A relative of my spouse had a job with local government in the Scottish Highlands, and in winter one of his jobs was snowplowing the roads. Began in the mid 50s and retired in the mid 90s. He had years, decades of photos of accumulated snow twice the height of the equipment and even now there are tall poles along both sides of the the roads to help you see where to drive if it’s snowed again and the plots haven’t caught up yet. They started building ski resorts in the 1960s for new wintertime employment. But by the 70s the pictures weren’t as impressive. Only as high as the snowplow or as high as a man. Now it snows about as little as I used to see in central NC in the 1970s. At first no one thought it was so bad, there had been light years now and then. But then every year was a light snowfall year. To be sure, enough still accumulates on the tops of the mountains that they just stay snowy year round. In recent years the summits only technically still have snow, on the north sides and in protected coves lasting just until the littlest bit of snowfall on the peaks happens briefly as early as September. Not year round snowy peaks. Last year the remaining snow was down to one tiny patch, a wheelbarrow load.

Every time I listen to Ren, I realize how poor my memory is and how much of my vocabulary I’ve lost since swallowing pills for decades for my psychiatric condition. I used to have all of those great, perfectly descriptive words available to me right on the tip of my tongue. Not any more 😢
