Day 12, 22.5 Miles
The night in the converted hay barn was almost too comfortable to break its gravitational pull. A slow morning filled with breakfast, coffee, and conversation had us leaving later than planned, well worth it.
A quick resupply at a gas station, a heartfelt thank you to Mary and a hug later, we were back to stepping.
We had a goal in mind about 22~ miles away, it was 10:30am~ and we had no time split to arrive. It felt great to just cruise without a hard time again, and we bounced along the track.
The rain threatened a little bit, but ultimately held off. The trail was soggy and slick from the heavy rain earlier, and the miles were slower than anticipated. Oh well, all we needed to do was step.
Many interesting creek names such as Troublesome and Difficult Creek were ahead, and we theorized about what lay in store. Ultimately, another creek, another mile, the only difficulty came from our lethargy that clung to us from the comfort of Mary’s Barn.
Today was the first day that the green of the southeast truly began to pop. Many of the days prior had been quite chilly, and while the woods had begun their entrance into summer, they still hadn’t had the nourishment of “warm” rain to saturate their colors. Now they did, and the green tunnels were all sorts of vibrant.
Up at Peters Mountain TH we played a game of leapfrog with Professor and Horsepower. After a quick privy break we thought the boys were ahead, and cranked out a pace to try and see if we could catch them before camp.
The miles down into Rock Creek were some of the most unique yet. Walking in a creek bed surrounded by rock, it felt very “canyon like” for being on the eastern side of the country, a really cool contrast of feeling.
Into the miles along the creek, and the pace increased, with puzzlement that we had not yet caught up to the boys.
Arriving into our meet spot of Great Meadows Camp, there was no one around… puzzling.
It looked like it was going to rain, so we set up the tent anyway, and soon after, Professor rolled in, followed a tad bit after by Horsepower.
Horsepower has a knack for fording creeks, well more accurately rivers, at the extremely wrong time, and he had gotten turned around. We believe Professor had to see a man about some Vasoline and some chafe.
Camp early, lush miles, soggy feet, extra candy in the pack, and another round of the movie name game, was a perfect way to wrap up the day.
Great episode!
Super scenic…
That section where the trail followed the bed of the creek looked like it could be challenging during a wetter Spring than you all experienced. Nice scenery in this segment.
Enjoying your videos - thru hiking the Sheltowee in November. Would you mind sharing the contact info for Mary? If possible would like to pay for 2 hikers to stay there. Would be great if we could contact here. Happy Trails 🥾✌️
