Interesting comparison. I think I liked the sound of the 700 better, which surprised me.
I was surprised by it when I listened to the playback too, good stuff, cheers!
Me too
Jason, thank you very much.. I've been looking for a comparison of the 700 and 800 series for a long time.
Excellent! You're welcome. So glad to it helped, cheers!
I went to the local store for strings a few years ago and came home with a FS700S just like yours. I love it. They had 2 and the sound jumped out of the one I bought, and it was nice and sparkly. The 2nd one was a total dud and the neck was not finished anything like mine and had an open-poor feel. It was surprising in the quality difference.
Haha! I believe it. It's a charmer for sure. Bummer about the quality difference but I'm glad you got a good one. Cheers!
Acccording to yamaha, the scalloped bracing increases the bass response. To my ear, this seems to be true. It seems to have a more pronounced low end. Also sounds to me like the fs800 has a bit more sustain. To me I prefer the fs800. I own a fg800m and I love it.
Well said, thanks. I bet the FG800M is a nice one, cheers!
The 800 sounds thinner ….makes sense given the body change. Still pretty nice
I found it interesting that from the player's position the 800 sounded more robust but out front through the mic the 700 did. I've never been interested in sound ports, but I can see the allure if you're mainly on the couch. Anyway, yes, the 800 is a real nice guitar, cheers.
I believe the 800 switched to forward shifted scalloped x bracing. And the 700 has a gloss neck as apposed to the 800 having a satin finished neck.. they both sound good. I have an fg 800 and have owned many different guitars from the fg series which has been around since 1966 I believe.
Thanks, adding the bracing to my list of differences. This 700 doesn't seem to have a gloss neck to me. It's dull and feels satin-y. Great line of guitars all around. Cheers!
Hi, I'm just curious about the tuning stability of the FS800, and whether the frets stick out.
The tuners are reliable. Of course, technically, you could get a dud, but these are very reliably produced guitars. The fretboard is bound so there's probably no fret sprout to worry about with this model. This model is a good bet overall, to say the least. I have confidence in recommending it, cheers!
Wow, yeah they both sounds great, but I like that FS800 best.
There's something about it for me as well, cheers!
I like this guy, he seems very nerdy, but yet, kinda cool too !
🤣 🙏
the thinner sound of the FS800 masks the unbalanced sound of the FS700s
Interesting. I think you nailed it with the 700s, unbalanced. That's the word I was looking for. If it had the bottom to match the rest it would be a killer. Cheers!
FG700S vs FS700S what is difference ?
FGs are a full size dreadnaught body. FS is a smaller OM-ish sized body.
You forgot one thing. the 800 has scalab brazing
Yes! Thanks for the reminder, cheers
The FG700S was one of my first guitars when I was about 13, still one of my favorites I've ever played and definitely my favorite I've ever owned for playing at home.
The problem comes when performing. No electronics. Ah, what to do? I had an old Epiphone for a while that the strings buzzed with certain notes. Then I got a screaming deal on an almost new Taylor, supposed to be really good guitars right? Well maybe but this one must be a lower end model, sounds tinny to me. It's a smaller, more compact model and I think that's why I don't like the sound. I've realized that for the type of music I like to play and my personal preference, I need a dreadnought. So I'm planning to trade in the Taylor.
Currently debating between Martin DRS1 and one of the variations of Yamaha's FGX800 guitars. Martin DRS1 pros: no cutaway (just my personal preference) and I've always wanted a Martin. Yamaha FGX800 pros, price and it's about as close as I can get to my favorite guitar ever owned (the FG700) with electronics.
Thanks for sharing your story, love it. In addition to your plan, you may like to give a Yamaha LL6 a try, although it'll have a 1 3/4" nut. But you can't go wrong with the 800 series. My two cents: At that price point, I personally look toward Yamaha over Martin, but that's just me. I'd also consider finding the right guitar you love and having someone install a K&K mini into it. I prefer no onboard electronics myself and use the amp or a DI box for EQ. I also haven't seen the FGX800 without a cutaway but that's my preference as well if you can get one. Good luck with it, cheers!
@@jasonvalcourt Oooh I hadn't looked at the L series. You may have swayed me that direction. No cutaway and a passive pickup (I get annoyed with dead batteries that you have to remove strings to change). The cheapest solid top Martin dreadnought with electronics is about $700, the LL6 is just shy of $600. I found a youtube video comparison of the FG830 compared to the LL6M and they sound almost identical.
Nice! Hope it comes together. I think it'll be awesome. Exciting stuff!
@@jasonvalcourt What are your thoughts on ordering online? I'm inclined to think a guitar is something a guy's gotta touch, feel, and play before he buys. But none of the local music shops have any L-series. (Lots of FGs and FGXs though). Yamaha is a pretty reputable manufacturer and I'm buying new, not used, so maybe it'd be okay?
Overall, I feel ok about buying online - if I know what I want already. Of course, the source matters (probably not through amazon) and you have to do a lot of research if you're not dealing with a reputable store. If you haven't already, I think it'd be worth giving Sweetwater a try. I've only heard good things about their customer service and return policies and shopping new is right up their alley. They also have a used marketplace, but I'd get on the phone with a rep and see what they have. Good luck!
To my ears the 700 sounds like there"s a towel inside compared to the 800.
Interesting. Yes, totally different tones, the 700 has more of a focused sound to me and a different flavor, while the 800 was more open and boomy...at least from the players side that's my experience.
The 700 sounds better
Nice, I was surprised how nice it sounded in the recording, cheers!
