  • Headphones are important for properly hearing if the audio turned out in your video, especially when outside on location. Which headphones are best for traveling or remote use when filming videos? Here are headphones I have compared. Hands down, "over ear" headphones are best for monitoring and checking video you just recorded. In-ear headphones just don't cut it, even noise-canceling in-ear headphones. Nothing beats over-ear headphones. I know there are hundreds of other choices out there... these are just ones I have personally tested. Enjoy and subscribe for more tips, tricks, giveaways and reviews.
    The ones I use the most- Senal SMH-1000 Professional Field and Studio Monitor Headphones $75 www.bhphotovid...

    I have the Sony professional MDR 7506. I've worked in radio for over 20 years. I'm pretty sure I've had these for over 20 years. They've held up really well. I've replaced ear pads a few times. They're only really used for work. Love them!

    I used to have these senheisers, or maybe a similar model on early 2000's back when i was djing.. Real workhorse, they last me around 5 years of nightclub abuse...
    I can confirm, you are so,so, right about the sound been complete flat... you brought some nice memories back. My dad had actually bought them for me back then to help me with my dream job, been a dj :)
    thank you for that Markus.. :)

    I have learned so much from your different series, especially on microphones and audio recording. I have been learning about In Ear Monitors recently as they tend to be used for monitoring musicians while they play an instrument during a live performance. I am interested in being able to monitoring myself while recording, and being active so I won't have to worry about them falling off or getting in the way. Apart from them not being entirely invisible, have you considered using them or do you have any suggestions about how to choose one? Thanks a bunch!

    Nice.. was looking at picking up headphones since I'm getting more in to audio/video. Never heard of Senal (as you predicted), but I think I'll be picking up a pair soon!
    Thanks for the video. :)

    I have the ATH-M40’s Which are a little flatter than the 50’s in my opinion and I love it. They were gifted to me when I got into video production by my mom. She has good taste!

      Yes I have a pair of those, they sound great, but I personally like the softer warmer fuller sound of the Senal SMH-500. That's just me though.

    I use ear-protection and have the line in connected to the camera audio out. But then I film Air-shows so some kind of ear protection is necessary. But another advantage of ear protection is that professional grade is designed to be worn for an entire shift.

    They are a little large for taking around with you though but I LOVE them.

    You skipped the custom iems. There are some very nice studio focused iems for musicians that do a good job of recreating the actual sound. I have a old sony mdfr-7506 and the closed backs kill the background noise but a nice set of iems will likely outperform them and you can put them in your pocket. They are a bit of a fad now but etymotics used to makes a proper custom set for people based on a mold you could get taken at an audiologist clinic in whatever city you happened to be in. Like getting fitted for hearing aids.

    I've had that cheap Sony MDR-ZX110 set for about 5 years. There is (was?) a whole series of those out at the same time and with very similar ZX-#### model numbers so it was confusing to know what you were getting. I think most were designed for smartphones, based on the 4 contact plugs and the tiny tiny microphone switch part way down the cord. I've come to despise anything with TRRS plugs. Mics or headphones. They are just trouble coming for a recording scenario.
    BUT one thing about those ZX series phones is they fold up with the cups rotated 90 degrees so they lay flat in line with the headband. Super compact for bag space. They are at least "OK" for monitoring that you're not getting intermittent drop outs or interference noises. Camera audio level bars won't alert you to that.

    I've got the Audiotechnica, but I find them uncomfortable, I got my wife Sennheiser gsp 300 for zoom meetings tried them out and immediately ordered myself the gsp 301 for myself. I think they have a good flat sound, and I can wear them all day comfortably.

    I always have a set of earbuds in my camera bag. Easy to carry, and they'll let you know if the sound you're recording is getting into the camera. Not great for checking for noise and that sort of thing, but easy to pack. For mixing and other critical work, I use Sony MDR-7506, which are still under $100. Have thought about getting a set of Sennheiser HD280PRO for the sound isolation on location. Still around $100. As you say, you really want a flat sound when recording or mixing, without boosted bass or muffled sound.

    • @Luke-vg7ut
      @Luke-vg7ut 2 года назад

      Why would the Sennheiser HD280PRO have better isolation than the MDR-7506?

    • @MarkusPix
      @MarkusPix  2 года назад

      Yes I have a pair of those. The highs are way too trebly bright for me and the earcups are too small and hurt. They also sound a bit more distant than the Sony 7506 professional and the earcups comfortably go around the whole ear with those. I still personally like the softer warmer sound (and physical feel) of the Senal SMH-500. That's just me though.

No big deal at all. Just weird that the thumbnail doesn't appear there as it almost always does.
