  • In part 2 I finish the breakdown of the Spurs P&R defense. I dive into the late switch and how the Rockets attacked the late switch, what the off-ball defenders do, and how the Spurs defend dribble handoffs. Poppovich does a really good job proving the drop coverage still has a place in the NBA. Kawhi, Aldridge, offense.

On the subject of how Rockets figuring out the Spurs' late switches by basically reset after they get the mismatch and attack it... I don't think Pop cares really. The entire idea of Spurs defense is to kill your ball movement and force your stars to iso. When their strategy actually works, you're going to have to beat them with iso almost exclusively. If you can do that for 4 games in a 7 game series, then they'll live with that and admit defeat.
Don't forget though, when talking about iso scoring, Kawhi is a serious beast himself. They have no problem trading buckets with you and see who misses more of that mid range shot...

I think last season the Rockets already attacked the late switch like that. If I remember correctly the Spurs counter was like that:
The Big switched on the guard forces a drive, another defender comes over to help against the drive, and, when the opposing guard passes, the Spurs scramble and hope for a contest, a mistake, or that they can scramble long enough that the shot clock runs out.

I think there's one of the reasons they invested so much in guards lately. Their guards couldn't defend in ISO situations (Parker, Mills and that grandpa juice). Now, they have Murray, White and Brandon Paul who can really be a problem to the attacker. Just imagine a starting lineup of Murray, Green, Kawhi, Gay, Aldridge and a bench with White, Paul, Kyle, Bertans and Joffrey... That would be a nightmare for any team. Not forgetting Bryn tho, he's getting better at defense, and his scoring hability will be valuable in the near future.

Well if they simply wanted the other teams to ISO, they would straight up switch everything. If the Rockets do a good job attacking the late switch by getting a big on one of their star guards, that could be trouble for the Spurs. Paul and Harden are amazing at attacking switches (especially Harden)

Great vids. You just showed me how exactly the NBA teams do on-ball and off-ball offense and defense. Learned a lot from them. Keep up dude!

The aggresive dribble handoff defense is vulnerable to a screen before the handoff, in a pistol or even loop type offense (what the Warriors did for Curry in the 2015 Finals), since the guy that defends the perimeter player is either slowed down by the screen before the handoff, or in a bad position if he switches. Communication is very important in that case.

From my experience I assume that the Spurs would switch that.

I love the in game adjustment you pointed out. I love the pointing out of the in game adjustment. Good job!
Have you spotted other strategies teams have successfully used against this D?

Thanks. Vs the late switch being patient and exploiting the mismatch is the best one, though it's hard for the guard to diagnose in real time.Against this pick and roll D a lot of it is having a good guard to make good decisions and hit those short mid range shots. Also coaches can run good dribble handoff plays with action beforehand. Also it's crucial for the big to roll hard, even if he doesn't set a legit screen.

Part 2 was the final part for the Spurs pick and roll D, but I'm always open to making different pick and roll videos in general if I see something interesting.
