I have a thing for acoustic guitars, fingerstyle guitar playing & songwriting.
I get into other things as well, sometimes goofy to complement the serious and sharing the projects I want to document.

What is the fretboard radius?
This video was very helpful, as i was thinking about switching my plastic nut and saddle for a bone nut on my FG800 Yamaha. I made all the adjustments on electric guitars successfully.I should be able to handle this.Thank you posting this.
Bought one second hand, put a Fender sound hole pickup with vol/tone pots , upgraded the tuners and use it on stage. Does the job and is great looking (it looks the part for what we do) ….Acoustically it’s a little toyish sounding though, plugged straight into the mixer through a DI box it sounds great. My other complaint (that’s why I use it for gigs but not so much elsewhere) it’s a short scale (23.75 vs 24.75) with a pretty narrow neck and this makes it a little cramped for finger picking….dont know if yours does this but mine eats wounded G strings at every fret up to the 7th or 8th fret. 🤷🏼♂️
I love seeing ppl play a Yairi.
same here, tx!
Greetings, I have the FG830c new. Experienced player, I'm going bone nut, saddle and pins. Just a little brighter and a touch more sustain but mainly no tuning issues as I'm semi pro and have had things not quite right in the middle of a gig. For a laminated guitar, campfire player it's not necessary.
Excellent, glad to hear the Yamaha serves you so well, great guitars!
What do you use on your fingers, when you playing guitar?
Banjo picks. Plastic thumb pick(Dunlop) and two stainless steel picks (also Dunlop .020mm) - on the first and second finger.
Love the video. I bought a used FGX800C last year. After watching your video, I discovered that I too got to enjoy peeling the protective layer that was still on the pick guard. NICE! Interested to know the brand of polish and linseed oil you used. Thanks.
Thanks! Nice choice of a guitar. Ha! It's the little things right? The polish is from Stew Mac. I believe it is called Clean + Shine. The linseed oil is a food grade Flax Oil made by Spectrum that I commandeered from the kitchen cupboard, cheers!
Thanks for taking ample time for a good sound comparison, I agree with most of the other comments, and wondering are they both equally playable?
Yes they definitely are, but they are very different flavors of an experience to play. And honestly, I play the Stella as much as any other guitar I have when I'm at home practicing etc, except when rehearsing for a gig. The Stella has quite a chunky neck which is not for everyone and takes getting used to. I really like it though, and have been surprised in the last few years to find I get along with that profile. The M36 has a modern Martin neck profile, modern frets which feel different and of course the finish is slick and new. Oh, and they smell very different...I know you know what I mean, cheers!
I love mahogany guitars, and after hearing a lot about this Alvarez Yairi, I was anxious to hear your video. BEAUTIFUL GUITAR!!
Much appreciated!
Quiero saber la diferencia, pero no entiendo inglés
Espero que esto se traduzca bien. Hay otras pequeñas diferencias: Profundidad del cuerpo de la guitarra No tan pesado Perfil de cuello más delgado de guitar
Theres one a available in my area for 75usd with hard case. Tempted. Ty for the demo
Great price. Not for everybody but a nice little guitar, much appreciated!
What is the body binding a plastic or wood?
Wood. Mahogany
I love the sound of that Yahama. That's sure a lot of guitar for the price! Of course you really make it sound fantastic. I have a lot of guitars....including a '63 Martin D-28 (purchased new by my Dad), a Martin 000-16....and a Yahama FS-TA (I just checked the string spacing at the bridge is exactly 2") and the Yahama has a beautiful tone! Thanks for the video.
Excellent collection! How great to have your dad's guitar, fantastic. Cheers!
I have the Alvarez Regent 5225 with D'Addario lights definitely is not boxy sound but that one's a dreadnought I think the scalloped bracing on the Yamaha makes the difference on your guitars even though they're the same size the dreadnoughts are so big so I'm in the market for the orchestra size with the fs800 on my mind
Nice, we evidently both enjoy Alvarez and Yamahas. The FS is a really nice size to have if you're looking smaller than a dread. In another price tier, I still have a FS5 that I played last year on my mind but I'm just dreaming at this time, cheers!
@jasonvalcourt I'm a new subscriber and love the content
The D'Addario lights are the way to go especially if the action is high you can just tweak the truss rod like you did and the strings will sit in the nut and the bridge better than the thicker strings
I played mediums for years but lights are just fine to me, especially if you're playing acoustic only. It's a lot on the hands/arms.
@@jasonvalcourt definitely
Excellent presentation, overall. Would you be so kind as to tell me the size of the truss rod socket? Thanks in advance :)
@Sound-Box Much appreciated. I want to say 5mm, but I'm away till December and can check then and drop a line, cheers!
@jasonvalcourt I thought 4 mm... Thank you very much for your availability! Cheers :)
Looks as hard to play as some of the more technical Black Metal like Nile, Origin and Dying Fetus.
It's a mind twister for me but somehow sounds like music
What strings did you put on it?
@@nashie16 D'Addario EJ16
@jasonvalcourt Thanks mate. Also, you said in your description you had it adjusted. What did you have done? Sorry for the dumb questions, I just bought this as my first guitar and know nothing.
Hmmm, I'm not sure what I meant, but maybe the action at the nut or a truss rod adjustment. Basic things, but if yours doesn't play right, see about getting a setup, cheers!
@jasonvalcourt thank you!
@nashie16 you bet!
I just ordered one today . I have never played acoustic steel but I'll start with this one. I've only played nylon and electric. Thanks for the video. Do you know if it sounds better than the Ibanez Artwood AW54?
@ThunderMetal-o3n Awesome, I hope you love it. I haven't played that Ibanez. I did have an older low end Ibanez through here a couple years back and was surprised at how nice it sounded, cheers!
@jasonvalcourt I just got it and it buzzes on the 6th string when I use a pick and fret it on the 7th fret or higher. Do you have that issue as well?
Could be worth having someone do a setup to really know, but it could be as simple as adjusting the truss rod. Hard to say from here, but a lot of guitars could use a setup right out of the box. Hope you are happy with it otherwise.
You could just have the string spacing adjusted. I did it to mine, was easy.
@randombrutalttv Nice. I opted to leave it alone but that would take care of pretty much the only feature I'd change. Great guitars!
I have the FG800 bigger brother. Of the dozen guitars in the house it is one of my favourites (despite being the cheapest)
I believe it, cheers!
Does a 2016 have scalloped bracing ?
I believe the 700s do not and the 800 series does.
What about the PRICES?
The Delta can still be bought new for @ $450. They don't make the 51 anymore, but on the used market I occasionally see them for 350+. Deltas as well on the used market, cheers!
Yes, exactly as you said these guitars open up sweetly. Greetings from from Boxford, MA
Greetings!
One of the guitars just came up on my Facebook Marketplace. Right above the nut it shows the letters SLM. In the sound hole sticker it does show it being a 5014 model. Would you know the diff between yours and that one, if there is one, maybe only the year? Also, is your neck on the slim or thick side. I have pretty short fingers..Seller is asking $200. It looks to be in very good shape in the pics...
@jimmyv6703 SLM is Saint Louis Music, the Alvarez distributor/creator of Alvarez brand. Hard to know much more without seeing it. My neck is pretty thin/ normal, not chunky at all. Some are made with an adjustable saddle, with screws. I'm not a fan of the screws based on my technique resting my palm on the bridge. I like the sound from mine. Good luck!
@@jasonvalcourt Thanks for the info, I appreciate it.
@@jasonvalcourt Ya, this is the model that does have the adjustable saddle with screws.
You're welcome
Might not be an issue for you at all, cheers!
This FS800 or the FS830 ? Trying to decide between the two for my first guitar, i am 56yrs old and have never played a musical instrument but really want to learn
Reasonable choices. The 830 is a little more ornate. I hope you can go play them both somewhere. Fun stuff, good luck learning!
@jasonvalcourt I can look at them and handle them, but since I am wanting to learn and have never played i wouldn't be able to try them out by playing them
Really great review, thank you, help me choose what's right for me
@martincoward9671 Much appreciated, cheers!
Nice job! Many thanks!
Much appreciated!
Given a bone saddle was like $5-10 for my fs800 I think everyone should just try this. In person I think bone sounds a lot better. On your video it sounds similar.
Excellent, good stuff. I like that "dry" sounding bone that I hear as well, cheers!
For the money you cant beat a Yamaha ! I have had 20 maybe more ! I still have a FG 75 solid top red label that I use from time to time just for picking !
Excellent. They are always reliable in my experience as well, cheers!
Mine finally came in. Already put the first ding in it on second day 😔
Hard to believe that such an affordable of this quality exists at this price point $300 . I found one in a pawn shop and was delighted , I of course bought it . Get one you 'll be surprised .
Agreed, nice find!
I have this same guitar with no electronics
Excellent! Hard to find them now. I still love mine.
FS800 What strings are on it? Sounds good. Have you thought of replacing the nut, saddle and pins on it?
D'Addario EJ 16s. I did those upgrades on the 850 but not on the 800.
The bone is mellower, the plastic is louder but the highs are pingy. Maybe a different strum approach would help that, but the mellowed is prefer
Nice, I'm for the mellow as well.
Im curious if you went with the 44mm nut? I hear it makes these FGs even better to play because of slightly wider string spacing?
Apologies for the delayed response! I believe that is the nut width, but I do know the total string spacing at the nut that I made is 38.1mm. Slightly more room than the stock one.
I would use a bone nut, bone saddle, and rosewood or ebony bridgepins. Sounds nice though, 👌
I've yet to test the pins, but did go with bone N/S!
I feel Fs800 has warmer tone, and FG850 has more bright tone, is it correct ?
I think that's fair. To me the 850 has more sparkle and the 800 has surprising bass for a small guitar.
This video convinced me to buy one of these, thanks! Does the one in this video have the original saddle and nut? I saw a few other people recommend switching out the saddle and nut for a bone saddle and bone nut, would you recommend this?
Awesome, I hope you like it! This has the original (Urea) nut and saddle. It would be a totally preferential change that is extremely subjective in my opinion. Personally, I like what I get out of bone. To my ears it has a more chaulky, or biting tone that I enjoy. But there's nothin lacking in the stock nut and saddle in my opinion and some find it hard to even decipher a difference. Some hear a huge difference.
Soundwise no need for changing to bone.
I feel you, the original setup is not really lacking at all. Fun stuff to play with though! I do like the bite that I hear in the bone. As I mentioned in one of the videos, I was shocked in playing the video back that the difference was so hard to discern. Seemed so drastic from the player's POV!
Are there any guitars you recommend that have a bone nut and saddle installed already for under $350?
Many do, but, off the top of my head I played a lower end Guild that did (video on my channel), and I believe Recording King models do. Both my Alvarez parlors did and I love them, but they're pushing $350. Hope that helps!
@@jasonvalcourt for the money which are you going for in that lower price point?
For the options I mentioned, (assuming they come with the bone) I would personally start with Alvarez, then RK.
Great to hear you play my guitar! 😀 I have the FS800 and Im impressed how good an inexpensive guitar sounds. I was thinking of upgrading the saddle, nut and pins.
The FG850 sounds great
It's a good one! I recommend them all the time. Great value, quality and sound.
Great stuff!
Much appreciated!
Wow It sounds great I tried a FG820 the other day and I was not impressed.
Thanks! Bummer, maybe it was a dud or could use a setup. Something I've been amazed by in my other projects is how much improvement happens in the final setup stages. I didn't expect it.
So so guitar Bad hair!
haha! You're not alone in that view. But, maybe you use bad like Peter Piper. To each their own I suppose.
Great review with solid information and sound. I was gonna sell mine, but now I think I'll keep it for a while. I think the top is solid spruce and the back and sides are solid "white wood" which means pine. Pine is soft and shapes easily, perhaps that is what allows these guitars to sound good and be inexpensive. I'm also usind D'Addarrio nickel, 10-47 and they really shine on this guitar. Yep, gonna use mine for travel, maybe install a $20 Monoprice pickup and just enjoy it. Always gets great compliments on looks. Thanks again for the review.
Much appreciated. Whenever I play this one, if I close my eyes I simply enjoy the sound. There's something about it that hits the mark. The longer I play it the chunky neck feels comfortable. Most people think these are trash, and there's truth to their fast construction flaws and setup needs, but I gave this one a setup recently and as hard as I listen, I don't hear the construction flaws/blemishes!
Both nice but the 850 really shines!
It does!
Great guitar. Great playing!
Much appreciated!
I've owned and played one for almost 2 years. I maintain humidity religiously, no change in altitude ect. The neck is soooop far out it's unplayable, a straight edge points the fretboard at the BOTTOM OF THE BRIDGE !! intonation is a joke ! Note...I play exclusively with custom light .011 tuned a half step down, and in DADGAD also a half down. So it's been cared for properly, and has never been tuned to full (compairitavly) tension. It's a $400 guitar you might get two years out of. I'd like to see all of these reviewers opinions two years down the road, I liked it too.......for a year and a half.......
Bummer, sounds like a dud! These are both 2018s and are holding up well. I play the 51 a whole lot. Great guitar to grab and go. Hope you have other guitars you love!
I started on a similar yamaha 51 years ago and have a yearning to buy one of these to remind me of the ''good old days'' I've always regretted selling it, but needed the money at the time. as you do when you're young! A great review man, Bet I get one soon, and Hi from the UK.
Excellent, I started on a yamaha as well. Hope you grab one and set it up well. Good sounding model. Cheers to good ole days!
