Nice to hear Sandy's musing about the old days when pickups were real trucks. Nowadays the majority of pickups have 4 doors and a short bed so that the owner can drop their daughter off at school on the way to work in heavy traffic. Occasionally they go to Home Depot and throw a few things in the back but beds are too short to move a couch or haul 4x8 plywood etc.

Yes, Agreed on digital mirrors. I have far less visual acuity these days and need to wear glasses to read the dash instruments. Basically totally blurry after focusing on the road distance. Standard mirrors are no problem as no need to refocus for distance. The digital 15” reverse mirror in the 3 is also fine, but a small rear view mirror would be a problem for my fading eyesight. Human eyesight starts getting shitty for most people after 40-43years on the planet.
@@human_brian I have a 2019 Bolt with the digital mirror. I love it for the wide angle view. Essentially eliminates the blind spot. I am not sure why, but I don't have a problem focusing on the mirror. I am over 75 years old, post cataract surgery, so I have no "focus ability" of my eye lens. Maybe because I have the seat all the way back to accommodate my legs the mirror is far enough away that it is easy to focus on.
This series has been very educational for me. Thanks for the easy to understand explanation of things that might be common knowledge for some, but not for all.
Only problem with the Cybertruk is how long we have to wait to get it! (thanks Sandy true American legend with a conscience [mask] and a heart [cashiers])
I’m inside the first 20,000 orders but I fully intend to repeatedly punt my position for 18-24 months so that my price for the 3 motor + autopilot truck stays consistent but the truck itself is better.
Mark Plott we are all hoping so. I’d prefer not to relive the 3+year wait I had for the 3, but that’s the reality of RHD at this stage. If Engbland gets a factory, maybe that may assist RHD countries, depends on their product mix I guess
@@markplott4820 nonsense, pickup doesnt need to change and they have really changed with the 100 years, trucks are made to be modified easily asf, look at the ford f350 or f450, remove the bed and you can add basically everytype of equipments you want.
I love the steering wheel design for intown and highway driving. A paper impact crash protection dashboard makes a lot of sense to me. My dad ran a funeral home from the 1950's into the 1990's and I saw a lot of crash victims. My dad wanted me to see what can happen in car accidents. A well designed dashboard can save lives.
The only reason the center rear view mirror is where it is, is because that is the only place one can put a mirror to see out the back window. Once you go to the camera and video screen, there is no reason it needs to stay there. For the cyber truck, it should go down in front of the steering wheel as far forward as you can get it to minimize the focus change as much as possible. It should be centered in front of the steering wheel, it does not need to be offset to the center of the vehicle. Only the driver needs to see it. If you make it wider than the one shown in this video, the side mirrors could be added on either side of the rear view. If one really wanted to make it so that one did not need to change focus to look at it, you could embed the screen face up in the dash behind a lens to make it appear further away, and view it through a mirror
Great show Sandy! Love the Ram...I have a 2010, bought it new and its the best thing i have ever bought. I will be buying a cybertruck as soon as they are available...got my reservation.
They might use the coanda effect for air distribution which would be pretty sweet. Another thing is that Tesla doesn't need to redesign engines or anything like that. If you think about it, all Tesla is doing is just putting a different skin over the same tech which is just crazy awesome. Their autopilot system is also superbly dynamic and doesn't need much tweaking to fit a different form of vehicle.
Sandy cool tidbit about the f150, it not only has heated seats but also a heated steering wheel, a heated gear shifter, and heated center console cover. So, that older shifter is still quite luxurious, and to me the heated console cover makes the f150 all the more plushy
I'm a tesla buyer but also a former truck owner. I can confirm that what we like most about our trucks is that it's bad ass and rugged. The electric parts just a nice plus. Cant I enjoy trucking in the out door and also saving my planet?
For offroad use that steering wheel is useless. I took the Land Rover course and rule number one is never have you thumbs inside the wheel unless you want to break them when you hit a rut or boulder and the wheel jerks. You always held the wheel with all digits outside so the wheel would slide under pressure and your thumb was safe and you maintained control.
I see the cyber truck as a blank canvas. The outside body, being stainless steel, can have all kinds of stuff welded to it (with a bit of effort being stainless). The dash is clean, empty and ready for all kinds of radios, gun holsters, cup holders, nodding dogs and whatever you want to bolt on.
The dash etymology, very good. So many people don't know the basics. Jay leno is really good with the older tech explanations like "balls out". Very cool. Keep up the great work!
I love my Digital (DVR) mirror! I only have a focus issue when wearing prescription glasses, but still better vision than a normal mirror. As long as it is a full screen, not the 2 or 3inch insert screen. I have a 2019 Transit where a standard mirror has very little rear visibility.
How can Sandy not see the HVAC slit at the top of the marbled dash???? It's right between the white part and the black. There's a huge slit just like in the 3 and Y.
Thank you for educating me. I saw you on Autoline After Hours and was hooked. I was aware of Arcimoto but didn’t think about it much. I want a full steering wheel and an option for a grey or black dash instead of the faux-marble look. the rear passthrough fold-down window would be great for outdoors camping use. Excited for duel motor cybertruck! about 65,000 on the list.
I like the long panel mirror on top of window that sectioned with different video screens instead of mirrors like the long added mirror from 60s shevy or Nissan mirror in the mini trucks good field of view
I agree about the steering wheel, give me the standard round wheel that I can grab anywhere. Another concern I have is the under bed storage compartment, I have seen many panels in trucks get bent to oblivion by the cargo tossed in the back. Will this be the first Tesla with a spare tire? I hope so.
Kenneth Bowden I am sure it will be available as a cost option, and it certainly would be worth getting a spare for this vehicle as those size wheels/tyres will initially be uncommon at remote tyre shops. Sadly the spare wheel may cost a bundle, like on other Tesla’s
@@kdkd693 www.tirerack.com/tires/TireSearchResults.jsp?zip-code=87801&width=35X&ratio=12.5&diameter=18 The tire size is already pretty popular. Having someplace dedicated for a spare other than just loose in the bed is what I am hoping for.
The white dash in the cybertruck is pressed paper! It was mentioned on the presentation day when some people was taking a ride. They mentioned it was hard and cold, guessed it was some kind of stone. But it is pressed paper!
I hope that the clean and simple elements of the dashboard (for example this compressed paper lining) and door panels will open the aftermarket factories to offer special interior body kits as replacement parts.
Interesting Safety talk... Since the exoskeleton is so tough, I wonder if Cybertruck will have some internal crumple zone? Maybe the seats will have some forward motion on frontal crash. The fancy dash might move forward... looking forward to the crash test videos
The dash and then perhaps the steering wheel (yoke) are the two things I dislike about the Cybertruck. I just hate the dash. I really hope they change course on that or at least provide some differing options.
I took a Lyft in a Ram and the interior was very dressy and comfortable but it had a lot more creaking sounds than I would expect. I prefer the shifter on the tree or on the dash like in the older Prius and some French autos unless you actually have a manual in which case in the console or on the floor is better a push button shifter would also be ok if there transmission is automatic.
Those seats will be comfortable, no doubt. They will be designed for rough travel as well as highway. Plenty of time yet to fine tune the internals before production ramped. The middle front seat doesn’t need super comfort levels for sure, but it may surprise as this truck will be super roomy inside with the exoskeleton- moreso than even the existing full size trucks I suspect
Can confirm the digital mirror point and refocusing the eyes… I have a dashcam mirror for my ioniq to improve rear window visibility (it's split and not very big, and often I haul a lot of equipment, so it's blocked). Quick glances are just not possible with this.
It seems like the digital mirror could actually be some kind of heads up so would have the distance built in and I guess you could see through it kind of
I'm sure that the whole dashboard system is a prototype at this point. Airbag systems, Ac systems, Side mirror screens, etc. have to be designed in. That dash is just temporary.
Elon told Jay Leno the CyberTruk comes as shown. He hates the "bait and switch" so long a standard of the car industry that you think they ALL do it. If you haven't noticed by now, Tesla's different.
I think after owning a Model 3 for maybe 7-8 months now I really struggle to appreciate other interiors. The Ram interior is nice, but man... How many buttons do they need!? At that point it feels like there's buttons to enable/disable other buttons, it's madness. Maybe if you haven't own a Model 3/Y you think you need a lot of buttons, but when you have owned a 3/Y you quickly realise you rarely used any of them and don't really miss them. (Can safely say I miss having a wiper stalk though... Maybe the only complaint I have. :p)
My 72 Ford truck included an air conditioning system that never broke down. When driving at speed those little quarter glass windows provided all the "AC" we needed.
@@user-vp1sc7tt4m Ah yes, something that should never have gone out of style, wing vents. Something else I liked was the headlight switch on the floorboard. Modern steering column stalks have way too many functions.
'Digital Mirrors' are actually poor substitutes. They are monoscopic vision, not stereo; You can't move your head to see a slightly different perspective; the other drivers can't see YOU in the mirror (an important cue); If there is dirt on the camera, or glare, they're useless; not to mention that the objects are as far away as the screen, not the objects true distance (ie. your focal point as you mention). It's tech for tech's sake...
I expect the Cybertruck won't have a cabin heat exchanger and fan. Tesla will combine then with the other heat exchanger units under the hood and just use ducting to transfer air in and out of the cabin. Without fuel lines under the hood, there are fewer issues with preventing a fire under the hood (perhaps in the frunk cargo area) exhausting through ductwork through the firewall into the cabin. Can always install a fire-shutter in the ducts as the firewall.
You're completely ignoring the high noise and sound levels you would get. The interior has to stay sealed up so that you can both recirculate cold or warm air as well as to keep the interior as quiet as possible.
Sandy, look way back in automotive history for jump seats. Early touring cars from the 1900s to the 1920s had a large back seat area with a fixed bench seat in the far back, and a middle row with folding jump seats behind the front row of seats. Dad had a 1917 Reo Touring car with a folding soft top, half height doors, no fixed side glass, and two jump seats between the front row of seats and the fixed bench seat in the far back of the rear area. The doors were below shoulder height and had removable side curtains, some with glass, and many with flexible materials similar to later convertibles. They were very uncomfortable in the rain and even more so in the snow. Dad had some Bison Blankets, kept in a trunk similar to a travel trunk behind the back seat, and a couple of charcoal fuel foot warmers since only the front seat had any kind of heating. Check out this Wikipedia link to touring cars. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Touring_car
I really enjoy these videos. You learn so much lingo and fun facts. Sometimes Sandy is a bit weird in the wording (like what is "masculine design" but that may be a generational thing and because I'm not a native English speaker).
100% agree with Sandy's steering wheel dislike. And as a wearer of progressive lenses I can see how the rearview mirror wouldn't work at all. Now if you could move it from the roof down to the top of the dash then it would work. Would still rather have an actual mirror though.
Thanks for the dashboard explanation. I knew about the jumpseat, but the dashboard was before my time :-D Its a little tricky trying to figure out how much Cybertruck features are prototype only and subject to change. I hope they are wise and creative about making the best adjustments before I get mine. The yoke looks good for a prototype, but NO WAY in hell I want it over a steering wheel until they give this thing wings to fly. I hope they make the back seats and bulkhead for the vault to fold down. This will add more utility I'm looking for. The best carpeting is no carpeting. I want to take this thing overland. You can have a nice looking comfy floor that is also super easy to clean and stay Cyberpunk. Cheers to an awesome design Tesla! Lets make it the best it can be.
@@clarksmith6850 I hope that is 90% true. I doubt it is 100% true. Many weeks ago he suggested there would be a 3% size reduction so people could fit in in smaller garages, then that changed. If they can make improvements before final production specs, I expect they will. I don't want a size reduction, so I'm happy that change was reversed. The steering yoke looks cool, but it is dysfunctional/dangerous for offroading. I don't want that. A back seat that folds down with the vault bulkhead to make the vault full bed size+ with access from the cockpit is superutilitarian, and gets two thumbs up full support from me.
@@brandoYT I had a GMC Sierra plow truck in the 90's that had a tough rubberized work truck floor that I loved. It looked fine and stayed that way for years of tough use. Cleaning was super simple, and I'm sure its cost was low. I appreciate some comfort and luxury in a seat, but for flooring, tough utility all the way. A drain plug might be asking too much, but I like the way you think.
Several things on the Prototype cyber truck need to be changed in order to make it street legal. The steering wheel has to be a roundish shape, it will need windshield wipers of some sort, it will need side mirrors if cameras are still not legalized in the US, and it will need better headlights that meet DOT standards. These will all be sorted out before it goes into production.
I have payed the reservation in UK.I would prefer a domed wind screen like my current Renault kangoo ev I think that drops under the bonnet by a few inches than the flat cyber one I think .Early days so may be wrong ! Nice topics from you .Thanks.
The disappointment with the GM truck is real. LOL I lost my taste with GM/Chevy back in the 90's. After 2 bad trucks and dealer repair facilities that were trying to play me I vowed to never buy again and I've held true to my word. I gather GM/Chevy could care less. To that I just respond with the middle finger. Never again.
As much as I like the look for the compressed-paper marble-looking dash, I suspect that the factory model will not look so simple. I hope I am wrong as I ordered my Cyber Truck on my birthday! Great videos!
They will probably have to switch out the steering wheel for legal reasons. On a side note: Ever notice that Tesla often makes concepts and prototypes with no side mirrors? They end up adding them later for legal reasons.
I could be wrong, But i do not believe that White paper dashboard is the real dashboard. It is covering the true dashboard up, cause they want to keep it secret for now. think about it, how can airbags deploy from that dashboard passenger side... Just a theory, but i hope the true dash is released closer to production and it blows out mind on the cool dashboard features!
The idea of “old time trucker” isn’t going to live for very much longer as time progresses forward so for the sake of humanity, that shouldn’t matter anymore. It’s always time to continuously move on to more efficient, friendly, and better things.
Please do a video on what happens when the Tesla Cybertruck is involved in an accident. If it’s all one piece exoskeleton, what happens when it crushes? Do you have to purchase a whole front end? Whole exo? How are insurance companies going to respond?
Good stuff. Will be interesting to see the Cybertruck but I'm really looking forward to the electric F150. Ford trucks have always pushed the right buttons for me. My buddy has a new King Ranch that has an out of this world interior, wonderful leather with inlays. I never thought a p/u could feel that luxurious. Still, I'd go for something more plain (and less likely to be stolen).
I think the Cybertruck interior is a tad too minimalistic. Where are u going to put all your stuff? Also prefer more traditional layout with a screen in front And as you pointed out, the steering wheel is a joke. Or a yoke😁

"Seat made out of a kid or something" 😂🤣😭
Sandy is so entertaining haha lol
Can't wait for the Cybertruck, good video as always! Thank you!
Love the CyberTruck episodes - any chance for a single episode about the Tesla Semi?
Certainly a possibility! Thanks for the recommendation, Rani! Appreciate you tuning in.
This series has been very educational for me. Thanks for the easy to understand explanation of things that might be common knowledge for some, but not for all.
Glad you've found the content insightful! Thanks for tuning in!
Only problem with the Cybertruk is how long we have to wait to get it!
(thanks Sandy true American legend with a conscience [mask] and a heart [cashiers])
Steering wheel...I hope they change it.
I’m inside the first 20,000 orders but I fully intend to repeatedly punt my position for 18-24 months so that my price for the 3 motor + autopilot truck stays consistent but the truck itself is better.
Well, we really don't know. The Cybertruck could easily be made in a tent, and we can get it in 18 months.
Mark Plott we are all hoping so. I’d prefer not to relive the 3+year wait I had for the 3, but that’s the reality of RHD at this stage. If Engbland gets a factory, maybe that may assist RHD countries, depends on their product mix I guess
These videos comparing the pickup trucks are great to understand the pickup truck market and how it has changed and is changing today.
ICE pickup have NOT changed much in 100 years, it's why we need the Cybertruck.
@@markplott4820 nonsense, pickup doesnt need to change and they have really changed with the 100 years, trucks are made to be modified easily asf, look at the ford f350 or f450, remove the bed and you can add basically everytype of equipments you want.
Dude, you are so good. Nice job. And hats off to your editor!! Love the Sandy zingers. :-)
Thanks for the kind words and thanks for tuning in! Nice to be able to have some fun with Sandy and the viewers :)
That GM burn @ 18:07.
😱😱
Munro you are ruthless!!
Haha!
Seriously in-depth video! Loved every moment of it!
Great vid with great Sandy history and commentary. Keep em comin!!
No you can't. Stay indoors.
@@briseboy lol I didn't mean now. Its not for sale till 2022
what an awesome channel love that theres no bias and everything is said based on career experience
Love Sandy’s delivery. Really love the editors counterpoints. I live on a tiny island with no use for giant trucks but still I have to watch....
More of these! Thanks for this Team Sandy
Thank you for this series on the Cyber Truck. I appreciate the educational nature on basic suspension and vehicle construction techniques.
I’m a big fan of the front bench seat. Our family has 6. Makes the Cyber truck perfect for our family.
I'm glad Sandy is wearing a mask still. Without a mask I do not recognize him :D
Props to the editors, 11/10 great work
Thanks! I'll let the editor know. Munro Live
22:18. Am I the only one that noticed the spider on the poster? :-) Great work Sandy, and Shoutout to the camera man!
No, just went through the comments to see if someone else noticed. I like those cute tiny spiders.
When Gali said on HyperChange that he put you and Mark Frohnmayer together and you were going to be helping Arcimoto streamline their manufacturing I immediately bought some and it has doubled! I’m on the list for the Cybertruck, I hope my old Sierra lasts until delivery. Thanks again. Your reminding us to tip the workers who are putting their lives on the line to serve us keeps me aware of that and I try to tip accordingly.
Doug Demuro fans will know the Easter Egg at 14:48
A classic 5/5 episode: learned what an OEM stands for, the origins of term dashboard, kid handling/placement strategies along with pleasing critiques and insights of the auto industry. "A must-show for dads with kids!" ******/******
I want a full steering wheel and an option for a grey or black dash instead of the faux-marble look. the rear passthrough fold-down window would be great for outdoors camping use. Excited for duel motor cybertruck! about 65,000 on the list.
Prototype wheel is not legal. It has to be a round shape.
What an excellent video! The R. Crumb illustration was just a complete treat as well.
I really wish the Cybertruck has an option for center console storage in the front seat, to replace that middle seat. 5 seats is enough for me.
I'm not a truck guy but I love tech I normally drive a sedan or suv and now I want a truck but only because of how versatile this truck will be
Thank heaven for RUclipsrs discovering Sandy 🙏
Videos for boys 👌
@@kdkd693 www.tirerack.com/tires/TireSearchResults.jsp?zip-code=87801&width=35X&ratio=12.5&diameter=18
The tire size is already pretty popular. Having someplace dedicated for a spare other than just loose in the bed is what I am hoping for.
Can they make it a option to get rid of the front middle seat in the cybertruck
Hey Sandy - Yeah Could you explain - please ??‘nn
It should crumple like a normal vehicle.
The dash and then perhaps the steering wheel (yoke) are the two things I dislike about the Cybertruck. I just hate the dash. I really hope they change course on that or at least provide some differing options.
RETIRED 75. Got concealed carry, but don't always carry. Need lockable center console for times like car wash.
Honestly I want bucket seats in the cyber truck and a large console. I understand the function of the third seat but those are rarely ever used
Agreed
Those seats will be comfortable, no doubt. They will be designed for rough travel as well as highway. Plenty of time yet to fine tune the internals before production ramped.
The middle front seat doesn’t need super comfort levels for sure, but it may surprise as this truck will be super roomy inside with the exoskeleton- moreso than even the existing full size trucks I suspect
Yeah but the whole point is the middle seat is unnecessary and from a function standpoint a console makes more sense for most people
Can confirm the digital mirror point and refocusing the eyes…
I have a dashcam mirror for my ioniq to improve rear window visibility (it's split and not very big, and often I haul a lot of equipment, so it's blocked). Quick glances are just not possible with this.
Who else here pre ordered the Tri-motor CyberTruck 🥰 Awesome Video👍🏻😁
Thanks for the British translations, I would have been a bit confused without them!
It seems like the digital mirror could actually be some kind of heads up so would have the distance built in and I guess you could see through it kind of
You can add a aftermarket HUD easily, in a Tesla, they already have kits you can buy
Thumbs up for the freeze frame zoom in
So much useful information in one video. Thank you
Big cup-holder models should come with an onboard urinal and commode seats.
this leather is like, I don't know, made out of a kid or something :D
The storage is really great, you can put a misbehaving child in it. Munro.
kid or 'baby goat' leather is the softest leather out there
I'm sure that the whole dashboard system is a prototype at this point.
"How many buttons do they need!" All of them! :D
Wiper stalk? Sounds kinky.
First truck I drove was my dad's 69 C10. Three on the tree and no power anything. No AC in Texas. Options? AM radio. It had a wonderful simplicity.
I was wondering about those steering wheels. They seem like they'd be very awkward to me as well. I also noticed the roadster has the same one.
That is good tips thanks , for sticking tint it film , it would make it cooler and safer 🐣🌡💔♨️🚼
Love the sense of humor, experience! and history lessons... Subscribed!

They be Rumble Seats what folded up instead of trunks on a coupe'.
Hi Sandy, great Video as always. I really like your RUclips Channel. Have to come by if we can travel again to the US :-)
Thanks for the dashboard explanation.
Elon told Jay Leno the CyberTruk comes as shown.
just add a drain plug and hose out the interior
I owned a 2002 Chevy Silverado 1500 and it was absolutely amazing. But I agree.. now a days... their trucks are laughable
The prototype Cybertruck has no wing mirrors. Has there been any movement by the NTSB to allowing cameras in lieu of wing mirrors?
YES, in Europe and Japan they Already allow Wing Mirrors..
America & Canada are behind however.
Thanks Mark. Yes, I knew that. I’m most interested in the US. I believe the NTSB is the bureaucracy that controls this.
@@tomcain5069 as far as i know they are studying it, so ... give it another 2 years or so ? :p
That steering wheel is temporary. It was stated at the unveiling.
True. He also stated in the video via words that it was illegal so I’m assuming he knows this. Not sure why he didn’t verbally communicate it tho
And then it must have been changed because it's been seen driving around, is now in the Petersen Museum for six days.
BTW. Sandy, isn't the Porsche Taycan calling your name? How about looking over one of those?
As much as I like the look for the compressed-paper marble-looking dash, I suspect that the factory model will not look so simple. I hope I am wrong as I ordered my Cyber Truck on my birthday! Great videos!
Munro a must watch!!!!!!!!!
Munro is actually pretty cool in his younger days.
I love my digital mirror on my Bolt EV, much better view than standard rearview mirror.
I think the Cybertruck interior is a tad too minimalistic. Where are u going to put all your stuff? Also prefer more traditional layout with a screen in front And as you pointed out, the steering wheel is a joke. Or a yoke😁
Loving the fun facts!!
