The biggest question we are asked is what is the difference between a Non Profit and a Charity? As they begin the registration process both the Not For Profit and Charitable incorporations begin as Non Profit, however the charitable status is only available to those corporations where the object or purpose clauses are deemed to be a charitable organization. The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) ultimately determines whether a new corporation is considered charitable and if so, the corporation is able to obtain a charitable tax number.
What is a Non Profit?
A non profit is to benefit the community, but its focus is not on obtaining donations to support those endeavours.
Common examples of Not For Profit objects are:
-Associations - professional, trade, ratepayers, residents, merchants
-Athletic, Hobby and Sports Organizations - golf, curling, health club, skating
-Service clubs - Elks Canada, Kinsmen, Lions
-Arts - dance, music literary, photography, theatre
-Community - Association, Centre, Club
What is a Charitable Organization?
A charity is an organization where the objectives of the corporation is to support the community and have the ability to take in donations and provide tax receipts to those who provide financial contribution. The charity must spend a minimum amount through its own charitable activities or as gifts made to qualified donees.
Examples of a Charitable Organization purposes are:
-Relief from poverty
-International development - health, drinking water, agriculture, disaster relief
-Advancement of Religion
-Advancement of Education
-Private Foundations
What information is required to get started?
Name of Corporation
Address of Corporation (a home address can be used)
Minimum of 3 directors (legal names, addresses and signatures required)
Objects for the corporation ( There are pre approved objects provided in Ontario that you may select from, or you can provide your own wording. The Federal incorporation requires your own wording.)

Oh does it means ,,, you"ll have to register first for non profit before registering for charitable .right.
HI Kristine, thank you for your question. The incorporation can be completed as a charitable organization however the full status of a charity does not take affect until the secondary part is completed where you file the incorporation and application for charitable status with CRA charitable division. I am planning to start a NonProfit organization. Right now, I'm on my own. In your video, you mentioned needing the addresses of 3 directors. What if I'm the sole director?
Hi Laura, thank you for your inquiry. To set up a Not For Profit, you have to include 3 individuals. We cannot complete the documentation with just one person like we can for a profit business.

If I do choose to incorporate my NFP, can I choose whether to do so federally or provincial?
Also, do I need to maintain 3 directors, or only needed to start the corporation?
Yes, you can complete either an Ontario or Federal NFP incorporation. At all times you are required to have a minimum of 3 directors for either jurisdiction.
Are you able to start a kickstarter to raise money to open a non profit group?
Hi Ryan, I am not sure how to answer this one. If the corporation is not yet registered, it may not be in the best interest of the community to try and get funding for the incorporation itself.
Can nonprofits claim 100% of Input tax paid?
Can you start NGO, and then convert it into for profit down the line ?
Its not recommended to do that as these two businesses are viewed differently. We recommend asking your accounting or tax professional this question.

This may not quite be related yet I'm at a loss in how to deal with a situation with a non profit organization. I have had a really bad experience with an organization that doesn't do anything that it claims to do online. Is there a place to go to to file a complaint?

According to the CRA, no entity such as a Not For Profit, or Charity needs to register.

I have a funny feeling if i want my np to be legit i have to pay a lot of money which wasn't explained in this video. I'm not talking crud or anything i'm just. I was homeless for a sum odd number of years and i watched people wither away and die. The street getting covered in litter. Used sharps left out uncapped for young children to play with. Now that i'm an adult and i have a place to live and just lost me job i have been trying to give back to my community and this is where i started. But i need help and i'm the only person doing this. i have no money or support, what do i do?
Hi Dave, your story is very touching and I hope you are able to fulfill this dream of helping others who are out on the streets. For a NFP, you need a minimum of 3 directors to complete the incorporation. Hopefully, you can find 2 others to join you who are as passionate about helping and get some startup costs going through your community.
