Got questions about the HTC One M8 for Windows? Got a bone to pick with some of our contentions? Join us today (August 22) on episode 110 of the Pocketnow Weekly, where we'll be answering your questions live on the air at 2pm Eastern! pocketnow.com/2014/08/22/pocketnow-weekly-110-htc-one-m8-for-windows
Pocketnow But still, how much less it can be even if it is not 21 hours? Im sure it is way more than 12 hours like it is on Android M8. And also on Android version, 12 hours is just the stated endurance from HTC, and not an actual test figure. So, what's your call regarding battery duration?
Satwinder Singh on the last video, after some moderate testing Jaime already concluded that the battery life was miles better on windows phone. I think the main reason is that it doesn't allow real-time multitasking; i.e. running tasks on more than one app simultaneously. from what I've noticed, except for a browser page loading, any function on any app pauses when you switch apps.
juffurey that may be part of it, but Android is just an un-optimized power hog. So obviously a REAL mobile OS (AKA, not based on Linux) would be better optimized and less battery draining.
TheRAINMan059 Though not making as big of a difference as windows 8.1 compared to android, in android L project volta is expected to increase android battery life about 30-40%
The chances of the windows app store having the app you are looking for is much slimmer. I found even switching to android from iPhone there were a few apps missing or that came late. But I find the overall look of WP 8.1 much more attractive than kit kat
LOL. Android users are ignorant of whats going on with Windows Phone OS. This argument about apps is outdated. The 300K apps pure quality apps matches the 1.3M android apps with 1M crap apps.
The double tap on the Windows Phone uses up more battery, probably because you do not have to move the phone just tap the screen unlike the Android model. They need to add it on older 8x models since the last major update to GDR3 sometimes the 8x turns itself off instead of turning on when I press the power button.
I'm on AT&T & I love Windows Phone, but there has been a dearth of new NOKIA/MSFT devices for quite some time now, almost a YEAR. I currently have the LG G3 for the camera quality & screen. Michael's review really spoke to me as Android user & a Windows user. Bottom line, I think Ill wait to see what Microsoft releases in a few weeks at IFA. If its PureView & AT&T, that will edge out the out since March M8.
The main problem with the less selling of WP is the lack of Games in apps store, poor updates of famous apps and well ... nobody uses a WP (so people feel a bit...alienated)! I hope that will be soon fixed!!!
As an artist, i like to see things simple, elegant and stilysh and in my opinion that alone makes Windows Phone perfect for me! besides i HATE when people talk about the apps, it's obvious that if u have less users, less chance you have to get a programmer and with that no apps are created, even in a buisness stand point it happens, most of things say "available on google and IOS stores" almost no buisness makes apps for windows phone.
Andre Vitorino From what i can see, Whatsapp is available in the Windows Store and the suggest apps under that were Viber, Line and there seems to be an Instagram app in the store too that looks like the original app in ios and android, these are the most popular apps i think, i'm sure snapchat is probably a deal breaker for so many but to me if the phone has Whatsapp, Instagram, Viber, Twitter and Facebook Messenger then i will use it, the being said i have still kept my BlackBerry Bold 9900 and use it daily haha
3 questions 1-how did you pin the podcasts on the start screen 2-how did you get the untethered from the windows podcast store (because i can't find it ) 3-is the feature to pin a podcast on the start screen from wp 8.1 or is it from an app
Strange, usually he's a bit nicer to windows than this, not that he's mean but he's definitely not as gracious as he usually is. Also what was with that jab at mobile IE? That wasn't necessary, especially since there were no facts around that and that was just his opinion? Google chrome on my laptop and cellphone crashes all the time but whatever, it's still an informative review.
Both Chrome and Safari for Smartphones is miles ahead of IE for WP. I have an Note 3 and an iPhone 5S and never had any problem with those browsers. Both runt smooth.
GuerilleroX Yeah but you didn't mention using IE did you? IE is not the best but is certainly a worthy contender, don't count it out because of the strangely bad reputation that the former versions IE for desktop cloud your judgment.
GuerilleroX I know people who don't use Windows phones have a lot of assumptions or compare it to past generations. Trust me it's not what you think. At first yes it takes a second to get used to it because it's not like the other platforms then you start noticing software wise, picture and video it's more superior than the other two. I have all three and Android and iOS have issues with files and media sharing at times. Windows actually has no issues at all. My daily driver is an Android LG G3 but I think I'm going get this HTC next month
StrickenWithFear I need to stop you right here... I've been using Windows Phone since 2011 and there is no doubt IE is far behind Chrome. Site compatibility is is bad that the new GDR1 update causes IE to masquerade as Android just to get websites to display properly. Even this very site won't even play unembedded videos without asking you to "download an app".
MalicexBadIntent In my experiences with windows phone, I've never had that problem. On my android on the other hand, it slows to a stop and crashes a lot.
finally HTC One M8 is coming to AT&T (Nov.7). ive waited more than a month for the windows version for an upgrade, and im not about to change my mind onto something else now.
Still get the impression that Android is the more fluent, polished O/S by a fair margin. I am impressed by the apparent superior paying time of Windows. Main concern is that I am able to use all the apps I can on Android like Strava, Flipboard, You Tube, weather apps, Wearables, Tablets.
This is one of the best options I've ever seen, Instead of minis and whatever it makes more sense to offer windows or android variants of any given phone, perhaps Samssung can take a lesson here.
Am currently using the One M7, and I am considering getting the M8W, and now after the battery difference, am more intrigued, and yes i know ***** its a spec sheet, but even if it was 25% off, that's still few hours more than the android version. Yet do you think i should wait for the One Max successor?
am i crazy for not wanting the windows version after watching this video JUST because it doesn't have a flashing notification light? i mean how will i know if i have a text when i come back after i leave my phone in my room and go to the bathroom? is there a tone that plays every 10 seconds or something?
i went ahead and got the HTC one M8 windows and mine has a notification light. i really love the phone. its true it doesn't have every app android has but iv been able to find everything that i use to have under different names. the one thing iv been trying to find out is how to turn off the data usage so i don't go over my set amount.
I would rather go for windows phone yes I know the app store is not as big as android or ios but windows store has more quality apps than either of them. Plus most of the apps in ios and android are crap. I am not a huge app junky so windows phone is great for me. Also the ui on windows phone is a lot more smoother and easier to use. I look forward to upgrading to windows phone from android when I am able to.
This might just be me but is anyone else reminded of windows 97 every time they look at windows phone? It just doesn't look very modern to me. Look at the built in remote control on the M8 for example. The Android design looks modern while the black and white windows one looks like DOS.
Hi Michael I have got the HTC One M8 Android version. What I was wondering, with these new Li-ion batteries, is it ok to leave my phone on charge over night for about 8 - 10 hours? And, lastly, if it is ok to charge it overnight, can you do it no matter what the battery percentage is? Many thanks Connor
I'd believe this is going to be one of Windows best sellers since it's in a HTC One M8. Maybe it's time for others like Sony and Samsung to give the Windows community a Z2 Windows phone or a S5 Windows phone. That would make everyone happy
The new android is also coming "L" if i'm not mistaken, witch seems pretty elegant and stylish, i'm considering a chance, since the only thing sepparating the two will be the funcionality.
I love both Windows Phone and Android, but I prefer Windows Phone more. What would be best is to dual boot, so we can have both. Anyways, great comparison Mr. Stark! I love what you did at 3:02. I LOLed!
@CheesyBred its not really their fault, you can compete with a store that needs no reviews for your apps. Or compete with ios which has a consistency among hardware and software that is hard to achieve. I can tell you it's been much better.
PocketNow never disappoints. If this had been released earlier and it came to my country, I'd have switched from HTC to HTC when I got my Lumia earlier this year. Good phone that M8W.
@KhalidAwad WP has not multitasking at least a limited one, major battery saver, plus most games and apps are built for low speced phoned in mind so 801 would not have to spin its wheels a lot, also you can easily turn off background apps through a whole section called battery saver
@StrickenWithFear Most sites are building with Android and iOS webkit in mind so it means running into websites that will look confusing I'd using IE on mobile.
For me there are still not a Windows phone with a 'WOOOOW' factor for me! I am waiting on a small versions of surface pro 3. I would love to see redesigned version of the HTC HTC Advantage X7510. An A6 paper size phone with pen for notes, lightweight, thin bessels and pocket friendly. A real Windows mobile office phone. The HTC you could even extend the screen if you want to work in office on a larger screen.
If you care for the extra features and all the other stuff than android but if you use the phone for things such as email and other things then the windows version is better. Also that long long batter life. Is this the smartphone with the longest battery life now?
A friend of mine got an M8 android for her first smartphone after I told her all about android and Windows Phone (suggesting that WP would be simpler and more efficient to use). She regrets getting the android variant. Is there a known way to install WP8/8.1 onto the M8? I mean the legit OS, and not some knock-off app that supposedly emulates the experience.
i'd google it see if theres a rom or file to flash after unlocking the bootloader but if there is a way it will require some know how to ROOT, UNLOCK BOOTLOADERS ON HTC DEVICES, USE FASTBOOT COMMANDS, FLASH RUU FILES, FLASH RECOVERY FILES AND USE RECOVERY i do think there was a way i remember reading or it was just a possibility but look into it it may seem like allot but if you follow guides its
I use a Pantech breakout running android 2.3 with a Windows phone launcher because I prefer androids app store and but like the feel of microsoft. But then again, my laptop runs android 4.4 x86 with an xp launcher (had xp when I got it, Microsoft stopped support, I switched over)
I know I made a good decision not rushing out to buy Lumia 930. Sure the camera is 4mp only but then it's just minor annoyance to what M8 hardware offer.
Although I'm an avid iPhone user, I'm hoping that Windows Phone becomes more popular. I love the OS, although I doubt I'll switch any time soon. It's great for competition - having three big OS's in the mobile phone world would be great and be better for us all.
I love windows Phone. Currently, I am using Nokia 1520. After see this video, i am happy to be a windows phone user. About the battery life, i am totally impressed with windows phone.
I guess you never heard of Here Drive and Here Maps which has more accurate info then any other map service I have used. Or how about GMaps which uses Google Maps on Windows Phone. Oh tisk tisk, I guess we don't keep up with the times.
Windows in my head is actually really cool they have some good products for a good price only problem is that they have a very small niche and still lack major support for developers if it was for that I feel like windows would be able to compete better with Google and apple but at last I fear they joined to late in the game
Łukasz Trojniak It's only laggy if you go for shit $20 phones. Buy an Android that's worth more than your life and you won't experience any lag whatsoever...
I just bought an m8 (android) whether its windows or android it doesn't matter this phone is so exclusive I do not see how a person could choose something like the s5 when you out them together unless they're a complete dufus and go "oh galaxy I must get the next one"
Sorry but you do still have some preoccupation about Windows Phone (just because perhaps you're not using it LONG enough), in terms of using Google services on WP, and web-surfing with IE (did you mention it renders webkit-based code now for websites?). This is a good review but again, you're trying to judging everything of WP from an Android point of view, which makes sense but who says what Android does is supposed to be what a phone should be like?
I would go for the m8 on android because I play more games and use more google services. I love one drive on my iPhone 5 for storage saving. Helps a lot.
I’m strictly iPhone but i wanted to try out android one time when I had a free upgrade so I got this phone and it was the best android phone in my opinion I eventually went back to iPhone but I still miss this phone it was sooo good with the dot view case I just wish I enjoyed android more if I was to ever go back it would be a pixel for sure
Windows phone is getting there, slowly. I still do not under stand what is taking WP to get the app's. Why is giving them such a hard time? The app makers not getting the money like they do from apple and google?? Really I'm asking I have no idea why is WP having such a problem with apps?
Yeah man..i used to own w.p and i really regret it..lack of apps and really frustrating..such a waste of my money..i only use it more less 6month only..thnkgod now i there's a many decent specs with mid range price android..and i chose nexus 5..now im happily with it..
I totaly love the whay that HTC handled this phone. I think it's awesome if more OEMs tackle the OS problem like this. Just make the same phone and let the customers decide the OS. The only improvement whould be if you can change the OS if you want to. :P
6 years later I still miss windows mobile
I miss windows phone and lumia so damn much 😢

wow... you really did not mention about the lack of a dedicated camera button?
They should make htc iOS now that will be cheaper than regular iPhones. Which are like almost 1000 dollars
Dang.... windows OS lasting 21 hours on the m8 made me change the way I thought of it
Khalid Awad Remember, that's stated/projected endurance from HTC's spec sheet, not an actual test figure. ^M
Pocketnow But still, how much less it can be even if it is not 21 hours? Im sure it is way more than 12 hours like it is on Android M8. And also on Android version, 12 hours is just the stated endurance from HTC, and not an actual test figure.

Lmao... dat a$$!! :D
lmao I logged in just to upvote that
I would buy windows phone in a heartbeat if it had better app support

never gonna happen.. :p
Keep dreaming :)
That would suck.
IOS is awful
Edward Martinez Beyond awful.
6:04 WTF is that ad on the phone on the left ??
ik i noticed that too
wish htc just did a totally different designed windows phone just like the htc8x

They say, light moves faster than sound. But this video seems to have some sync issues going.
Would have loved a speed test between the two, like a browser speed test
you can customize any wall paper in the windows version as well..

The main problem with the less selling of WP is the lack of Games in apps store, poor updates of famous apps and well ... nobody uses a WP (so people feel a bit...alienated)! I hope that will be soon fixed!!!
There are a lot of games in the app store.
Da Foo Ya but not enough to bridge the app gap. Some devs even forget that there is a third platform!
Thanks Michael and great seeing you in a video again! Good for HTC trying M8 with Windows. Enjoying my M7 and M8 Android...
Why do the pictures look better on the m8 for windows phone?
As an artist, i like to see things simple, elegant and stilysh and in my opinion that alone makes Windows Phone perfect for me! besides i HATE when people talk about the apps, it's obvious that if u have less users, less chance you have to get a programmer and with that no apps are created, even in a buisness stand point it happens, most of things say "available on google and IOS stores" almost no buisness makes apps for windows phone.

Crossing fingers will devs port windows to the android version or the opposite.
I wonder if Android 5.0 will improve battery life significantly on the Android version?
3 questions
1-how did you pin the podcasts on the start screen
2-how did you get the untethered from the windows podcast store (because i can't find it )
3-is the feature to pin a podcast on the start screen from wp 8.1 or is it from an app
Strange, usually he's a bit nicer to windows than this, not that he's mean but he's definitely not as gracious as he usually is. Also what was with that jab at mobile IE? Both Chrome and Safari for Smartphones is miles ahead of IE for WP. I have an Note 3 and an iPhone 5S and never had any problem with those browsers. Both runt smooth.
GuerilleroX Yeah but you didn't mention using IE did you? IE is not the best but is certainly a worthy contender, don't count it out because of the strangely bad reputation that the former versions IE for desktop cloud your judgment.
GuerilleroX I know people who don't use Windows phones have a lot of assumptions or compare it to past generations. Trust me it's not what you think. At first yes it takes a second to get used to it because it's not like the other platforms then you start noticing software wise, picture and video it's more superior than the other two. what is the app they use at 2:08?
finally HTC One M8 is coming to AT&T (Nov.7). ive waited more than a month for the windows version for an upgrade, and im not about to change my mind onto something else now.
As regards the weight of the two OS? I know that WP takes up much less than ANDROID. So there is also a gain in memory, isn't it?
What is that notification bubble on the android m8?
What is the bubble notification app on the android m8??
Still get the impression that Android is the more fluent, polished O/S by a fair margin. I am impressed by the apparent superior paying time of Windows. Main concern is that I am able to use all the apps I can on Android like Strava, Flipboard, You Tube, weather apps, Wearables, Tablets.
When it comes to review or comparison between two devices/flat form Michael rocks.
So do you think we will get a dual boot option with root?
2:59 He had a chance and he took it.
The battery life thing will be very interesting. Initial impression by other reviewers put the Windows version far ahead of the Android version.
This is one of the best options I've ever seen, Instead of minis and whatever it makes more sense to offer windows or android variants of any given phone, perhaps Samssung can take a lesson here.
I liked Windows Phones better when they had hardware keys and camera buttons as standard, it was one of their few USPs.
Pocketnow, I can't wait for you guys to review the M8 for Windows.
Does the HTC One (M8) support XLTE as well?
@xShadow what do you mean by "if you're a true mobile fan"? I don't think Google and Android are the pioneers of mobile...
What's next? An S5 Windows Phone?
the Samsung Ativ S looks like a Galaxy s4.. but it Works on Windows phone. But Samsungs with Windows phone.. never really Works..
even though the phone is over a year old, would this be a good phone to get? I'd get the Windows version switching from a lumia 1020
Now, I am longing for Nokia Lumia 930 (or Icon) for Android...
Am currently using the One M7, and I am considering getting the M8W, and now after the battery difference, am more intrigued, and yes i know ***** its a spec sheet, but even if it was 25% off, that's still few hours more than the android version.

oh yah and also the not having as many app's as android. that's a huge turn off.
Windows 10 coming this year is going to make use of LED notifications
i went ahead and got the HTC one M8 windows and mine has a notification light. i really love the phone. its true it doesn't have every app android has but iv been able to find everything that i use to have under different names. the one thing iv been trying to find out is how to turn off the data usage so i don't go over my set amount.

Its funny, because Michael says the exact opposite about the availability of apps and the quality of WP apps than you, in this video.
0M9H4X well he used the Lumia 1020 as his daily driver for a very long time actually.
***** lol what. Android is the most unstable OS out there with those hardware fragmentation.
monlosez3 those on this thread are specifically talking about apps, not an OS war.
Really insight side by side comparison of the two HTC One M8s. Hopefully the WP8.1 won't be a Verizon exclusive for too long...
This might just be me but is anyone else reminded of windows 97 every time they look at windows phone? It just doesn't look very modern to me. Look at the built in remote control on the M8 for example. The Android design looks modern while the black and white windows one looks like DOS.

Poketshow can you made again when windwos phone comes back?
Hi Michael I have got the HTC One M8 Android version.
What I was wondering, with these new Li-ion batteries, is it ok to leave my phone on charge over night for about 8 - 10 hours?
And, lastly, if it is ok to charge it overnight, can you do it no matter what the battery percentage is?
Many thanks
Connor
I'd believe this is going to be one of Windows best sellers since it's in a HTC One M8.

Anyways, great comparison Mr. Stark! I love what you did at 3:02. I LOLed!
@CheesyBred its not really their fault, you can compete with a store that needs no reviews for your apps.

Where can I get it in Germany?
I'm fine with Windows Phone OS, my only complaint is the fact that its app store is horrendous.
For me there are still not a Windows phone with a 'WOOOOW' factor for me! I am waiting on a small versions of surface pro 3. I would love to see redesigned version of the HTC HTC Advantage X7510. If you care for the extra features and all the other stuff than android but if you use the phone for things such as email and other things then the windows version is better. Also that long long batter life. Is this the smartphone with the longest battery life now?
Does this android version come with Cortana? If not, what is theirs called?
Google now
What about the ultra power saving mode? Is that in the M8 for windows too or nahh?
Isn't that for the S5 not M8?
The M8 has its own version of that its called like Super Power Save Mode or Ultra Power Save Mode something like that
Moises Alonzo Link?

rizevnarastek Thanks. Was considering the S5 but now will probably get the M8 most likely.
Hi guys my phone Htc One m8 for Windows
Android system install ?
Of course, if you prefer more battery duration and higher performance, will opt for Windows Phone.
@Zizi Mugen Try the Window Phone Central forums I've seen people there talking about doing just that.
Speed comparasion, please?
A friend of mine got an M8 android for her first smartphone after I told her all about android and Windows Phone (suggesting that WP would be simpler and more efficient to use). She regrets getting the android variant. Is there a known way to install WP8/8.1 onto the M8? I mean the legit OS, and not some knock-off app that supposedly emulates the experience.
No

I've tried that, Peter, but it didn't seem to pull up any information. Thanks for the constructive suggestion though.
Dude, don't get her the WP HTC.
Stick with Android! :)
HeyImLarry Someone's mad. :/
And I'm not a fanboy of Android you know? I just like it and also I have a life, unlike you. ;)
Good day.
I use a Pantech breakout running android 2.3 with a Windows phone launcher because I prefer androids app store and but like the feel of microsoft. But then again, my laptop runs android 4.4 x86 with an xp launcher (had xp when I got it, Microsoft stopped support, I switched over)
You are the best reviewer from PockeNow :)
solid review again, Michael!!! hope you review the upcoming Note 4
Great review, as always. Pocketnow has great reviews, and is never bias.
3:01 "Other contrasts are more Stark" That made me laugh a bit more than it should have
Surely you could root the m8 android and flash a windows phone rom ? To get best of both worlds !
Is it wise to upgrade from my Lumia 920 to HTC One M8 WP? I kind of getting tired of the Lumia (great phone though)
*I'm
aleba163 Smash that shit and get an Android.
+ThaBalla79™ Lagdroid is shit
Łukasz Trojniak It's only laggy if you go for shit $20 phones. Buy an Android that's worth more than your life and you won't experience any lag whatsoever...
Man that phone looks sweet, I've spent so long on android that I switched to ios this year... But now I regretting not giving windows phone a shot =(
Really nice comparison M. Thanks a lot!
Windows phones were so much easier on the eye
Michael Fisher, the best tech-narrator ever! :-D
I would go for the m8 on android because I play more games and use more google services. I love one drive on my iPhone 5 for storage saving. Helps a lot.
I miss windows phone 😩
Is it just me or is there too many phones to choose from lol?
One of the things I love about Apple and their simplicity !
Looks smart and unique, if you like the M8 and know about Windows Phone then this might be for you. Smart and unique if you ask me...
can u take the battery out of any of theses phones?
No
Windows phone is getting there, slowly. I still do not under stand what is taking WP to get the app's. Why is giving them such a hard time? The app makers not getting the money like they do from apple and google?? Really I'm asking I have no idea why is WP having such a problem with apps?
HTC One M8 for Windows - Amazing!
how to hard reset htc one m8 for windows
Great video and great last Minute wrap up !
Michael Fisher, I live slightly in the future... and I can hear you just before you speak. :)
Get the android one trust me I have a windows phone you'll regret it if you don't
exactly my thoughts
***** This is HTC we're talking about not lag-laden Korean plastic crap.
Kind if depends on which lumia phone you get tho cause I have a 520 and it's not that bad but the windows store is a bit pitiful if I'm honest
Yeah man..i used to own w.p and i really regret it..lack of apps and really frustrating..such a waste of my money..i only use it more less 6month only..thnkgod now i there's a many decent specs with mid range price android..and i chose nexus 5..now im happily with it..
***** So you're saying that mid range android with their own apps each brands are lagging even with snapdragon quad core chipsets on mid range price?
I totaly love the whay that HTC handled this phone. I think it's awesome if more OEMs tackle the OS problem like this. Just make the same phone and let the customers decide the OS. The only improvement whould be if you can change the OS if you want to. :P
Very nice video, i am impressed with battery life in the m8 for Windows.
