This is definitely the best most informative and straight up review I've ever seen...
Good job buddy!!!
Keep it up
Clifford Chan thanks!!! Kind words!
I love your reviews man. I'd say you're one of the better tech channels. Not all about the ads and etc. You're reviews are genuine. Thanks man 😁
Gary Aquino thanks for the kind words 😄👍
This was the best review of this laptop I have seen so far, I was surprised to see you only have 3k subs keep it up!
zain alsaif I hope it was helpful 👍😊
Very cool review. I just can't see dropping $1k on an electronic device with zero (English) customer support. On an unrelated note, the way you touch the case around the 1:45 mark makes me feel funny.
Awesome job, as usual. The review, I mean. Not the I-need-to-show-my-therapist-with-the-dolls part.
Jake Payne lol you always make me laugh
Then we're even, brother, lol.
I have it from trading shanzen and support in Germany is okay, even they don't sell it in official in Germany support is OK... I heard that rhey opened a store in Vienna Austria, it's 700km away from me but I go this way often because I drive to my homeland Croatia👍🇭🇷
Nice Review Bro, one thing to say is second M2 expansion is only Sata.... Keep up the good work, thumbs up 👍
What a great review! I actually purchased this laptop last night and have been doing a bit more research on it today and stumbled across your review. Your editing, knowledge, and presentation is representative of far more than 3.6k subs! Subbed and excited to watch the channel grow!
Thanks for your kind words!
Hi I know 3 year have passed but I want to ask if how's the laptop doing? Is it still great?
@@jakemangabay1879 I don't do anything intensive with it but it works just as well as when I bought it. It's very sturdy. I've dropped it more times than I can count and it's still going strong!
@@dhoyft411 How bout the battery bro?
@@jakemangabay1879 I haven't done any specific tests for how long it lasts but I wanna say it lasts at a bare minimum at least 4 hours with youtube playing . Likely even longer but it has been a non-issue for me because I don't really do anything important with it. I'll update if I get a solid answer.
I went ahead and bought the Mi Pro i5 model and got it for a great price. Took some effort to change windows to english 🤣 but it's a great laptop, very happy.
Johan Gertzen how to change to english?
Hi Alex,
I had to install a new copy of windows using an 8gb usb. I used the media tool from the microsoft website to create the disk image, and the drivers can be found on xiaomi's website. I heard that you can install an english language pack, which would be cheaper than buying a new licence key for windows. If you do decide to proceed with purchasing this laptop, you could always ask any computer shop to help with the language issue. I am very happy with the laptop so far. Hope it helps :)
Johan Gertzen THANKS!
Nice review! Can you confirm the type of SSD that will fit in the 2nd slot? Can it use NVME PCIe? Some say yes, others say it will accept but not run at the faster speed. Thanks!
NB Feel free to do another review of this laptop running Linux! ; )
It's a Gen3 X4 PCIe lane for NVMe M.2 (2280 standard compatible) capabilities. If you swap the SSD slots performance is near identical. ANd I wish I was more Linux savvy hahaha...from time to time I play around with other OS's or watch Wendell do some stuff and feel like I CAN DO THAT, but nope :D :D
I hope that answered what you were asking^
Can you instal SATA SSD too (to second slot), or is it only NVMe?
I do i do, it's nice ultra book, happy that I looked in RUclips for second opinion.....😊👍🙏
MS office is pre-installed in it and that MS office is activated.
But when you are installing new Windows 10, how will you get that activated MS office?
SO, this is a good question and it's not something I looked in to, however according to someone else they applied this method as it also is Chinese only.. This is a quote from their work around:
"I was able to register the copy of office 2016 they give with the computer to my Outlook account, to be able to redownload it later, I was also able to use the Windows 10 Home licence on my language installed Windows. "
So if you have an existing license with outlook setup it seems you can fandangle a work around there. However not something I have tried.
I hope that helps!
Alternately finding the key and contacting MS support to unlock it after DL may also work^
is it better than del, asus, toshiba, acer, samsung for the same spece
Hello!
Very good review!
I want to ask you about the license.
Can you please tell the steps that we have to do to activate Windows?
How we can have license key?
So the license is already activated for the windows 10 Chinese edition. I confirmed this while installing Pro on to the laptop... It validates the key when you fresh install.
Since Skylake CPUs/Chipsets the key is stored internally by the MOBO via a small ROM chip. This is used to validate existing hardware with an OS version. So when you install a fresh Win 10 multi language pack your key from the chinese OS validates it as a legitimate Windows key (rightfully so because it is). and will automatically update after the install.
If you're familiar with installing an OS via USB the process is literally as simple as doing this, and the key will apply itself.
very nice video good job, deserves more subs (y)
Great video, thank you!
Thanks hope it was helpful!
Hi. Is it good laptop for multitasker? Like many open program like microsoft word, google docs, youtube, adobe acrobat, and zoom? Thank you
I think so, they have newer versions of this laptop out now. I still use this one regularly. It's actually set up and attached to a monitor and I use it more in a desktop format.
@@EightSixMatt okay. Thank you 😊
Great video! Trying to get my friend to buy this because it's amazing but he's reluctant because of the support. He built his own PC, I think he's capable of figuring out any problems to be honest. What do you think, should he go for this or something else?
Cyanidesushi I love it, Ask him when’s the last time he used support from a company? That’s sort of how I rationalize it. I can’t recall a time I’ve ever used a manufacturers support for a laptop personally... but some people do.
I’m still editing on it over my rig just because 😄 I like a nice notebook I can work on even if it’s a bit slower than my desktop rig... grab it take it work on it and I am happy with it.
Eight-Six True, i’ll keep trying to convince him. It’s so nice lol
Hey dude! This was the best review I have seen of this laptop. Will buy it for programming (web) and school work (MS Office), will it fit my needs? Thanks!
Thanks for the kind words :) I'm sure it will fit your needs. Xiaomi makes some great stuff.
@@EightSixMatt Do you still have it? Is it still good?
Sure do, have a setup in the master bedroom where we use it daily. It's mainly used for Design Space (a Cricut web based application) and occasionally Premier for broll edits.
It's one of those 'no regret' purchases for me. I get buyers remorse pretty easily but it's one of my favorite laptops despite some of it's mild short comings. I'll eventually get another one as a daily driver laptop, just waiting for them to put the next best thing out (not just a mild upgrade) :)
@@EightSixMatt Ok, so I will definitely get one :)
Nice review
X3mdain thanks for checking it out 😊👍
You still have this computer? Can you review it hooked up with your 4k LG monitor?
In order to tell you it works displaying out/gaming/rendering fine I don't need a review to tell you it does :). I just can't get it it to passively charge over USB-C while displaying out as it was advertised to do. The newer models I think have addressed the issue.
The LG monitor I have should offer the right power delivery while allowing 4k @ 60Hz but I couldn't show that because I couldn't make it happen.
How do you find this laptop for video editing in premiere? Does it handle it well ?
TheKelday it does! I made it my daily for a while and did several videos on it. I actually enjoyed it but nothing beats editing at a desktop. Depending on what you edit with, you’ll have some slower render times but nothing horrendously terrible. The 1080p screen makes it a little cluttered if you’re used to something like UHD. I wish this laptop had at least 1440p resolution at its minimum, but it doesn’t.
Eight-Six cheers for the reply! I currently have a new desktop that handles it well. But looking for a laptop to edit stuff when I'm away from home. Is the timeline scrubbing ok? Thats my main concern I don't want to get frustrated what putting it together.
TheKelday I didn’t have any noteworthy issues but I also use raw footage which is cumbersome, I’m just lazy 😊. A lot of people pre render footage to make scrubbing cake.
Really good review! Could you maybe tell me about the 3.5mm jack's audio output? I use headphones often and some laptops sound awful with headphones connected. Thanks bud!
Johan Gertzen it uses intel based integrated chip that utilizes Realtek HD audio. To me it sounds good but, sound questions are loaded questions. People are picky and opinionated on sound.
You can also use the Dolby Atmos Certified app to fine tune audio settings. Allegedly it makes it better (but I can’t really differentiate much) there is a headphones mode loadout within the app (downloaded separately)
Thanks for the reply bud! As long as it's not a flat tune, I'd be happy. I am currently in China and will buy one soon, still contemplating between the i5 and i7. There's some good price cuts if you buy from third party resellers. Thanks bud!
I would think the best deals are to be had in China itself. I was going to say I'm jealous of you being there because you have direct access to brands like Xiaomi :D I have to go through hoops and play the waiting game when I want something from them.
BEFORE you go Notebook Pro, they released a gaming laptop thats very similar and has some boosted specs. I remember reading the release notes on it and thinking "It's just a better Notebook Pro" the caveat was it's a little thicker. Faster transfer rates, HDMI 2.0 (going off memory but I'm fairly sure of that) and just all around a bit better for about the same price. Take a glance at those, I think the caveat is, it's not AS slim as this line up (being aimed at gaming) even has customizable RGB backlighting I think (if thats a thing for you)
I really enjoy being here, and I bought several xiaomi products already. Just got the mi 8 as well. It is really a great phone. I was looking at their gaming laptop, the only thing that's holding me back is that they used 7th gen instead of 8th gen processors. I want to use the laptop for editing and a little gaming, but I suppose it could also do fine.
If there isn't a specific reason for aiming at Coffee lake they both use the same socket, and same 14nm transistors. There isn't a huge gain going gen 8 over gen 7, so let price guide you there. Intels been struggling a bit with innovation and upgrade jumps.I haven't looked at much comparison between the two, but it's safe to assume there isn't much to really compare between them. Kaby lakes main advantage over Skylake was Optane support which isn't a consumer friendly benefit anyways. Coffee lake didn't bring much to the table either from hear-say.
What's the maximum SSD for this? Can you put 2 tb SSD?
After I read the whole text I saw that you write it... But still great video, my i7 8550U should come on 12.11 or 13.11 but I am running it with Linux..
What version are you going to run? I stopped playing with Linux years ago. One day i'll mess with it again.
Linux Mint 19 Cinnamon, I am big Linux fan, and will make it look like Macos 😂👍
@@sasag2077 I played with an early version of Mint, very Windowsy-feel to it. I like it as far as being a polished distro thats more every-day-user friendly. Back in the day I used Red Hat Fedora off and on. I always had hopes Linux would catch up to people but it's still a pretty niche thing for the every day users of the world.
I need to dedicate a rig to it and start playing some more.
Well Linux took big leap forward, and with new projects like Steam Proton you can play much windows games on it... For Editing I will use DaVinci Resolve, and for pictures Darktable and Gimp... And wannt cost no money. But I will update Sata Ssd with 2Tb so I can take movies and music on the road
By the way, sorry for my English, I am Croat, living in Germany so I speak better than I write English..
you can buy it from gearbest at 700/750 ...
Occasionaly (also check geekbuying) same type of site, they rotate who sells it for how much all of the time (sort between region/factories sometimes better models are for less). Downsides: VISA does not like their credit vendor process, and shipping can take up to two months for either site.
The plus side is both of those sites have great export brands (if you're in the west) like JMGO and Xiaomi.
Can I ask what are the cons after a year of use ?
The other night I was sittin in the bed next to the wife, told her 'this is my favorite laptop out of the many I have owned' I am a bit in love with it so it may not be a fair question for me to answer :D
One thing I do wish it featured is a touch screen. She uses a design space app on it and wishes she could sit in the bed and use a touch screen. Other than this I have no real complaints. I do wish I could make ram upgrades, but alas, I cannot as it is soldered.
Thanks Bro. I think it becomes clear that this particular Chinese product is not a trap in the long term. I'm a casual user who mostly work with office suites, watch videos, browsing and occasionally plays not-so-heavy games!
You should check out a tutorial on Ytube on how to replace the thermal paste in this thing. It will boost the performance even more!
Mr Everything a lot of Chinese brands face the ‘China Garbage’ stigma, but Xiaomi is not one of those brands. 😊 my experience with them has always been quality, with a dash of sadness that they don’t open their US market more. I don’t like having to purchase through third party shippers usually.
I had suspected this laptop to be great and now
you have my doubts removed.
Can you update the screen yourself
blooskys1 what do you mean? Like add a higher res panel?
