It's so chilling to think that these weren't just lyrics thought up by some band, they used an actual dying soldier's letter to his loved one as lyrics. It makes the whole thing so much more real and so much more heartbreaking.
That was a great breakdown of the song. "Black Letters" is up on my favorites from The Dreadnoughts and there in my favorites as a whole. Every song in the Foreign Skies album tells a story and I love it.
I think both verses are about the same man, because even though it mentions Alberta, it also talks how the cradle his mother rocked him in was of an Alberta grain, meaning wood from Alberta, so he could still have been from Montreal
I went back and forth on this too, because you can can easily hear the lyrics as “of a tall Alberta grain” and “of the tall Alberta grain.” Either as wood grain of a tall Alberta tree, or the tall grains of a field of wheat. Paints two different yet equally heartbreaking pictures
I came to this channel because of Tally Hall, but I'm quite interested in seeing stuff about all these random topics. Your videos are super interesting
Great vid, although personally not a fan of the Dreadnaughts I do appreciate the lyricism and messages they put into their music. Offtopic but have you heard the album Deadhorse by Dirt Poor Robins it's pretty wild it feels more like a movie than an album and it blows me away.
Your videos remind me a lot of EmpLemon's. High-quality new-age RUclips documentaries about random subjects that are personally interesting to the creator. I take it he's a major inspiration for you?

Love to see this underappreciated album of an underappreciated band getting some recognition! Also a really well put together video.
Thank you!

First 5 seconds I thought you were another youtuber dweeb, but you have some sense and empathy which is rare these days, imma give you like.
