A brief interlude from my Airbrush series, Jake walks you through making LED candles with LEDs from LighthouseLEDs lighthouseleds.... these look sweet and will be a fine addition to any set!
Thank you Allen. And thank you Jake. I really enjoyed seeing how Dark Hour uses some of these led candles. Also liked the explanations on theatrical lighting and practical lighting. Good stuff, thank you again.
Your channel has given me so much-needed information that i was able to Decorate for my teenage daughters Halloween party and my wife said it was to realistic that I had to take it down a few notches this year keep up the great work.
These are really good. I worked with pvc for awhile and used to use acetone to clean it. Would remove the lettering and alot of the shine. Results may vary of course but always worked when I used it. Awesome video thanks.
Jake and Allen, thank you for this. I had purchased the lighthouse leds, and wago nuts, but ran out of time to wire everything I wanted to this year. I was able to quickly wire 5 foam pumpkins last night (halloween 2016) just as the first ToTs started to arrive. Probably took me 30 min (maybe less). One thing with the Wago nuts, lifting the lock levers was much more difficult than i anticipated. i ended up using a screwdriver as an aid for leverage. I was afraid I was going to rip my fingernail out without it. Once locked, the thing is super secure.
Wow! They look really good. What a clever idea and quite simple to do too. You could even use these as night lights at home. Many thanks guys, you rock!
Great video as always, never thought about cutting them down so far and taking a heat gun to them but after seeing this well start doing that to ours I bought some of those same led flicker lights last year but ran out of time replace the battery operated bulbs, but this has inspired me to get that done Thanks Guys!!
@@StiltbeastStudios Maybe you should put this link in the description so others can find it easily. And in future videos, maybe tell people in the video about the link.
@@ManuFortiMcCoy They are not really connected - kinda they are but there are so many ways to wire LED's that posting one way would be a disservice since there are so many options. And there are lots of resources for wiring LED's.
These look great. I'll have to check out Lighthouse LEDs. Looks like I can get all the pre-wired lights and a 12v plug in one order. Do you find the resistors get particularly hot with the voltage drop having to go from 12v to 2-3v? A lot of my DIYs use foam, and heat+foam = fumes. Thanks!
Awesome video!! Ditch the loud music though, or learn to audio mix so it's at the same level as your voice- so it doesn't break headphone users ears lol!
no, now you know the nature of my evil. Im a prop guy who make some videos to help people out so There will be bad mixes sometimes. I get it, but I dont feel too terrible over it since Ive been giving out free prop info here for 13 years.
I have a bunch of LED Candles which flicker just like a regular candle. I opened one up and could not find anything in it besides the battery, a switch and the LED. Now I am a power electronics engineer with enough experience behind me to understand what I am seeing, and yet I am perplexed by this. It may be possible that the LED's themselves have some circuitry inside the package, but I have not gone over it with a magnifying glass. If anybody else has seen these things and knows whats happening I would like to hear from them. I bought them from the 99 cent store for 2/$
One thing I noticed is the theatrical lighting was a bright white color while the candle lighting tended to be more yellow - almost incandescent in color. I would suggest to make sure those matched so the effect is more believable and dramatic. Thanks again for another great tutorial!
Yeah we are between shows right now so those lights are not synched. All of our lights are color mixing so they are set for the next show but will not be used for our black out valentines- he was just showing the concept..
Hello Allen, how's it going? it's been awhile. I wanted to know if you will be attending the Midsummer Scream Halloween Festival in Long Beach, CA. The event is scheduled for July 30 & 31st???..
These take a lot of hot glue. In one of Allen’s videos he mentioned where he gets 25# boxes of hot glue sticks at a very reasonable price. I love these but I need more hot glue sticks. Would you be able to provide your supplier. They get expensive at any box stores. You did a fantastic job with this how to video. Watch everything you guys do. Please keep the videos coming.
no. but I appreciate you telling me what to do. some videos the mix is off, it happens. I make monsters not videos. I wouldnt watch anymore, you will most likely hate them. Happy Halloween
+StiltbeastStudios Indeed!! I just used some little LED tea light candles in mine; it was a great quick way to whip up some black candles for decor :) But yeah, definitely wouldn't be the best idea to wire up a bunch of cardboard tubing XD
You can use a normal 9-12 volt power supply (found at most thrift stores) and just hide the wire under a table cloth. We also use 9v batteries and easily power 4-5 candles for several hours with no issue.
Hi Allen, I'm teaching a Cosplay class this summer ( Trekonderoga 2016) and want to send my guests to your web page.I think your work is great... and the information you provide is right on. it is, but its still opaque where this pipe is translucent. thats the element we want, if you dont want the candle glow through the wax then the pvc works great.
thank you for your videos! my wife ànd I made corpses with a little twist after seeing how you do it and they look great! biff jerky and barbie q, best part is she is as morbid as I and I keep them around the house and not in the shed
just a DC powersource for the LEDs normally a wall war I will use up to 1 amp for them I explain all that in this video if you are unfamiliar- its the same thing just the LED housing looks different- ruclips.net/video/rf3PltSCxSE/видео.html
There has to be something that the leads on the ends of the led are wired into, which is then connected to or plugged into a battery source or wall outlet. I have never worked with leds before, nor have I ever wired anything before, and I need a bit more clarification. Please pardon my ignorance, guys. Just never have done this before...what part are the leds attached to, and will that have wiring itself for either batteries or a wall outlet?
I use speaker wire. here is where I explain wiring- this link should go to 8:34 in the video if not then skip to it. ruclips.net/video/rf3PltSCxSE/видео.html
Really nice! I noticed at 13:49 that the bank of candles in the alcove all flickered at the same time. Is that a camera artifact, or are they really all flickering together? Wondering if the "random flicker" circuit that drives each of the LED's is identical, and initializes all the LED's on the same string when power is applied.
+Todd Henson That bank of candles was made before we started using the flickering LEDs. It has two flicker boxes so there are two flicker patterns split among all the candles. The flicker in each of the new flicker LED does give random flickering.

Starting to get things together to make these candles, one question. I'm buying the 12vdc plug in---does it matter if it is 5amp or 1amp, I do not want to buy the wrong one and have them fail. Thanks for the earlier info.
+lilac2484 as long as you dont need more than an amp the one amp is fine- it HAS to be 12V but it just needs suffucient amps to power the LEDs ~35 LEDs per amp

Great vid. Can you show how to wire the lights together? Thanks

How can I make these as water resistant as possible? I'd like to line the outdoor banisters with them, but it rains a lot.
I mean, just cover the LED and connections in clear caulk- the rest is 100% waterproof, they last fine outside.
allen is saddle tan the color you are using? i dont do any leather work so i dont want to pick up the wrong stuff
+MichiganHauntersbyBlood Yes, saddle tan is my go to color.
You could try using real candles and making them look like led candles.
thats a fire hazzard- even having all the wax.
I've used paper towel/toilet paper tubes for this sort of thing too. And pringles cans :D Cheaper and quicker, though less durable.
Also more flammable, I try to not mix paper products and electricity, even 12 v
