Personally, I think the politics is far, far worse than the cookie-cutter nature of their films. If I like something, I'll watch it again, but I can't stand the political cancer.

I had an ultra-leftist, self proclaimed communist, social studies teacher in high school. This teacher would proudly proclaim to the class that “her daughters were not allowed to watch Disney movies because they are anti-feminist”. This was in 2003 so we all thought she was crazy; who knew that in 20 years time that Disney would be making films that only appealed to people like my liberal history teacher.

I barely remember the movie, but I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt like this. It's being treated like it's just a scene that happens and can be cut, but I don't remember it being that way at all.

Disney used to be a place you could dream and escape through fantasy. now they are set in reality. Who wants to think about politics when they are escaping? We want to get away from all that for a few hours. We want to look back at our childhood movies and reminisce at the simpler times. They’ve ruined it. And now we just feel contempt towards them.
Disney has forgotten how to entertain people because they have focused on their woke political agenda too much. Disney used to teach what were, at the time, nearly universal life lessons like don't lie, don't cheat, be kind to others, etc. Now they are sending messages that are not universally accepted and many just find it insulting to pay for something you hoped would be entertaining and uplifting only to be lectured to and chastised instead.
I am no longer a fan of Disney. Even though I am down with people being who they want to be. The stories re more about following trends and reaching a certain social equity score, rather than entertainment.

I will never forgive Disney for how they butchered the ENTIRE Star Wars Expanded Universe. All the lore, all the hard work of hundreds of devoted artists just cast to the wayside. It was as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced.

Charlotte's web was one of the most powerful movies I saw as a child. Removing the 'hard to watch' scenes from Bambi just makes it worthless. Disney seem to be fine with sending SJW politics through their movies, but stumble when it comes to the real life lessons that we all can learn, regardless of our political affiliations.

You see, getting kids into contact with concepts such as grief is somewhat important... However it is also very depressing!
How about we shift the focus to showing the kids that even when the light dims, they have it within themselves to light up the void! How are they Marxist though? As far as I know none of their content has been anti-capitalist or pro-socialist, just riddled with identity politics. And sure, that's of course part of an ideology but I don't think it's enough to pinpoint any one direction. To me it has seemed much more extreme _capitalist_ to try and squeeze as much profits from as many avenues as possible as quickly as possible. They've fortunately for us of course failed to make the profits but not in a way that feels like it was planned to fail.

As someone who grew up on movies like Mulan, Hercules, Hunchback, Beauty and the Beast, and more, it makes me said those pioneer in animation is now a soulless company that doesn’t care about telling that many good stories anymore.
We were truly spoiled in the 90s. Disney, Nickleodeon, Cartoon Network, Pixar, Kids WB. I swear I could live 50 lifetimes in the 90s and still not have done everything I wanted to, and to me that's a good thing. Unlike the modern stuff where I can't even think of a movie that's coming out because it's all so bad.
Now the only thing they care about is indoctrinating children...
FernGully, Fox and The Hound, Robin Hood( with the Fox and animal characters), and The Little Mermaid were all movies I would watch today and enjoy.
Beauty and The Beast had amazing songs and is also something I would enjoy even as an adult. These are examples of how timeless the creativity was back then.
EDIT: I just checked and FernGully(1992) was going to be released by Disney but it was released with 20th Century Fox. Still my favorite movie as a kid! I just watched the trailer and it’s hilarious, and Aladdin! I forgot to mention Robin Williams was both the voice of the Merchant and Genie. Good Memories being a 90s kid

Great analysis. There are no inspirational comic creators anymore at Stan Lee's caliber, and the result is carbon copies of old successes. Bambi's mother's death and Mufasa's death are events that teach children empathy and the importance of parents. Wonder why Disney would want to remove that? hmmm
What? There are so many good comics out there and every year new very good comics are released. Woman of Tomorrow, Wonder Woman Historia or Riddler Year One to just name a few in the superhero genre. But there just so much more good stuff thats not superhero stuff.

Your comparison of Disney to a cockroach is quite apt in a number of respects. As well as being survivors, they also are vectors for a number of diseases brought into homes, as well as leaving their waste everywhere. The cockroaches do that too.

I think one of Disney's problems is that they acquired franchises and fan bases that they don't understand and then try to mold them into something they're not.
Disney: "We are Borg Disney. Resistance is irrelevant. We will add your distinctive culture to our own, stripping it of what makes it good, and replace it with our own reality." :(
They bought these and other franchises for no other reason than to deliberately destroy them while pushing their various agendas. And probably laundering vast amounts of money through "expensive" films.
All the while the company is being bankrupted so it can be sold to Steve Job's foul fruit or Blackstone or the likes for a minimum. Yeah, it's about yard sale time.

If a company owns Star Wars, Marvel, and Snow White and cannot retain the fans and be successful they have lost the plot and direction. They are deluded in their thinking and only have themselves to blame
When their business was kids movies and bunches of direct-to-video sequels, they had more predictability. Star Wars and Marvel had established fans who would pore over the law and consume faithfully, but I'm not sure you can make everyone a nerd. If you're spending hundreds of millions of dollars per tv show or film, you have to hit a mainstream audience - where adults are hopefully more critical. Mainstream audiences were assumed to go through phases. A lot of genres would burn themselves out after a few years. The zeitgeist moves on. Then you add in the streaming service and investors. They don't have the option of retreating and seeing what the next fad is going to be.

It seems like Hollywood has slowly lost the ability to produce anything worth watching. A trend that has drastically accelerated over the last ten years.
The problem is the money men who run the studios don't know or understand the franchises they buy; and the writers they employ are ideological hacks who butcher the source material in the misbelief that dressing up their propaganda in a familiar costume will give them an avenue to brainwash the masses.
Because its all about politically dictating new generations to complicated weakness and less simply sharing a good story with healthy development in entertainment anymore.
So much to the point of it becoming increasingly popular to turn to animated entertainment from other countries!

with companies like blackrock funneling amounts of money that no customer base could ever live up to. companies are effectively driven by greed to accept that. all they have to do to get this money is continueously push out progressive propaganda wether there is an audience for it or not.
then these giant investement firms give them money for pushing the line using their platform, audiences get garbage and fall off and eventually once the platform is destroyed due to this process the investors move on to the next platform to destroy using this. this has affected almost all levels of entertainment, from movies, to cartoons to gaming, board and card games.
Hollywood has forgotten the lesson of the late 60's/mid 70's "message movies" which tried to push a number of social messages...all of which were box office bombs. Fifty some years later they started doing it again...and they've been box office bombs.
I am 37, I grew up watching disney movies and tv series. I remember waiting the whole week for Saturday morning to watch Chip and Dale, Aladdin, The Gummy Bears, The Little Mermaid etc. My kinds will NOT grow up watching the new Disney animated movies and films but I guess we will re-watch the old ones together.
The thing that helped Disney from its slump in the 80’s was its renaissance in the 90’s and home video sales of older properties same with DVDs in the 00’s and to a lesser degree to 3D blu rays in the early 2010’s. But with streaming there’s no extra wind or breath after a film goes out of theaters it’s just digital noise with everything else.

One thing about Disney+ that I don't understand: why couldn't they just put up all the old cartoons from Mickey, Donald, Pluto, etc? They have this massive amount of content and the first time I opened Disney+ I was certain these things were there, but they were nowhere to be found. Just a few episodes here and there.
This especially. I was so looking forward to seeing the heaps of stuff that has never broadcasted in my country but it wasn't there.

It wasn't as good as the original trilogy, but I could have lived with The Force Awakens being carried through. But them switching directors completely ruined any chance that had of working.
Although they brought Abrams back for Episode 9 and he clown showed that one into oblivion (beyond even what was required to recover from TLJ), so it may have been doomed from the start and VII was just a fluke.

I saw the trailers for TFA back when it "Coming soon" and was very apprehensive....I was really concerned they were going to "Disney princess" the whole S/W universe. I never bothered to see the movie until a few years later, and even then, I fell asleep midway in and never bothered to finish it. I stopped there and never saw Ep 8 or 9, and yet TFA was supposed to be the "good one" in the sequel trilogy. Even now, in 2023, I haven't watched those movies, but I did try Ahsoka, and my God the writing is abysmal. Truly, Star Wars is dead.
I'm a Walt Disney fanatic. I grew up with the first Mouseketters and fell in love with Annette. What most bothers me is how feminists have trashed Aurora. She is hardly mentioned anymore. It's become a crime for a female to be feminine. Disney's parade of princess bosses leaves me cold.

I love Aurora and I honestly think that she's one of the princesses that could have benefitted most from a reboot imo. In her og movie, she is a passive protagonist who gets taken out in the final act. I would have loved to see her get a movie where we learn more about her, she gets a more active role, we see more of her and prince Philip interacting, etc.
But instead we got that stupid Maleficent movie that focused on making the pure evil villain of the og into the hero. Disney really doesn't know what potential is smh.

@@Dart_Feld I do believe that trying to analyze a movie that's more than 60 years old, which is based on a story older than that, based on today's "standards", is pretty dumb. However, all this accusations seem pretty hateful and nonsensical at the same time. I do believe that sleeping beauty is better storytelling than some of the movies today (still pretty bland for Disney's cassics standard imo), but I don't think any "woke" person give the movie that much thought (aside from actors and people on the film industry, whose work sometimes include commenting on such movies)
I try, in my mind, to separate the beloved Disney of my childhood from the nightmare train wreck that it has become. It's how I can still enjoy the nostalgia.
It's pretty easy to do. I watch Lady and the Tramp because that's real Disney. I will not be watching the live action Snow White because it's not real Disney.
I'm not sure how this is possible but you have captured nearly every emotion and thought that I've had about the decline of Disney over the recent years and why as a parent that's almost 50 years old I will not allow my children to watch any of the Disney catalog of the new titles without my first previewing it

I get that the death of Bambi’s mother is sad, but that’s the reality of death. There are many kids that unfortunately lose their parents at that young age & trying to sweep that under the rug & pretend like it doesn’t happen is not going to change that fact.
I'm almost 25 with older parents who are 65 and I dread the day when I'll lose them....but I know that it WILL happen eventually. Pretending something doesn't exist won't make it disappear. You can't raise kids who have no idea how the real world works. A bit off track here but I'm currently re-reading Pet Sematary and Rachell's approach to her daughter Ellie discovering that all alive things will one day inevitably die actually pissed me off soo much. I know she had past trauma but that doesn't mean you can nor should shelter the kids. Kids are kids but they won't be kids forever. And it's easier to teach them different things, values and appropriate behavior when they're still at a younger age cuz they still don't have much of an attitude yet, they aren't into their "rebel phase" and they're still "tabula rasa" - a clean slate so they'll absorb much more without being prejudiced about stuff. I'd definitely show the original Bambi to my little niece and nephew and would do so to my kids as well (when I have any) and I see nothing wrong with that. And would make sure that they avoid 99% of the Disney live actions like the plague.

I'm kind of confused by the phrasing of this but that's not how it works no matter how much you tell yourself that. A Studio could not run in profit if it produced something no one wants to see and an audience will definetly tell you if they don't have interest by simply not caring enough to watch.
The audience single handedly decides the movie culture and at the moment they want to see IPs, Remakes, sequels with a touch of diversity here and there. I get that you don't like that but unfortunately a lot of people do watch all of that. No one bothers to watch original projects anymore which makes it such a difficult time for original ideas.

You can look at any viewership metrics you want anywhere in Hollywood, from the Nielsen Ratings to the ratings individual streaming platforms provide for their own content to any other and see the massive decline in viewership for most content, especially the woke stuff. You see, the studios are simply no longer profitable. Disney itself is still profitable mind you, as they own a whole lot of other things like National Geographic, ESPN, etc, and those still make some profits but even almighty Disney is in a massive negative growth, as in they're earning less and less profits with every passing quarter(3 month period mind you).
Disney movies and TV shows haven't made money in a while now, barring a handful of examples, so they had plenty of time to change course if they wanted to, which they haven't until recently. It's only now they're finally beginning to wake up and try to course correct. Too little too late but Disney is still big enough and owns enough other ventures to keep them above water for this course correction to be a possibility.
If I were Disney, instead of trying to double dip into beloved classics by "reimagining" them, I would go for the ones that had good bones but flopped and ACTUALLY reimagine them.
Still waiting on that Treasure Planet remake.

Part of the stagnation in movie production is that almost all of the big studies are consolidating into one large conglomeration. Innovation has been completely stifled.

I am an older person with adult kids. I showed my kids Bambi and Snow White and Sleeping Beauty, etc.
We enjoyed the movies together and talked about them, which gave me as a parent wonderful conversations with my children and the opportunity to answer their questions. We were sad that Bambi’s mom was killed, but we talked about it and the fact that Bambi learned from his dad and survived through his own bravery the perils he faced. Modern Disney is annoying.

This assumes that they have a limited number of people, but they really don’t and that they must restrict the capital for each one. The fact was that each movie and show had bloated budgets. Disney has almost a quarter million employees, not to mention subcontractors and people contracted just for the movie. With these resources they can easily create dozens of movies/shows.

The last time Disney was on the rocks, the "Black Cauldron" era, they were at least still trying new things, and even the flops were testing new directions, and innovating, and telling timeless stories with good role models, lessons, messages, and morals. They made things that people are fans of. Now...now they're just acquiring and iterating. They make "content" now. And they've turned to divisive politics, moralizing, and messaging. I'm a 70's baby. I saw the original Star Wars trilogy in theater's. I went to Disneyland many times growing up and was able to take my wife and kids when they were younger. The thing is with things like Disney, the love for this company is passed down from generations. When they killed Star Wars those parents stopped loving it and in turn didn't pass that love to their kids. My kids don't give a crap about Disney and it's because I don't give a crap about Disney anymore. They've essentially lost a generation of kids. The magic is dead and they can't just get it back. Disney is just another big corporation trying to tell us what to believe and how to feel. I'm loving what's happening to them and hope it continues until they are gone. Good riddance.

Disney struggled financially for many decades until the late 80’s. Some of their worst mistakes were devaluing their own creative work by means of poor secondary films. But they had strong investing into other properties and they had theme parks. Those investments kept them afloat.
The single thread that has kept them going though was Nostalgia.
Their theme parks and disney channel as well as their VHS, DVD ect “vault” released had a possibly unintended but brilliant affect of creating lifelong consumers.
Consumers who shared their love with their children and their children’s children. Nostalgia is funny that way. We grow to love something and we want to share those intangible moments with our children and loved ones. Disney has been great with that, Disneyland and Disneyworld provide a means for us to shared moments and memories. Their use of creative licensing and branding of various products has also allowed their IP’s to be shared and modernized effectively in fashion ect ect. Younger generations today may not know or watch Cinderella, but they may love a cute backpack with the characters on it. And over time those types of inroads have a lasting effect.
The problem with Disney is that it has been biting people for at least a decade now that do not love their properties. These people tend to be ego centric and want to create self insert characters who are typically one dimensional as is their plots.

Just given their biggest properties to these people and it’s taken peoples love of nostalgia in nearly every form and shipwrecked them. The result has been the opposite of the last workings of Disney nostalgia.
Rather than having people want to shared their love of special memories (tied to various content) with their kids, they now move to newer properties and enjoy them instead. But even worse, Disney has always relied on their theme parks to save them from poor film choices. And that has only accelerated in the last 7 years or so. Now, post Covid, you have a world where they charge an exorbitant fee to take your kids to the park and you have poor films. Aside from some creative licensing choices for merch, they don’t have much of a generational appeal and it’s showing in lower theme park attendance and people moving away from Disney brands, in consumption of movies and especially toys.
Disney only had one option. They will continue to raise theme park pricing and gouge their current consumers until even those fans realize that they have a better value attending other parks or even (gasp) just going on regular family vacations.
If you were to price a current family’s vacation for 4, for 4 days at Disneyland, with hotel, you would spend $3250 for hotel and tickets. That’s not including food, transpiration, parking, and merch. Which would easily end up around $5k.
Now, looking at four to five days vacation. Would you rather spend $5k at a theme park or take your family to Hawaii or France or Japan or a cruise?
Disney has simply lost its ability to be a value proposition anymore.
So if you essentially drive off your hardcore fans, and you drive away the parents by ruining their favorite properties they grew up with, what is left to appeal to the younger generations?
Maybe Disney will be the new “playboy” a brand that is only known for its logo and what it represented, but is essentially just a dead property that has passed its creative prime and meaning.

Last summer, I started watched the Star Wars saga with my 5 year old son as I was hoping to share a common interest with him. I loved Star Wars growing up and was a big Star Wars nerd.
We watched it chronologically starting with Ep 4. By the time Luke had completed the hero’s journey and saved his father in RotJ, he was fully invested. He loved Luke and looked up to his character. He wanted to fully immerse himself in the Star Wars universe. We watched the prequels next, which were fine. We continued immersing ourselves in George Lucas’ world. We bought toys, books, Lego, lightsabers. Then we watched Disney Star Wars. As a 5 year old, he seemed to have found the movies very off putting and upsetting. Han and Luke were not the characters he knew. He was upset when they died pointlessly. And he did not care for the new characters one bit. As soon as Ep 9 was done, he was not interested Star Wars anymore. His love for Star Wars vanished immediately after watching the crap that Disney and Kathleen Kennedy sharted out. He then moved onto Pokemon, Ninjago, and other non Disney properties.
His response to Disney Star Wars is an accurate reflection of the job Disney is doing to all their properties. They are a completely incompetent and ideologically possessed company. And as we can see, the market will eventually leave them in the rear view mirror while they continue screaming into the sky about feminism and diversity.
The worst part about all this? All that wasted money I spent on Star Wars toys which are now sitting in a box in the basement.

The ONLY "political messaging" in any story medium I've ever actually cared about was in the X-Men, with the Mutants just wanting to live in peace and acceptance. This new "messaging" is absolutely unwarranted and should have never been allowed to take root. There are a lot of stories that teach good themes. The problem is they are all in your face about it these days. I mean even the old "have you tried not being a mutant? " From a nervous Mom In X-men 2 was alluding to trying not to be a homosexual. The X men came out during the civil rights movement. I think Storm may be one of the first, if not thee first black female superhero in comic book history.
X-men situation is also very nuanced, like in one comix there was the one kid that awakened the power to literally disintegrate all life in like a 10km radius or something like that , just one day in the morning his power awakenes and his whole town goes poof, people have VERY GOOD reasons to want mutants exterminated , its not an unwaranted fear, so its not like you cant sympathize with the human side.

I grew up with Disney. I remember as a small boy the scene in Bambi when his mother got killed I cried but my mom said everything dies and one day you will, too. I think Bambi helped me to deal with loss of loved one and pets. If she were alive today she’d disown Disney. I’m sure Walt is spinning in his grave.

It's so sad. My family lived in Orlando, Florida when I was a kid, so my life was entrenched in the movies, shows, and the parks. After moving away, I went to Disney World for a 10 day vacation with my friends right after graduating high school in 2004, and it left such a positive impression that I dreamed of going back and re-living those magical moments as an adult. Now, however, the parks are SO DAMN EXPENSIVE, and the entire culture has changed into something I no longer enjoy. I guess I'll always have the memories 😔

My kids lost interest in Star Wars and Marvel after recent releases. Imagine making movies so trashy that even the least demanding audience turns their backs on them. And even some of their most known actors don’t want to work with them anymore. I find it very telling.

I personally didn’t feel the need to watch the conclusion to a troop of characters that, though endearing, weren’t the main focus of the franchise anyway. Furthermore, the director left promptly after finishing guardians 3 and works for the opposition now. The movie, no matter how good it is, isn’t pivotal at all.

My children lost their mother when they were five years old (twins). I thought Disney were keen on children seeing them selves on screen. If they remove this part my children will not have that aspect of their lives portrayed . They will not have the messaging on the fact that this is a fact of life and it happens. @@PChazman1 Because, I have used metal mesh fly swatters successfully on several kinds of cockroaches over the years. My brother-in-law suggested this tool, and a solid hit from a fly swatter will do the job.
If you watch an old Disney movie, even a 2nd tier one like The Unforgettable Journey or Pinocchio, you will be shocked to see how much has changed. I have 3 kids and I basically don't watch anything made in the past 10 years by this studio.
You can be absolutely sure about ohne thing: Bambi's Mom, with the brown fur, will be shot by a white hunter.
I had a baby blanket that had a young deer on it, according to my mom, before I could talk, I'd call it my "B". I carried that thing everywhere until I was probably 8. I called it my "bambi blanket" by the time I could actually talk.
I actually just found it for the first time in about 20 years.
Anyway, as you might expect, Bambi has a special place in my heart, even if it isn't because of the movie itself.
Disney's best products were when Walt was alive. Disney now is now remaking their classics and acquiring new franchises that nobody really cares about in an attempt to stay relevant.
Id say most of their quality content died after the 2010s. Anything before 2009 was great. Not all but mostly great. But best of all, little to no political pandering and preaching wokeness.
It's strange because Disney used to be fiercely concerned about not over-saturating its market. Remember the 'Disney Vault'? In the age before the internet, they would just lock away their movies so that you couldn't see them unless you already owned the VHS or DVD.

For a company that rocketed to fame on children's stories, they've forgotten a lot of the lessons those stories teach. The Goose That Laid the Golden Eggs comes to mind in particular.
I worked at Disneyland in the 80s when i was in college. It was awesome. One of the perks was free admission and I could bring 3 people. Needless to say, thats where I took first dates, hehe. I last went to Disneyland in 08 with my second wife, and for two days admission to both parks, Disneyland and California Adventures, it cost us about $400. Just admission. Now, i wont spend a penny on ANYTHING Disney.
We have millennial friends that spend $8K to $12K for a five-day trip to Dizney with their kids. Every two years. I want to shake them until their eyeballs rattle.

That being said, I stopped going to the parks or supporting Disney about 10yrs ago. I could see the writing on the wall over 20yrs ago...Disney had lost its original concept and had become a HUGE scary corp in it for no one else but their own benefit...and cluelessly so. Many of us weren't comfortable with the large Corp aspect, but the company was still staying faithful to the fans so we maintained support, (for better or worse), until...well, I think you know the rest...we have all dropped out at various times for aprx a decade as pointless and obvious greedy changes were made with no logical thought in regards to the fans.

The hilarious thing is a LOT of investors still think Disney stock is a solid buy. For the Disney hardcore, they will just keep doubling down harder, which is the only thing keeping Disney afloat right now. But even those fans are starting to burn out, as is showcased by the closing of the galactic star cruiser. Disney drove away HALF the domestic market, priced out the bottom half of earners, and somehow people think this will work out in the long run.
Red Letter Media touched on this a bit where they talked about the importance of having different emotional situations in films and TV shows for kids. It's important for kids to experience and express these emotions earlier in life so they know how to cope/deal with them as they grow into adulthood. Having everything goofy and happy all the time gives kids a false sense of realty.
Very well made video, Sydney. I do agree. I think the problem with Disney is that they flew too far to the sun, and just acquired way too many properties.

the whole point of stories like bambi are to introduce death to kids, or other such lessons. they are scary but so is life. at least stories are safe, that's why we have them.. i mean there is a lot more to it but i am lazy and don't care THAT much
I think this is an interesting point to bring up. Life is difficult regardless of age. If we stop showing that in kids movies and show them how to deal with it in a healthy way, how else are kids supposed to deal with life? Lord knows way too many in gen z have a meltdown over even normal adversity.
I'm old. I watched "The Wonderful World of Disney" on Sunday nights. This BS coming out now has Walt wiggling in his cryogenic tube wondering "what the hell happened and what the hell is happening to my legacy?"
I remember watching every sunday night as well. But we are not "old" we are "mature".
