors. And yes, while it is preferable to find informations in books, most toys do not have books written about them, and videos are one of the most accessible ways to find informations about dolls.

I actually enjoyed that video 😂. I also love Mina Le. I do have a problem with such videos when they are antagonistic towards the hobby and spreading tired misinformation.
Mina's video was in defense of fashion dolls and their importance in the fashion industry and society. I appreciate that angle. That topic seemed to be a natural fit for her because dolls do celebrate fashion. I know Modern Gurlz also does doll videos, I loved her Monster High fashion styling video.
I love videos where people who aren't part of the hobby share their thoughts or review doll media. It can be lighthearted and fun as long as it's well-researched. I also like it when creators expose us to a diversity of interests and aren't strictly doll collectors. Maybe they love dolls but are also into video games etc. Negative Legend also collects dolls, it's just that their channel is focused on TV and movies.
I'm a huge fan of video essays so watching content like that about dolls is fun for me. I think we need more than just doll reviews and room tours. There's a whole world is conversation out there to have. These videos can help to improve perceptions of the hobby if done right.
There will always be opportunists. We can't blame content creators and journalists for scalpers doing what scalpers always do.

Those two channels are movie/television review channels so reviewing doll series makes sense for them (doesn’t mean they can’t be criticized for their takes and opinions, but on the topic of “staying in your category and audience,” I think it is ok for them to discuss those avenues).

This same thing happened with gardening but I’d argue it might’ve been more extreme. During the pandemic more and more people got into hobbies and most of them only superficially (I think this now is also an effect of that wave) and for some absurd reason first time plant owners allowed influencers to convince them they needed rare exotic (often poached) plants (that they had no idea how to take care of). So people who didn’t know plants normally cost very little started dropping hundreds on designer plants because it was hot. And a huge number of resellers emerged who were selling half dead plants for a fortune. That bubble burst and obviously proved to be a horrible investment for resellers because they require a lot of space and constant care and knowledge. People genuinely interested in botany and who used gardening as a way to relax just watched in confusion. But the same main consequence was that prices on the smallest things shot up so ridiculously that trend chasers almost priced us out of a hobby.

But do agree that sometimes people think that a barbie is from 1966 but it isn't it just the print mold of their body they using for the doll that's been made in 1966, and i can easily see it on a Barbie face and hairstyle if it's a Barbie from the 60's 70's 80's or 90's.

Her video is by far not as terrible as he make it seems. Sure, there are a few things she got wrong, but it doesn't take away from the pertinance of her video. I've cringed when she called the german doll a Call girl, but other than that it is fairly good.

Negative Legend does kinda collect dolls but their videos on rainbow high suuuuuuckkkk. Every video is 20 mins of them going "this show sucks" and another 20 mins of them and their gf wandering around target. It's boring. Sorry to any NL fans.

i just remember watching this spanish barbie iceberg video a while ago and just getting upset because the person clearly didn't do his research and it had a lot of misinformation , also some youtubers that make those "weird" barbie dolls top ten that keep showing that freaking bootleg pregnant barbie, just i don't really trust non doll collectors to make videos about dolls if they are just going to talk about itt in just surface level

  • @BlakeGildaphish76

i didn't even know that this was a thing. It seems like a foolish waste of time and money.
i was on a "rant fest" last year.
One of the things that triggered me was a Canada Dry ad on Instagram. The ad was specifically marketed to doll and miniature collectors. It was a commercial of a hand putting together a shitty diorama, and doll collectors were in the comments praising it for "representing us".
i was like, "NO! Leave us alone!" "This is NOT for you to pander to us!'
i basically told Canada Dry to mind its soft drink business and fuck off.
i've noticed an influx of doll channels last year, but most of them were annoying as hell.
They definitely seemed like real doll collectors, but you can tell that the Barbie movie was their inspiration and that they just recently became interested in dolls (most likely being trendy).
Honestly, i would not mind a little gate keeping.
i think that is how communities are able to keep their authenticity.
Yes, any and everyone may collect and play with dolls, but it is SUPER annoying to see someone infiltrating a space has been dear to me since childhood when they are clearly into it for a season.

i thought you were going to talk about how they sometimes spew misinformation and don't do their research, i especially feel like the girl's video (i can't remember her name sorry) was very much just a wikipedia reading that added nothing to any conversations, but instead you're literally just Whining.
and negative legend is very much a collector or at Least a fellow fan who just annoys you because his videos are popular thus they make ur intrest less niche.
the last straw would've been mentioning clawdeena9 or that one guy (i don't remember his name either but he wears pretty tshirts) who do doll related news, because since all you gotta do to be Bad is be Popular you may as well have included them.
it's not fair to whine and whine about popular people speaking about dolls, it'd be impossible and irrelevant for them to mention a list of the recent fair prices for every single doll in a brand they happen to mention in a video. Doll collecting is an expensive hobby, you know this.

Besides its not even the non-doll collectors fault, i seen popular doll influencers say their scared to mention obscure doll lines since them just mentioning it can raise up the prices, this whole “oh everything will be better if non doll collectors stayed in their lane!!!” Is just wrong cause no the prices will still get high the non-doll collectors have nothing to do with this

Okay so what about people like me who buy dolls to play with just like I would do if I was 10 years old and had my mum buying them for me? Technically I am collecting because I’m buying dolls but I’m not buying them with the intention to collect but with the intention to play and I have started making content related to unboxing the dolls, showing them off, making role playing videos etc

Hello - For the frisson of collecting to exist there is the opposite end of certain comments that may be made, duality on a scale, but which stems from incomprehension - pure ignorance. The secondary market does thrive as the business side of the hobby. Beware scalpers. The torso mold stamped 66 was discontinued in 2009 with the introduction of the Basics line (you do not have a RARE VINTAGE doll). That is when the second major wave of collectors took off. We are in a class of our own and can but smile at those whose interests lie in other directions (which we in turn would take no pleasure in at all). Happy collecting!

I saw that horrible excuse of a video and all I got from it was a headache she’s all over the place in it, she just wanted the views and it’s apparent from the other videos on her channel, I just picked up a medium storage tote full of Barbie and Ken for $20 and inside of that bin I found quite a few rare and valuable dolls from the 60’s 70’s and 80’s, there’s absolutely no reasoning with those people and so I tend to stay away from them and their items
