  • Extremely Close by Daniela Candillari
(Composed for NYC Ballet Bass Trombonist Nick Schwartz)
    Performed by:
    Luke Sieve, bass trombone
    Forrest Howell, piano
This piece is based on the novel “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” by Jonathan Safran Foer. The novel’s story follows Oskar Schell, a young boy in New York City who lost his father to the attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Oskar’s story is that of a child learning the painful reality of grief- that it is a journey with no linear progression, and therefore, no clear end to the suffering- far too young. Daniela Candillari has written one of the most deeply moving works for this pairing of instruments, one that I think captures not only Oskar’s story, but the universality of grief, especially in the wake of this devastating tragedy, perfectly. We offer this recording today, on the 22nd anniversary of the devastating attacks, in memory of all those who lost their lives and in solidarity with all who still grieve.
Performed live at Music Academy, Summer of 2023, as part of the Duo Competition final round.
Special thanks to Ms. Candillari for so generously sharing her artistry with us while at the academy this summer.
