    MAF cleaning- a method I've always used- is get a 2"-3" tall plastic or metal tube with a bottom, insert the MAF, straw spray your cleaner till it more than covers the resistors, let sit 10-15 minutes, take it out, then spray with 10 second shots- using the aerosol to power away the gunk- haven't used a Q-tip at all, and it *always* works. *Soaking is the key.*

      and I thought I was the only one to drowned them and use half can of cleaner ;)

    • @HUBBABUBBADOOPYDOOP
      @HUBBABUBBADOOPYDOOP 7 лет назад +1

      Only way to do it correctly. What's a can- $6? Why spritz more on your clipboard than the evaporated Q-tip- and dangerously drag it on a delicate tungsten filament, doing nearly nothing? C'mon now. Soak it 10 minutes, blow it off with the cleaner, done.

    Thank you for the great tutorial! I soaked my MAF sensor in a little plastic bottle full of MAF cleaner for about 15 minutes. By eye, the MAF didn’t appear too grimy, but the cleaning fluid was dingy and had some black specs in it after the soak. EGR code went away after a few cycles and is staying off. I’m learning this D-Max Chevy Express Van, again thank you again for the education!

    This is wonderful. I have wondered for decades how an engine can work. I mean the intake valve is open for less than 1/100th of a second @ 3000 rpm. If the engine is 2 liters than every second it draws 50 liters of air, and that has a mass of 50gms. This has bothered me for years. It is nice to see my math is correct.

    Super helpful Mr. O. Because it was a day off, I did the same procedure on my 04 LLY -no codes and newish filter. Before cleaning I got 24 g/s at 100%, 18 g/s at 30% and 38 g/s at 0. The MAF wires were shinny to begin with after q-tipping I rechecked the numbers which stayed the same, except 39 g/s at 0%. Not really a fix but a learning experience, did not know about the MAF working for the EGR. This is my latest Chevy and first diesel, fortunately it isn't headed for the scrap yard...yet. What HD diesel and year what would you get? Thank you both for the hard work and don't forget to take a vacation now and then!

    A Chivy salvage yard, HAHAHA! They'll keep us employed, that's for sure! I've got an '02 1500HD I just did an A/C overhaul on (compressor, drier, etc.). Clutch was so worn it must've had an 1/8" gap - before it leaked out due to a crusty seal on the condenser vapor inlet, you'd have to whack the compressor to get it to run, lol. Lots of rust on this one, but not bad shape at all for a 15 year old GM product, shockingly enough.

      @@vincerobertson1214 the finger stick is just a device that tells the truck’s ecm that the egr is functioning as it should to avoid a check engine light. Though, if you have an LLY it may be just fine to block it and not buy a finger stick. That’s what I’ve done and hasn’t thrown codes yet (been a few months and about 15k miles).

    Working at Walmart as an Auto Care Technician, I have definitely seen much dirtier air filters in diesels.
    Walmart does carry Fram as their filter contractor for air filters, but Fram has 2 levels of filters. 1st is the Fram Extra Guard, their basic filter, and 2nd is the Fram Ultra Synthetic which is their premium air filter.
    When I replace filters, if I know it's going out into the oil patch in North Dakota, or seeing a lot of dirt road usage, and if it's a service type rig, like this one, I'll use the Ultra Synthetic. If it's someones town driver, I'll use the Extra Guard. But I will also offer an option and recommend the Ultra Synthetic for it's better filtration characteristics.
    Walmart just started carrying the Super Tech line of air filters too, but we went into shutdown with the Auto Care Center due to Covid19 right when we got them, so I haven't had a chance to install any or see how they work compared to Fram.
    There are a lot of good air filters out there, stick to a name brand and you'll be fine. (incidentally, AC Delco and Wix/Napa Gold are also good filters, but you never see a comparison between Wix/Napa Gold, K & N, Mobil 1 against a Fram Ultra Synthetic filter. They always compare them to the Fram Extra Guard and poo poo Fram for their inferior filter compared to the other premium branded filters. I wonder why that is............................)

    When you get a vehicle in that has "updates" available do you typically just go ahead and do the update(s) or do you ask the customer first, and if so, do you charge for each update, or is it included in scan time/diagnostic charges ?
    Also
    Would you recommend cleaning the MAF as a general maintenance task eg: once a year kind of thing, or wait till you have an issue?
    Thanks for the videos and the great info you post.

    • @SouthMainAuto
      @SouthMainAuto  7 лет назад +9

      In this case the updates were part of the repair but there is a "programming fee" and a "diagnosis fee" Typical programmings are $95 and diagnosis of any sort is a one hour minimum @ $70. As far as cleaning the MAF I typically do it for customers when ever I replace an air filter.

    Good stuff Eric, one of my neighbors has a Duramax with a P0401 code but it doesn't bother him since no one cares about the money light here in Central PA lol.
    Now I'm curious, what fixed it...the MAF cleaning or the new filter? Weird to see the MAF reading drop from 36g/sec to only 26g/sec on the 100% EGR open self-test at the end, while with bidirectional, a 30% EGR command resulted in MAF dropping from 38g/sec to 20g/sec. But the truck is happy and so is the customer :)

    • @SouthMainAuto
      @SouthMainAuto  7 лет назад +6

      I had 2010 in the shop with similar issues the other day and it would trip the light at 41g/sec just like clock work at an idle no EGR. Cleaned MAF and installed OEM filter after that it would read 37g/sec at idle, no more light. After a little research I found that 41 was the threshold for them. High flow aftermarket air filters really mess with these newer ones 07 up.

    • @fdavid

      Those same codes will pop up if there is an exhaust issue as well or if someone put a high performance exhaust because there is insufficient back pressure to push the gasses from exhaust to the intake as a result of the free flowing exhaust system. This can occur with cat back OR full exhaust systems.

      So EGR diagnostic trouble code = dirty MAF. I recently had a oxygen sensor dtc and the problem was low coolant. Taking dtcs at face value can be costly.

    Darned groupies interrupting you all the time!
    That was not so satisfying. When you noted the MAF readings at 4:00 , you opened the EGR to only 20% which accounted for the 22 g/s. After cleaning the MAF the readings were about the same but a little steadier. At 14:20 when you re-checked, the g/s at 20% was still around 22. So you weren't kidding about the sensitivity to air filters ( and maybe the miniscule change from cleaning the MAF). Was hoping for something more definitive like a rodent in the EGR line... Still, good info to know. Thank you, Sensei.

    Electronic Engineer myself and my opinion: If the mass airflow sensor cleaner can't clean it then nothing wrong trying some carb or brake clean. You have to replace it it anyway if you can't get it clean and it's not reporting properly.

      Have you thought about getting the Autel J2534? I think you can do the programming directly from the Maxisys. I don't know how yet, or if you need additional software. Or maybe you still need a PC to do the programming. I haven't been able to find much info on it, but I haven't looked very hard.

    • @SouthMainAuto
      @SouthMainAuto  7 лет назад +2

      It is just a J Box from Drew tech. You can use it on a regular PC to be the most stable.

      Mike Edwards you can do programming with the Bluetooth autel adapter he used in the video you just have to use a PC with USB cable. I have a cardaq M but I tried with the Autel VCI just for the hell of it and worked like a charm. Just had to install the Autel Pc software suite. Cardaq is the only one I fully trust but it's nice to have a backup

    I have an 06 Silverado 3/4 ton with the Duramax. It has 551000 miles. Will the MAF cause the engine to go into limp mode while hauling heavy loads?

    • @2015_Rubicnn
      @2015_Rubicnn 3 года назад

      Is the check engine light on? Kind of a non specific question. Limp mode can be caused from a bunch of issues.

    • @darinbarfield8738
      @darinbarfield8738 2 года назад

      I have been wondering the same thing…
      My 07 Duramax only has 195k, but last year it’s been doing same thing,
      But only when I have a heavy load & pushing it a little, like traveling 75mph with full horse trailer & start up a hill, it is prawn to jump into limp mode. I had thought it was just low fuel pressure, so I have put an aftermarket fuel pump system…Fass. And it has helped & slightly increased power but eventually got into situation where the limp mode came into affect again,..
      I have found now that I can pull over, switch it off for 2-3 mins then crank it up and it’s good to go again,
      Prior to learning this I had replaced several factory fuel filters, thinking that was the source of my lack of fuel pressure.
      But my check engine light has been on for several years, of which it was running fine with no outwardly signs of issues & no limp mode until this past year.

    During first EGR test you've only opened valve to 20%, not 30% . And during second test you've got identical 22g/s when you briefly got it at 20%. MAF cleaning didn't do anything seems to me

    Eric, according to Wells Tech, cleaning MAFs with cleaner still damages the coating on the resistor. However they also state, using cleaner is better than a nothing. They further state, if the customer agrees, it is better to replace the sensor with a new one. What's your opinion on this debate?

    • @leoguy1609
      @leoguy1609 7 лет назад +3

      Used MAF cleaner for many years without issue, if you notice he used a Q tip and didn't soak it with solvent. MAF Sensor on my vehicle cost $120-$150 why not try and clean it first like Eric did? They want you to buy new MAF not clean them.

    • @Travelingman-1980
      @Travelingman-1980 7 лет назад +1

      Leo Guy : As I and Wells Tech stated, it is up to the customer to have it cleaned or replaced. Wells Tech ran tests on cleaning MAFs and reviewed the results under 100× magnification, and they found the coating was damaged. That is not to say the MAF will not work after cleaning. As for cleaning with a cotton tip, it is more risky than not physically touching it. You state you have been cleaning MAFs for years, have you verified the results of cleaning versus replacing: ie, engine load % in relation to gm/s?

    • @SouthMainAuto
      @SouthMainAuto  7 лет назад +13

      Short answer is we clean while we can and replace when we have to. Some of these MAF's are 100's of dollars so if cleaning works then we do that.

    • @jimzivny1554
      @jimzivny1554 7 лет назад +2

      I've had good results cleaning maf sensors over the years, a few didn't respond and had to be replaced. The maf in my own Tahoe was cleaned over 60k ago and is still ok. I think if you used a mild approved cleaner and aren't aggressive(shop air 120psi!) most can live again. That's just my experience.

    • @throttlebottle5906
      @throttlebottle5906 7 лет назад +6

      Wells likes to sell MAF's, second they know most folks are spastic looking parts jammers and they'd break the things with the spray straw or hit them with compressed air, blowing the sensors right out :)
