Allen, I've been watching your vids all week. Got super inspired. Went and splurged $100 on materials, some skulls, a wig head, and a full skeleton. Everything is going good so far except for when I attempted to antique one of the skulls. I didn't use the gel stain. I used Rustoleum cognac wood stain. Tell your subscribers DO NOT USE THIS!!! It doesn't come back of very well AT ALL! lol. Anyway, love your vids, keep up the great work!
Shanna E Thank you for watching, I was definitely pressed for time this week and almost skipped the subtitles- coments like yours make me glad I kept them in.
Just wanted to say a BIG thank you for your video. I was looking for a tutorial on antiquing a skull and one day your video came up on my feed. I found a large plaster skull that someone threw out. It needed repair, some heavy duty cleaning and many many coats of white paint (someone did a really mess up paint job and there was some gooey orange paint in places that would not come off). It was a day of the dead style skull. I follow what you did and it came out fantastic. Thanks again 💀
Great video! Love the side by side comparison of techniques. Great improvement of all the projects! Love your vision for things I would never think of doing!
you prolly dont care at all but does any of you know a method to log back into an Instagram account? I was stupid lost my account password. I would love any tricks you can offer me.
@Bowen Layne i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and Im in the hacking process atm. Takes a while so I will reply here later with my results.
I love seeing my home haunt's (Horror Fields) shirts floating around on RUclips. Pretty awesome. Gonna have to go back and watch your human pelt video. Have to make a few of them again.
Perfect timing on this video for me, as I just got the vinyl cthulhu idol coin bank I ordered in the main, and want to cover the coin slot and paint it up to look like an actual stone idol. So I think I'm definitely going to dry brush it up!
Oh how I wished this video had been done about 2 years ago! I figured a lot of this out by trial and error. But I did get some extra tips - thanks! Thanks for the actual definitions between the two- I have doing both but always just lumped it as "faux painting" lol
The great thing is, its such a versatile technique. I've used it for painting everything from prop guns, to mummified body parts, to faux leather tomes.
Thanks for the video sir, learned a bit about drybrushing tombstomes to age them but this shows a different perspective for skulls which I have yet to do
Dry brushing is something I just kind of...did, right from the start and I feel pretty competent with it. Regardless, good to see what we are doing similarly...including the Harbor Freight chips and things I maybe need to improve. Antiquing is something I haven't done much of but plan to this year with some of the corpsing techniques. Awesome vid as always O Sensei, Thanks!
StiltbeastStudios Again great video man. They clearly have a distinct character as in aged, and more fresh. On the figurines and statues the antiquing does look more realistic although dry brushing keeps that artsy look
+scott zentgraf If you like a technique and use it on all the things that you make, then you are really starting to define a look for the world you are creating. I love when an artist has a signature look.
StiltbeastStudios In particular, the one you painted gold before antiquing. The change from something modern and plastic to something old and metallic is quite convincing.
Thanks for such a great video! I want to use the Tandy antiquing gel to antique some skulls I'll use outdoors. Do I need to use a sealant of some sort to protect the gel from water damage?
Great video. Any tips or differences for dry brushing with latex based paints? I’m trying to paint a Michael Myers 2018 mask and I’m having problems with latex separating while I’m dry brushing.
Yay - Allen lives to see another week! Great guide again, especially the antiquing - like dry brushing, I can see a million uses for that technique. Ok, well a few thousand anyway. A question though - is the "gel stain" the same as regular Tandy leather stain? And as for the subtitles - definitely keep them as they're not only informative (you clarify or correct things), but very entertaining. My life must be very sad and boring for me to actually look forward to YTW each week!!
True Brit There is stain and their is gel antique stain. they are different- the gel antique is thicker and sticks in the cracks better. www.tandyleather.com/en-usd/home/2607-134.aspx
Have you tired lumiere metallic. I use the gold and silver all the time for dry bushing they are my go to paint right now when it comes to metallic colors.. They are designed for fabric but I have found them to work well on most surfaces.
I've used a lot of your techniques in my yard haunt, so thank you for posting these videos. Thinking of trying my hand at mask making now, so I'll be watching those as well.
Quick question on making leather masks, does the leather tend to shrink or draw up as it dries completely, and how long after shaping the mask before it holds its shape on its own?
Leather does not shrink as it dries- Rawhide does, they have different properties. When you are using veg tanned leather it will hold its shape as soon as it dries. Other types of leather are not as conducive to mask making.
Khristopher Smith Good lord no. Sounds like a great idea, I would just need a week or so of doing nothing else but compiling it. I might try to start it, it is a really good idea.
I did art at uni but been so sick since 2010, I did a nightmare before Christmas decorations but not as good as i hoped. I just need to keep pushing myself xx
I wish you had dry brushed the skulls with the antique gel to keep the colors more similar and really highlight the differences in technique. Using white on black, and then brown on white kind of made the projects too different to compare.
I see you point, but the looks are very different to begin with. When you dry brush it needs to be a lighter color on top of a dark color. You Have to dry brush with a light color and antique with a Dark color- So you cant use the same materials or colors in the same way.
For sure, and I mean you showed the traditional dry brush effect so it still works as an example. And you did kind of do exactly what I mentioned on the witch statues next. Either way thanks for taking the time.
And nothing says you can’t do both in the same prop... I often do. Do dark base coat, paint slightly wetter than dry brush, then tone it down with a wash/antiquing. Then when that’s dry, go over the very minute details with your highlight color. It adds dimension, and leaves it looking old but maybe not wet
Where did you get those cool looking skulls? Or did you cast those yourself? They look very similar to one I use for my head popper tombstone, but mine doesn't have horns or pointy teeth. Otherwise it appears almost identical. Also, I love the antique look. Is there a way to tone down or eliminate the glossiness?
***** I bought them at Mahem/ Halloween extreme - Im trying to find the company name then I will share it. Once they dry the antique is not glossy- I just never waited till it dried all the way.
I'D LIKE TO ORDER THE GEL STAINS AND HAVE A STORE HERE IN SYRACUSE, NY. WHAT ARE THE COLORS YOU RECOMMEND THE MOST? PLEASE EXCUSE THE CAPS....NOT YELLING....JUST LAZY AND HALF BLIND!! Thanks for sharing. Great ideas.
Russ McIntosh Thanks for watching1
Just found your cool channel.
Watching ton of your videos...
I am enjoying it :)
Thank you to the great Allen Hopps. I have a small yard haunt, I will definitely use this on my 18" skull for my 8 foot reaper!!
very cool, send me pics!
so cool thank you love dry brushing. wife thinks i over use it now but it looks cool
+scott zentgraf If you like a technique and use it on all the things that you make, then you are really starting to define a look for the world you are creating. I love when an artist has a signature look.
Always good content
Could you make an updated video of these techniques? I love the channel! I am a propsmaster myself.
+Surena Arnall you will see more of them, but they won't be updated, these techniques have been the same a long time
awesome devil skulls...
always awesome work...
JOHNJOHN 9111 Yeah they are pretty awesome. I got them at fright kingdom in Orlando.
The difference in the witch statues really is amazing.
Spikeys Studio you mean before paint and after paint or between dry brush and antique?
StiltbeastStudios In particular, the one you painted gold before antiquing. The change from something modern and plastic to something old and metallic is quite convincing.
Yeah its a great technique.
Thanks! Another winner!
Greg Packard Thank you, so kind.
They look great. Have you tried Rub & Buff in tubes?
I have, but this vid was just showing the techniques of drybrushing and antiquing mostly
I really enjoyed watching this! Where can I purchase those types of skulls?
Excellent👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻💀
Thanks for such a great video! I want to use the Tandy antiquing gel to antique some skulls I'll use outdoors. Do I need to use a sealant of some sort to protect the gel from water damage?
yes, I would seal them with some spray on polyurethane.
Great video. Any tips or differences for dry brushing with latex based paints? I’m trying to paint a Michael Myers 2018 mask and I’m having problems with latex separating while I’m dry brushing.

Had to look them up, it's actually spelled "vejigante". Super cool!
Beef Chavez yeah...I was pretty tired while I was editing lol- they are awesome arent they?
Damn good video. Very informative. Thank you!

Did you make the demon skull? Where's the how to or buy like . I really like them
I got it from my friends company!

For the Tandy Leather gel stain ... did you use Mahogany or Saddle Tan?
Dan Andres I use saddle tan.
I'll be looking twice at those cheap statues at the thrift store!! Thanks!!
yes, there is gold there!
Have you tired lumiere metallic. I use the gold and silver all the time for dry bushing they are my go to paint right now when it comes to metallic colors.. They are designed for fabric but I have found them to work well on most surfaces.
thegoblintrader I have not tried it, but now I will!
Let us know how you like it.
Great techniques! the end result looks like a bunch of work when it was actually done much simpler. That background song tho!! the name please??
Ask and you shall receive-ruclips.net/video/9q4FFIBnkmI/видео.html
Many thanks! I heard it, but it doesnt seem to match the one from the vid :(
I'm looking to make my skull look as if it has bin in a dry dirt for a long time & broken in pieces. any subjections?
Great video. I went to the big home improvement store not naming names and they want 99 cent each for the 1 inch brushes and it's the same brush as HF
stevensonmetal Correct- Harbor freight is without doubt the best place to get them.
Always look forward to RUclips Wednesday!
Chason Harrell Awesome! I always look forward to sleeping after the video is up lol.

Do you happen to have a typed list of all your favorite online stores compiled where you get your supplies?
Khristopher Smith Good lord no. Sounds like a great idea, I would just need a week or so of doing nothing else but compiling it. I might try to start it, it is a really good idea.
Allen! where do you get the tanning leather gel antique stain?
tandy leather factory
where can you get skulls
can you tell me which antik color you use? I am from austria and need more information about this special fluid color - thanks
Saddle tan is the color I use from Tandy leather
+StiltbeastStudios - thanks, that help me a lot!
That's cool !
Thank you!
Random question, do you think you could paint a faux leather mask? I'm horrified to try without any information about it.
Wow you inspire me
+VDubsTDi thanks! hopefully you are inspired to GO MAKE STUFF!
I did art at uni but been so sick since 2010, I did a nightmare before Christmas decorations but not as good as i hoped. I just need to keep pushing myself xx
yes, keep at it! o make stuff! and get better!
The small metallic paint jars by Martha Stewart are pretty good. Expensive, not a big jar, but you might want to try it than the gold spray paint.
matrixmom31 cool

Allen, what is the name of the antiquing stain? Can you get it at Home Depot? Great video!!!
culinarygirl3 You can use gel wood stain, but I love the Gel antique stain from Tandy Leather. I use the saddle tan color the most.
thanks once again
wow a Vegigante!!! the demons from Puerto Rico. it look 100% more cool in antic version.
I love those monsters!
What are the acrylic colors that you use when drybrushing the skull?
+George Seward Just some white and Yellow.

very true, im most likely to drybrush after antiquing rather than the other way round.
