Qual was such a monster. He w0ke up after 80 years and already started to counter spells that were made to deal with his Zoltraak. Explains a lot why they had to seal him instead of trying to take him out
I believe that if he somehow survived this encounter, he would have developed a new killing spell. He was really smart as shown how he figured out the weakness of defence magic in just a few seconds.
Qual was so smart too, if he was alive even one more day it would’ve been tragic
He was also starting to dissect and replicate (at a small scale at least) the defense barrier magic, just from watching it being used a few times.
He would have absolutely caught up with (and surpass) the modern "meta" very quickly if left alive.
@@wamaschawama5178 Yeah unlike mid af Frieren, he's ACTUALLY A TALENTED GENIUS (Serie literally outright states that Frieren is below average for her age class, even by elf metrics)
@@skebaba918 Serie is not a reliable source of info about Frieren's abilities, lol. Frieren's ability to analyze and counter spells is unparalleled, as shown especially in the next arc of the series.
This was the moment I knew this series will be exceptional, one minute fight with this level of animation.
I’m a simple man. I see Frieren clips, I click
Was this reuploaded?
I'm only now noticing that Qual was doing the barrage of attacks to poke at the defense capabilities, and as soon as he notices one breaks he tries to overpower the defense.
nice catch
and clone frieren use same special black zoltraak for destroy frierens defense
Which is exactly what Sense Clone did to try and crack shields too. He's using finesse and force to look for cracks.
Fern probably learned a lot from this encounter as well. It's not typical that someone would be able to fire off Zoltraak this quickly.
So this scene is pretty amazing and ACTUALLY show how terrifying Qual really is:
In his first attack he learns that:
1 - Magic Barriers are Really strong against his spell
2 -How they work, by dispersing the magic through the corners,
3- and the weakness of the spell, That it consumes too much mana.
He counters by trying to overwhelm the opponent with a bunch of spells because the control of a high-consumption magic such as shields might not be very maneuverable.
After noticing that he Indeed can break through the shields that Fern put up with sheer brute-force he instantly liberate a high attack to overpower Fern.
This was in the first 2 min since he was unsealed btw.
I wonder if maybe each one of those attacks was slightly different, and he was experimenting to find the shields weakness.
If he’d lived even a year longer Zoltrak would probably shatter the normal defensive mana spell.
And Fern use that same tactic in her mage exam.
I had an interesting realization from one of the later episodes. One of the demons serving under Aura calls the "ordinary offensive magic" version of Zoltraak not the same spell, and that demonkind had conquered Zoltraak ages ago. The spell that Frieren and humankind developed is a modified version of Zoltraak tuned for killing demons. Qual probably noticed this when it was cast against him, and I think that lends a deeper meaning to "Frieren... My spell...". He wasn't just killed with his own spell, but a version that has been twisted against his own original design.
The black Zoltraak he is using is for killing humans, while the white Frieren uses are for demons. Not stated in the mange, but implied.
Great catch! He didn't put up any defense thinking it would be his own spell believing he could easily deflect or redirect it by hijacking the attack but the energy pattern was probably completely different and he just ate the entire thing obliterating him.
So much hidden detail and storytelling in a single scene. This series has peak "show not tell"
But it also tells enough to get the point across.
On first watch, I didn't realize how exhausted Fern was after the battle.
I binged this show. So now that I'm catching up with Demonslayer, I'm almost getting annoyed at how much they talk during fights... Frieren spoiled me a bit.
SirSayakaMikiThe3rd Demon slayer has a lot of subtle details to, if you’re paying attention
Frieren simply says "Protect me" and leaves Fern to it while she prepares her spell. Complete confidence in Ferns abilities and her own teaching, Fern was lucky to end up with Frieren.
That's why I love Frieren and Fern, they are the best. How I miss Frieren's chapters every week. 😢
Don't worry because a new chapter will come out on this Wednesday.
Chapter 128 is coming? I'm caught up till 127, so I'm gonna let a bunch come out for now
Frieren casually punching through the entire cliffside with Zoltraak.
The fact that Himmel's party was capable of both survive an onslaught of instant-death spells AND seal Qual is unbelievable, they were literally built different 😂
Top tier ost - Evan Call's score elevates this scene and the whole show to the next level.
"So you can fly."
"And you can die."
"Wha-"
Honestly my favourite moment because Frieren later explains that flying is like, a 40 year ago thing. Before only monsters and demons did it. So to Qual it really was interesting to see an elf fly. It so amazing to see him analyse magic so fast and realise new developments
Frieren and Fern are my number 1 favourite duo in this anime series
Now that I think about it, Fern fighting style is quite similar. She often fires lots and lots of spells in quick succession, trying to overwhelm whoever she is fighting by sheer amount. Whenever she got inspired by this fight, I can't tell. But if anything, it tells you just how strong Qual really is and how he would evolve if he was not killed right there.
She follows it up with much bigger atttacks once defenses start collapsing. To me it looks like she formed her style from this fight.
Glad to see some early moments of the anime to satisfy my post-Frieren mood. But also a really great reminder of how far Frieren and Fern have come in their journey up to the mage examinations.
Frieren was totally capable of being the one shielding his attacks she just wanted to be one killing him out of spite
She easily could've done both, it was boot camp for Fern xD.
@@simon2493 Because fern hadn't been doing her homework, too. XD
Getting revenge on a boss that gave you grief in the early part of the game
@@Future_Vantasis reminded of the first episode of Shangri-la Frontier... now that was payback, especially the way he explained it.
@@simon2493nah. She said herself that she’s slower with Zoltrak because it’s relatively new for her. I’m not saying she couldn’t have beaten him, but 1v1 it’d have been a lot harder.
Can we just take a minute to appreciate that Qual would have probably beaten Fern if Frieren wasn’t there
He absolutely would have beaten her, and it’d be a worst case scenario even. She took her fighting style from this guy but instead he’d learn from her. Even without Frieren there for exposition he’d understand that somebody had made a defensive spell that could block Zoltrak but that wasn’t infallible. He’d have grasped the principles, overwhelmed her (that was working), and then he’d have gotten to work. Zoltrak is his baby and we know Demons don’t stop refining their magic. He’d teach himself the defensive magic out of necessity like other demons have, but also work on deconstructing it. Next time he showed up the wizard using ordinary offensive magic would probably see their shields dissolve in just a few hits. And within a very short amount of time anybody who experience Zoltrak would liken it to ordinary magic only in the same way that a musket ball might be compared to armor piercing ammo.
And ever since then, Fern read that history grimoire everyday and night. 😂
Everything is perfect, but the music... It is astonishing
Heh
Love this series 🎉🎉🎉🎉
This man made possibly the killingest spell in all magic history. And while a basic spell today, it’s still a spell every mage learns for a reason.
Judging how fast he was learning how the defensive magic worked, he would have probably refined it to the point humans no longer understood it in a year tops. It’d just shatter shields again.
This scene alone is better written then demon slayer and jjk
I love Frieren but come on don't hurt JJK and DS fans like that
Love jjk i watched their all their fights more than 5 times but tje writing is so lazy and bsd sometimes @@wamaschawama5178
I like all three shows for very different reasons. Pears, cherries, and bananas.
@@wamaschawama5178 yah I don't get why people need to put other anime down. I love demon slayer because the action is insane. Sometimes, you just want to be hyped even with the bad writing.
Fern decided to take a lesson from Qual it seems, and use the same tactics against that chick she fought in the exam.
"Miss Frieren, was that necessary?"
"I always do demons dirty. In front of their moms, if I can."
Now when you think about Friren could have taken him head on easily. The only reason why she had to seal him before was because there was no defence against Zoltrak developed.
Not just that, Zoltraak it's a fast spell, very fast compared with classics spells like judradjim and vollzanbel, to add that she wasn't involved in fighting for five centuries (El Dorado arc explains why). Qual was a menace and a genius of the Demon kind olders demons respect him for what he did.
Frieren and Fren would give you the same fear if a M1 abram and bardley show up but able to fly and more mobile
Only looking back to I notice the difference in appearance (color) of the modified Zoltraak compared to Qual’s.
0:39 "She flies now? She flies now".
The animation of this show is phenomenal.
Peak animation
Frieren said *_"Nah, we win"_* when casting Zoltraak
No, she said Zoltraak.
@@andyjo7838its a joke lol

Its just so peak
Magic must defeat magic.
3 comentario 🎉❤
I wonder what the difference is between the white version of Zoltrack vs. the black version. It's probably just aesthetics to signify a good caster vs an evil one for the anime viewers.. The evil clone of Ferien also uses the black version later.
The black version is the original one designed against humans, the white one was the modified version humanity came up with for the demons
I love that Frieren completely trusted Fern to protect them both, total confidence.
When this guy copied the new defensive spell I immediately switched into panic mode. The worst type of enemy is a smart one and if they let him survive or escape the encounter they would _so_ regret it later.
Behold: no one can overcome the ultimate defensive power of... THE HEXAGON!!
Great teamwork, Frieren and Fern! 🤝💥
i NEED to watch this show
Dude thought he was a main antagonist
He would’ve been if he’d been woken up by someone else.
I just realized Zoltraak that kills human is black and one for demons is white. Freiren used the black Zoltraak against her clone, she literary mastered the original one
I'd pick these two in my guild anytime. 💯🎉
Ordinary offensive magic.
All you need is Magic Missile and Shield
damn, this was episode 3?!
O the humiliation of getting destroyed by your own spell. Frieren/Flamme lived for the sake of destroying the very essence of demon kind.
Shield vs magic missile

Qual is how Fern learns to spam Zoltraak to overwhelm defense magic 🗣️
Frieren and Fern just casually saving the entire region from an era of darkness and despair.

Frieren: “Hollow Purple”
FFFRIIEEREENNN LOVEE YOOUU AND FERN TOOO
The music in this series I swear to the demon lord
“This guys a genius!”
No. He has a sledgehammer and is hitting things, figuring if brute force isn’t working you aren’t using enough.
A genius would’ve been able to use the defensive magic to block his own spell being cast at him.
She shot a mega large demon killing variant at him less than 120 seconds after he learned a defense was even possible.
He correctly identified a flaw in the defense: other casters who learned the new system acknowledged that spamming is one if the best ways to counter ordinary defensive magic. Even moreso using physical attacks. This wasn’t just “I’ll spam” he figured out at a glance principles wizards get taught in magic school.
Qual then spammed, yes, and started breaking through the shields with the SPELL IT SPEFICALLY IS OPTIMIZED TO DEFEND AGAINST. Even if we assume he wasn’t trying variants in the fight, he wasn’t just hammering, he was probing.
Fern straight up uses his fighting style after this. That’s not coincidence.
@@kagato23 Hit with hammer

See big hammer coming.
Welp, I’m dead.
A genius would’ve been able to tell how the shields are made at a glance, not just that they exist. A smart person would’ve already known how to counter his own spell before he got trapped.
@@nathanielkidd2840 you have a very high standard. Developing a defense against something nobody has ever defended against before and nobody else can cast isn’t a lack of genius, it’s a lack of precognition. Being able to create a duplicate seconds after seeing it is one thing, and that’s an impressive thing. Being able to create one as an intuitive reaction to a fast spell is the magical equivalent of muscle memory. He simply didn’t have time.
Epic moment❤🧝🏼♀️✨️

I’ve could have sworn that CrunchyRoll already published this video about a month or two ago.
I thought the same and checked my saved vids. I had saved the previous version from October and it’s exactly the same clip!
@@Shichitenhakki78 Man, I’m glad I’m not the only one to remember this video.
We also know either Frieren couldn't fly or she didn't fly 80 years ago.
Frieren explains in a later episode that flying is a type of demon magic that humanity only learned to copy relatively recently. Must have been after Qual was sealed.
Flight magic is relatively new, about 40 years. Prior to that, the sky was the territory of demons and monsters.
They mentioned that when the bird picked up a carriage. They don't actually know how flight magic works, so they have limited use of it.
Frieren and Fern best partners ever 😊
I love Frieren Beyond Journey's End. It's such a great fantasy elf anime series.
Anyone know the name of the OST? Been trying to find it on the album
I believe it's simply called "Zoltraak"
@@thegreatgario3478 I found it once the album came out but I appreciate you helping out
I don’t think that this was a terrible series, but it was to slowly paced for me to watch. I just skipped my way through to watch the parts that actually cost money to make.
Crunchyroll's channel has already uploaded this same clip 5 months ago (titled "Frieren and Fern team up"). I don't understand why there's two now?
