  • This is my trail guide on Slaughterhouse Gulch labeled as a moderate to difficult trail. Close to Denver, its a great trail for testing out your vehicle. We film this one with Jeep Cherokee KLs, Renegade BUs, and Wranglers JK & JKU. This one is jam packed with a lot of unique off-road action so here’s the video’s breakdown...

    I use my stock Jeep Rubicon for rating difficulty running it like it’s an open Jeep. Lockers are reserved for I need them moments or to not wreck the trail. Still working on my video making skills but I hope this is helpful! The trail is covered from beginning till the end in order.
    For trail planning, I use the Funtreks Books (amazon search: Funtreks books). I have the current editions of the Colorado books and Moab. I finish up my trail planning with trails offroad as they can sometimes have more detail as well as user submitted current conditions feedback. I’m testing GPS apps and currently don’t use one. Here’s my video that tells you how I do it. • Find off-road trails t...
    As always, thanks for watching!! Your feedback helps me, so let me know if you can help me improve these. Share them with your nervous wheeling buddies so they can know that they can do the trail. Subscribe for more trails and off-road Colorado content.

      @@coloradomallcrawlers Can't wait to see more videos of the renegade. I own a 2015 limited on 29" tall (235/60/18) Arturo trailblade xt's and 1" wheel spacers. I wish we had terrain like this in south Jersey. But we don't, so stock height will do for now. It's not as capable as my old 94 zj on 31 mud tires 2 inch lift and front and rear lunch box lockers but still enjoy it and the better mpg.

      @@coloradomallcrawlers can't wait. I actually found your channel because I was searching for Cherokee videos since I feel those are a level or 2 above the renegade in capability due mostly because of hp and that rear locker (imo). Bbbbuuuuutttt then I see these guys in their renegades and it reminds me of why I bought one (even if it isn't a trailhawk) and helps me "keep the faith" in my decision lol.

    • @coloradomallcrawlers
      @coloradomallcrawlers  3 года назад +5

      Toycoma I’m a huge fan of the renegade because of its size! We keep making trail rigs bigger and bigger and I feel like the engineers don’t realize we need to fit on the trails too. Honestly, I was thinking about adding a Bronco yet I’m not so sure now due to it’s wider than a JL width (if that’s correct). But back to the renegade, hoping Jeep gives it a proper transfer case and maybe a locker in the future 😈

Modded roush to that so I’m biased...lol. Both good vehicles. One thing that you'll probably see in these videos is that independent suspension provides great traction because slips and bumps on one side don't affect the other side (near as much). That's one reason I think the Cherokee and renegades did better on the tree.

    Yes thank you for this! I want more ideas for my renny! I'm in CO and got a renegade trailhawk for its city + mtn versatility. I'm trying to figure out my first mods, now that it's nearing winter I might wait until spring. But I'm thinking lift 1.5-2", not sure what tires yet but I'd like to go 2 sizes bigger and hopefully not need wheel spacers, though I haven't figured out if they actually do anything other than allowing for larger tires, and then rails. As of now though I've done a few moderate (trails offroad rating 3-4) as stock and she's done splendid!

    My wife has a Renegade. We ran it through some deep water recently running with the lifted wranglers. It lost a fuse from sitting with the fan under water too long, but held it's own. The guide for the day kept stopping and telling us he couldn't believe the Rene was keeping up. They could really use locking diffs, but the engineers claim the diffs aren't strong enough. The Cherokee can be had with a rear locker, but the available gear ratios are different. No swap option. Sucks.

      The 2.4 engine is certainly too weak for Jeepin’ when combined with street gearing and a low-stall torque converter. The 2.4 engined Jeeps without low-range get into ruts where all four wheels have traction, the throttle is floored, and no wheels will spin - it can’t deliver enough torque to the wheels to go. Very un-Jeeplike.
      It is, on the other hand, very Subaru-like. The 2.5 CVT-equipped Subaru’s have the same problem, for which Subiphobes offer every excuse in the book, and are often seen in a rut while trailing, with the gas pedal floored and nary a wheel turning.
      It even shames me to have to compare the off-road performance of a Jeep with that of a Subaru ...

    • @coloradomallcrawlers
      @coloradomallcrawlers  3 года назад

      I wheeled an open diff wrangler for 10 years, it’s way more capable than many will give it credit for. Additionally, your traction control system can mimic a locker somewhat (it requires careful manipulation of the throttle to get it engaged). So to answer your question, I did use lockers in these videos unless I note that I did... I think I used them on Hackett Gulch (to avoid wrecking the terrain), Cliffhanger 2.0, and Kelly Flats (due to bad driving). In the future, I’ll do a better job of documenting what I’m using on the guides, but I rarely use lockers. With all this said, don’t wheel alone. I will and it’s hypocritical for me to say that, but I can usually figure a way to get my Jeep unstuck if it happens (airing down, lockers, stacking, traction boards). Anyway, thanks for watching!

    Let me start off by saying *old guy here**who had a CJ-7 kidney rattler back in the day. Second year production 1977 The original *Renegade* and later the 2nd year 1988 YJ *Original* Wrangler.
    Go modern design Jeeps! The rolling brick snobs hate them but I love my 2015 Jeep *second year* reinvented Cherokee Trailhawks shark nose! It's the reason why I bought it brand spankin new. It looks like a Jeep that was designed in the 21st century!Yeah it's not solid axel but it is unibody like the original. Has a much tamer ride with it's independent suspension. It looks exactly like something Willy's Motors would have had on display at the 1964 Worlds Fair!
    "The Jeep of the Future! 😏 Sleek,luxurious, and capable" It is like a childhood dream to own this vehicle. I wouldn't expect you youngsters to understand the significance of that😒
    But it's just what an old fart who likes the woods needs😏
    Not a rehash of the 1940 flat fender.
    I wouldn't have a problem with the reinvented Renegade if it was available with the 3.2 liter that's in the Cherokee. Its compact kinda like the Willy's or CJ5 and acts totally capable *when modded* but just a bit underpowered.
    **Then again wasn't the original Willy's 50-60 horses?** Anyway,
    2015 Cherokee T H
    3.2 V-6 with 2" lift on 245/ 70/17 Cooper discoverer AT4S gives me a respectable 11.7" of ground clearance.
    2" is max safe height to avoid drive axel strain. And sticking with the 245 width in a 70 series, the 1" taller tire makes no need for pinch weld mod,plus the spare fits in the original spare tire well!👍 Currently sitting on stock shocks and springs.
    Next upgrade Dobson or Fox 👍You'll all be old and grey one day...(if you aren't already 🙄)

    I think the Renegade is one of the most underrated off-road vehicles. For being as small as it is, it's extremely capable! The only down side in my opinion is how under powered it is with the 2.4L. But I believe they offer a 1.5l turbo now in the new ones that should be a lot better.

      Yes sir! I agree, and I wish more of the off-road manufacturers realized we need nimble off-roaders. Not they ultra wide vehicles they’re building. Anyway, thanks for watching!

    How does the unibodies do after doing this a couple times. Do doors still close easily. I am thinking about getting a renegade or the bronco sport.

      Well, I don’t own one, but Davon has taken that renegade everywhere and I don’t think he’s had issues. I’m partial to the renegade even tho I wish it had more off-road goodies. The bronco sport might be good too tho. I’m in the market for a second vehicle so I’ve even tossed around an idea of a bronco. Thanks for watching!

    The Renegades need a little more power/torque and/or a low transfer case. I've seen so many videos of them where people have it pinned and it just doesn't want to move. I'm curious as to how well the 1.3 turbo does now since it's rated for 210 tq instead of the 175 from the 2.4. The Renegade TH has been in my sight for a while now but I keep leaning more towards a slightly used Grand Cherokee as they can be had for the same price as a new Renegade TH and have a lot more potential. Can't make up my mind lol.

      Thank you! 2.4Ls… he recommended the 1.3L in his walkaround due to the increased torque and tunes available. Sorry for not including that in the video info… this was an early one.

    That dark cherokee had real low tire pressure you can see the grip. But holy cow I didn't know the renegades so good off-road. Its shape is perfect it's just needs more torque and better locker or awd system. I might go with a bronco sport but kinda wanna testdrive a renegade 😂 its like a better looking Fj

    Man that downed tree gave yall a hell of a time. Quick question for you, did you air down the tires? From the video it kind of looks like yall are running full psi. Either way it looks like a fun trail and those Renegades and the Cherokee are afraid to go full send.

    • @coloradomallcrawlers
      @coloradomallcrawlers  3 года назад +1

      NotICON haha yeah, but both took a nasty line at first. There’s a good 4-6 inches of air under the log at that spot. I’m the only one aired up, I do that for the trail guides most of the time. The reason is not everyone has a compressor plus I hope I can make things look better on video 😉 Thanks for watching! Looking forward to more of yours!

      Your buddy Sage is hating hard on these little off-roaders on my Facebook. Hope you can help him see the light that not everyone needs to wheel a Rubicon 😉🤣

    • @NotICON
      @NotICON 3 года назад +1

      @@coloradomallcrawlers Yeah I've wheeled with a modified Renegade and a new Grand Cherokee that was modified. I know they are capable for what they are, but seeing one on the trail is like finding a unicorn, they just don't handle the rocks or the trails out here very well. I think it honestly comes down to a measuring contest between the Wrangler owners and the other Jeeps. A new Wrangler owner will be out wheeled by a Renegade or Cherokee because of the lack of experience and not knowing what its capable of doing. Then they Renegade/Cherokee owner talks crap saying that they can out wheel a Wrangler. Then its just a back and forth vicious circle of a measuring contest.

    • @coloradomallcrawlers
      @coloradomallcrawlers  3 года назад +1

      Yeah absolutely agree! Although, I will say, at least on the Colorado groups, these dudes in non-wranglers get brutalized. The dude who broke on Tincup by going full send was brought out because he got so much hate on FB’s Colorado Jeep Club. All he asked was for some trail recommendations for his new ride. I think because of that, he was determined to wheel it hard which was its undoing that day. I hate this cycle. I wish more people would be supportive towards others. I was in midsouth Jeeps where we did some wild east coast bashing and there was a heavily modified KJ in the group (the rest were crazy built wranglers). That guy surprised me! Your videos are killing it lately! But I might have to sneak in some light hearted jabs at Sage in future comments 😉🤣

      @coloradomallcrawlers  3 года назад

      It should be noted in the video. I think he had a 2in lift here, but he may have had the 3in lift. The 3in lift seems to wear out the vehicle much quicker tho.
