  • Pembroke Mall in Virginia Beach, Virginia after over 50 years of business has been closed to be transformed into a new retail Community living project in the Town Center area of Virginia Beach. All store that had no outdoor access has been closed to make way for the changes. This video was captured shortly before the mall interior would close forever. I hope you enjoy my efforts on my second dying retail video.

It was a stab in my heart when this mall closed since I practically grew up in there back in the 80's. Quite by accident, I ate the last meal ever served there from the Chinese restaurant. They shut down the register after I paid for lunch, then shut the door behind me when I left. So many memories of that place...

@@DyingRetail It was eerie. The mall was a "liminal space" where it seemed to exist between two worlds. There was the reality of the current condition with the empty stores and lack of people- just a building of steel and stone, but you could still feel the distant laughter of kids, the music, the smell of the foods and the buzz of hurried shoppers and chattering of teens just hanging out ... all memories and ghosts. The mall was quiet for the first time in it's life: nothing left for it to do, no more tomorrows... just waiting for the final echoes of life to go silent forever.

I was in the Navy in the late 80s stationed in Norfolk. This mall was one of my get aways to feel like a regular non military person. I was just 18 years old. I love the culture of the old malls. Just to stroll and window shop and drop what money I felt I could afford. As a kid going school clothes shopping was a highlight. And I paid for my Levi jeans with lawn mowing money. Thank God for our dear malls.

Many memories around Pembroke Mall. I worked at the Sears Auto Center in 1975 as their first female tire changer. Times have certainly changed. It's sad what has transpired over the decades, but following the pandemic, retail will never be what it was. RIP Pembroke Mall ... may your new life serve you well.

Beautifully put together video. The beginning clips fascinate me. From what I heard, Pembroke was the oldest mall in Hampton Roads. My time at Pembroke Mall was most of the 90s on up to the early 2000s. I have so many sweet childhood memories that were made there! Playing skee-ball at the arcade (I remember there were two, the other being a BIG one near the old movie theater that had a ton of games & a snack bar. My favorite arcade!), watching "The Lion King" at that old-school theater with my father, having lunch at the Woolworth's cafeteria (those salisbury steak & grilled cheese plates were my favorites!), looking at the animals at the old Pet Go Round shop, shopping with my mother at the old Stein Mart, where I always loved getting b-day & Mother's Day gifts for her, eating at the old China Garden restaurant, the list goes on! That mall played such a central part in my life, there were so many wonderful memories there. It was just a regular mall, but a special place I really loved. I know time goes on & progress is needed, but it's sad that it's gone....

So many memories from my childhood... Skateboarding with my friends in the parking lot, seeing Santa as a kid, going to Game Stop at mid night when I would do the release parties for whatever game I was getting, going into FYE after getting paid at my first job and buying CDs, my friends and I going to the arcade and playing pool or DDR, hanging out with a girl I dated in high school at A Bit of England, my mom and I shopping at Sears, going to the movies... This mall was my childhood in the 90s and 2000s. I can't believe its gone. When they renovated it years back my friends and I wrote our names on some of the plywood they were using to make changes.
