I dont know if its about demand? When the samurai got booted out of the US it was because of safety! I would love a jimny for sure but im not sure that it meets crash standards. Jeep obviously made huge changes to keep up with safety and fuel economy which is why they have the renegade, compass, and cherokee, three vehicles which are almost mechanically the same. They needed the mileage average to come down.

Daniel Brumbelow The Jimny was not an unsafe car compared to other cars sold at the time. Consumer Reports rigged test results to make the Jimny flip over in rollover tests so they could get magazine subscribers and ratings for a tv news show. Suzuki took them to court and won proving that the results were rigged by deflating tires and changing other parts of their testing to make the car rollover but by the time Suzuki won their case, the damage to the Samurai sales were already done.

    Yes and No.
The Renegade has size and proportions similar to an older gen Wrangler (YJ or TJ), while new gens are longer, wider, and heavier, with stronger engines.
But the key to offroading is weight and gearing, and so the little Renegade can definitely be a beast with the proper setup, and still be a good daily driver.

@T Hawk, cept the KL TH actually has a true low range transfer case and legit rear locker....unlike the Renegade which simply doesn't. Not saying it can't do trails, just being locked into 1st gear (high) limits what it can get through.

I don't know if it'll ever be as good offroad as a Wrangler, especially at rock crawling, but a Renegade Trailhawk with just siped mudders and a winchmount at both ends can be pretty capable offroad with a good driver. A 2" suspension lift and taller tires improve the Renegade approach/breakover/departure angles vs stock, but I'd start being concerned with COG, especially if the track width isn't increased.
A lot of supposed 4WD systems can't move the vehicle if just one wheel has traction. A Trailhawk can...but so can a JK/JL/JT. BrakeLock works in rocks. On an older convertible Jeep (CJ/YJ/TJ/LJ), installing lockers works similar offroad, if not even better. The Renegade can possibly get 30MPG though.

I like the effort and I think Wranglers are "overpriced" so I understand the motivation. Something like this would be more tempting if they put a locking differential (at least in the rear) and a turbo engine that wasn't designed for max fuel economy like the weird little 1.3T they have now. Would be hilarious and awesome if they could fit their 2.0T in this platform.

In Europo the ranegade can be equipped with the 2.0 turbo diesel so I guess that other one could be fitted in

Its the CRV of jeeps, it's great for mild snow and mud situations but if you start going extreme you’ll be spending alot in repairs. It's a good daily that will get great MPG if you keep it mild.

The potential was there for the Renegade to be a really good vehicle. Reliability issues will definitely plague them until Jeep get's it completely figured out. I've done oil changes on them and it's no joy. Under the hood isn't bad but dropping the oil is a completely different issue. Some manufacturers have just cut holes in the under engine shield for the drain plug and the filter, and Chrysler has done this but the Renegade has a huge pan that has to be removed with several screws just to access the filter. A strategically placed hole in the shield would have made all the difference here.
Otherwise, she's got a sharp looking unit and I hope she enjoys owning it.
