I think it's open to your interpretation and imagination, if you have a purist mentality some artistic quality will be limited. One of the qualties is the dynamically changing environment, like a haunted house that changes from new to old but with much more scope for variety. You must not freeform too much, explore some horror themes that have strangeness and focus on each quality but always keep the atmosphere of being lost, mystery, trapped, isolated, fear and despair, if not it might end up like many sequals when the purists lose interest.
