Jeep Renegade Third Brake Light Replacement

- The jig is up, the news is out... Replacing the third brake light on your 2015+ Jeep Renegade when the lens invariably falls out isn't nearly as difficult as the internet would have you believe. 20 minutes and a few hand tools and you can do it yourself, saving yourself a trip to the dealer.
To do the job, you'll need:
Brake light assembly, Mopar P/N 68247167AA, available from your local dealer, from a variety of online parts distributors, or you can do what I did and order it from eBay.
A 10mm short or long socket for the spoiler retaining nuts and bolts. I used a short.
A 8mm long socket for the brake light retaining nuts.
A short extension
Some way of turning those sockets. I used a nut driver and cordless screw gun, but you can just as easily use a ratchet to do everything. I used quarter-inch drive, but use what you have available to you.
That’s it. You could use some sort of trim removal tool to release the window surround trim, but I found that my fingers worked just as well.
The worst thing I’ve ever done…wouldn’t have been able to do it without this video! Thank you!!
I appreciate your effort to show how to replace the 3rd brake light. After reading all of the comments, and yes, you did say to pop up the back edge of the spoiler.... it went by so quick with trying to digest everything else going on, that's probably where people missed the explanation. I know I missed it and I watched your video 3 times before I attempted the job. Focusing on nuts, clips, interior trim, etc it is easily missed.
However! The job was accomplished in about 45 minutes. I would point out I had a much easier time with the interior trim side clips by leaving them ON the little stub on the trim. That way, I just was able to slide the clip/stub into the slot, rather than trying to get the stub IN the clip.
And to keep the top lens from falling off at a later date, I epoxied the whole joint where the lens met the body of the brake light. I don't plan on doing it again.
Thanks for the explanation. I probably should have better documented how I got the spoiler off the hatch, but I was expecting the job to be a lot more involved than it ended up being. One of my inspirations for this is Robert DIY, who has a library of videos for working on old Volvos. He shoots his videos in a similar format and while sometimes little details that might be helpful could be missed, the overall video was helpful, and with the lack of any documentation on this job, I wanted to share my experience. Good to know for future videos.
I replaced mine today thanks to your help. It was a booger but mission accomplished. Thank you
i fixed mine today , and the video helped. Those clips that hold the plastic molding are a pain. After that it was very easy . Thanks for the video
I have to do this for my mother-in-law’s Jeep and I had no idea where to start. Thanks!
*THANK YOU!!!* Took me way too long to find this video. I wish the algorithm prioritized it better. Mine is 2016, not 15, but basically the same. Putting the wrong year in the search might have made it harder to find. And I was searching "spoiler" which didn't work, but thank goodness I eventually found it anyway
Thank you so much for this video. It made it so much easier to do the change!!
Thank you for posting this video! I have the same issue with my renegade and was quoted a price way more than what I was willing to spend for such a small issue. I’m going to try and replace the break light myself.
Glad it helped. I was surprised by the lack of helpful documentation for something that seems so annoyingly common.
Thank you for the great video. I replaced mine yesterday and i did two things that may make it easier to not loose the flange bolts and nuts. I used a claw snake to grab the bolts and nuts under the flange after i loosened them and used it to fully remove them, i also used electrical tape around the socket and flange part of the hardware to keep them in the socket until they were on completly on. If you choose this method you will need some needle nose pliers to take the socket off the bolts and nuts since they are taped together.
Thanks for the instructional. The fiddliest part was closing the plastic at the end with the clips falling out.
I had one clip come out of the plastic when I took it apart, but the metal clips and how they are mounted on that upper piece is a lot stouter than the plastic push clips on the bottom that really should be single-use, and act like it.
Thank you for this video I have this exact problem and now with your perfect demonstration I’m going to fix it
Mine just fell off this morning
Excellent. Thanks for sharing. You saved my day with your vid :👍
Thank you for the video. The hardest part is after you put the light in.
It is a bit fiddly, but it would be just as fiddly whether you take the lower panel out or not.
This just helped me out immensely, thank you!
Life saver!! Thank you so much for this video it was so so so helpful!!! 😀😀😀
Worked perfectly! Thanks!
appreciate the video! there is not a lot online on replacing this and had no idea it involved more to it. Thanks for posting this!!
Don't forget to mention keeping the hatch horizontal so the nuts don't fall out of your 10mm socket into the hatch stamping/frame.
I droped 2 bolts (( dont know how get them back
Dropped all 4 nuts inside hatch door . Have a camera with 9 foot lead . Watch camera screen and took small diameter stainless wire and fish them out .the right side was worst they went inside channel . Job took about 45 minutes .suggest screw nuts to end of stud and then use a magnet socket to remove so that want drop them .
thanx for the video!
Ok. I just did this entire job yesterday. Took a few hours and it was my first time. First I want to say that the instructions given were on point. Couldn't have done this without you.
I would also add picking up additional parts just in case which include; those 10 mm flange nuts that are at risk of falling into the abyss. I dropped one. Couldn't retrieve it even with magnetic pickers. Next the five yellow retainer clips that actually hold the spoiler into place.
The only thing about this job that proved tedious was trying to put it back together. The two metal clips on both sides of were at risk of breaking the molding of the trim. So you need to be super careful when putting it back together. It's a pushing/pulling motion.
Then once the foot is in the door using a tool to gently push the clip upwards towards the slot while pushing. I would almost say switch out the metal clips for something plastic.* I would much rather the clip breaks than the molding it sits in. Parts lists below.
68255569AA - Yellow Retainer 5x
METRIC FLANGE NUT M6-1.0 ZINC - 4x
U type Metal Retainer clips - a.co/d/dZ4lTHB 2x*
What’s the part number for the 4 nuts, I dropped 2 of them and can’t get it with a magnet.
I'm having the hardest time removing the plastic trim piece. It feels like I'll break it when I try to pull it off.
Update: Got the damn thing removed. I was needing to run a dash cam wire under the plastic. Getting it back on was a pain, but got it eventually.
@@jalv1234 I was out and you beat me to the response. Glad to hear it worked out. I'm always paranoid about pulling on the trim pieces, but with the judicious application of force, they'll come apart.
@@145garage yeah the first time I tried to pull it off I was immediately uncomfortable with the amount of force I used and the fact that it didn't budge. After more research and watching your video again I was able to pry it off enough to run a cable.
Question mine only the cover to the 3rd light is missing.... I'm not sure if mine broke or did it just fly off my lights are still there just the red part is missing
That's what happened to the Renegade I repaired in this video. If you have the cover, you can probably glue it back on. Otherwise, I don't know that they sell just that lens.
Well done 👏👍👋
Great video, just my panel seems to not be in place and I’m not sure how to fix it..
Are you talking the lens over the light? It isn't available as a separate piece, so you have to replace the entire assembly.
@@145garage My lens came off, but the light still works. How do I go about reattaching the lens?
@@johncotti1586 The short answer, if you still have the lens, is glue, or perhaps a two-part epoxy. Either way, mask off the surrounding area and follow the instructions on the package.
@@145garage Thanks for your quick and informative reply!
Not only is this a pain on this vehicle, changing the cabin air filter requires removing a panel, eight screws and the entire glove box. Glove box light assembly fell apart in the process. Removing the battery is also a pain in the ass. I cannot stand working on this vehicle!!!
You're not wrong on any of this. Fortunately the third brake light is the only work I've had to do on this particular Renegade. Knock on wood is has been pretty reliable for its owner.
How do you reset the code after replacing
That’s a good question. In our case, the lens fell off but the light was still functioning, so it didn’t trigger a CEL.
I might just gorilla glue mine back on. Just weird that there's nothing that it clips onto so im nervous about that.
If you have the lens, that is definitely an option. In my case, the owner wasn’t aware that it was missing.
@@145garage Awesome, yeah I was lucky enough that it didn't fell off while I was driving and landed on the road. It just fell off this morning after removing some snow that fell over the weekend. I'll just try the gorilla glue, but if it falls off again I'll just buy a new one and come back to rewatch the video. Thanks!
why they couldnt just put 2 screws with gromets UNDER the wing..makes no darn sense.. would be too easy i guess
hi mate, I dropped two bolts inside. How can I get them? ))) when I drive the car they move and make bad sounds, give me advice pls
I dropped a couple in the process, and used a flexible magnetic pickup to fish them out.
@@145garage ok I will buu this ) was it easy pick them up?
@@MegaFactTV It wasn't too bad. As long as they are rattling around, if you can get the pickup close to the bolts/nuts (there are both) it should pick them up. Might take a little moving of the hatch up and down giggle them around.
@@145garage what u think 24 inch magnetic pick up tool can reach them?
@@MegaFactTV That should be enough.
Hi 145 Garage, I followed instructions and seem to work; however the nuts dropped into the hatch steel cage. How did you "fish" them out?
I have a couple different magnetic pickups, one flexible and a shorter one that fits in a pocket protector (remember those?). Mine are old, but you should be able to get one at your local parts store.
@@145garage Yes, I already tried that. I got one. But I can't find others. Thank you. Everything else worked out well.
@@herbtobias8726 They can get wedged in the structure of the tailgate. I had to open and close the tailgate, and bang on it a bit to knock the socket and nut I dropped loose.
Get a camera holder!
I am halfway though this it’s the most pain in the ass thing I’ve ever done
They definitely don't make it easy, but this makes a pain in the ass job a little less so.
@@145garage oh ya idk if I’m just to short of weak but that spoiler part on a 2018 just does not want to come off
@@MTGirlthegamer Did you get the two bolts out of the end and the nuts off the studs in between. The clips that hold the rest of the spoiler on are strong, but it will come apart.
@@145garage ya I did I have honestly given up and I’m just gonna take it to the dealership I’ve already broken a pin and a small piece of plastic came out when I tryed to take the spoiler off it used to be a used rental so they probably did something to it that’s making it extremely hard to take off I don’t really want to brake anything else it was a great tutorial this car is just giving me issues as always 😂
@@MTGirlthegamer Sorry it didn't work out for you. As always, when in doubt leave it to a professional.
Sorry, but i think is a very bad video, doesn't show the hardest part of the procedure, how to take off the spoiler.
I'm sorry you found it challenging, but removing the spoiler is the easiest part of the job. It wasn't necessary to show every single bolt and nut being removed.
@@JimalTemus , to show to take off bolts and nuts isn't important, plastic hollows is the part i'm interested, it is no easy. In contrast, the spoiler is easy to brake it.
I describe exactly how I did it at the 2:17 mark; I popped upward on the back edge of the spoiler with my other hand flat on top to keep the spoiler under control. That takes advantage of the structure of the spoiler. If you pry along the leading edge of the spoiler you're more likely to crack it and/or mar the trailing edge of your roof.
@@145garage, like i said, you didn't show it. Thanks a lot.
@@diegogermancontrerasfajard6276 he was nice enough the upload the video but if you’d like you can go pay $1000 to get it fixed at the dealership
