I’m a visual learner so your inserted photo examples help a lot (like tall letters, etc). Thank you!

Really liked this video. Thank you. It aligns well with the OERA course I'm taking; based off SoR. Do you have spelling activities that follow a scope and seq?

Hi Susan, thank you so much for all your amazing resources, I love using them in my Year 2 Classroom. I’m just wondering if you will come out with spelling activities for year 2 that focus on alternative spellings, less common spelling patterns, suffixes and prefixes. Also, would you consider creating handwriting sheets for cursive writing? Thank you!

Love your videos! When teaching handwriting in K, should order matter? As we teach sounds, should they learn the formation of those letters in tandem, or grouped more as you mentioned in this video? In your opinion, should we teach lower and upper together or upper first and then lower?

Thank you. I want to do a quick assessment at the beginning of the year ( first week) to see what my students know. I would use short vowel sentences, etc. I was concerned about inventive spelling, so thank you for clarifying it's place. Do you think golf pencils are helpful? So many students struggle with holding a pencil properly.

Thank you Susan! I look forward to Sunday Spotlights! I use all of these strategies but I notice that some of kindergarteners struggle to apply what they’ve learned during writer’s workshop and will often draw but will not write without me next to them encouraging them. Do you have any recommendations on how to get kids to be more independent?

It's great that they are doing an illustration because that tells us the problem isn't idea generation! Now we need to get them to take that idea they've drawn and write about it! Writing in kindergarten is really difficult and *often* the reason students won't write is because they don't have the tools just yet, or they perceive it to be too difficult to take those next steps and apply their letter-sound knowledge. If you can determine they know enough of their letters/sounds and how to form them, then I would start by having them label the illustration and then see if they can make a simple sentence using the labeled picture. This way they can offload some of the work of spelling that labeled word since they've done it once and can copy it. Then when writing, I have my kindergarteners say the sentence aloud, count the words in the sentence, and draw lines for them to write a word on each line. This often helps them remember what they wanted to write. And I encourage them to use inventive spelling for the word parts they don't know just yet!

    Hi
I have a question regarding spelling. Does spelling instruction begin at K level? If it does do you have any TPT activities ❤?
