Tusen Takk Sissel, the voice of an angel. Regardless of all the sad things in the world today, Here I sit, lost in the pure sound of a wonderful Soprano. It can be no wonder , that Sissel is a national treasure of Norway. Born in Bergen, the home of the great Edvard Greig, Sissel continues the heretige of beautiful sound. Thank you again Sissel, thank you
The Scandinavian countries share a long and complicated history with each others and their neighbours. This psalm began life in a Danish town, that had become more or less German and later became completely Danish again. The poem was translated to Norwegian and Swedish and Sami and sung on several different melodies. The Danish text was revised so heavily that it really became a new psalm, and now the original has come into use again. You really do not need to know any of all this. You are free to simply enjoy the singing of Kyrkjebø.
Thanks for that information it is interesting to know origins of songs particularly beautiful songs. Also nothing or nobody compares to Sissel, she is out on her own, a voice from the Gods.
I love this so much. My favourite christmas song. I love how it is truly a Scandinavian co-operation: Danish lyrics and the melody a Norwegian version of a Swedish folk tune
I read all the effusive praise for and the seemingly genuine love this voice springs in hearers, but ultimately it is all a personal response. Over the years I have responded like that to so many great voices. I don't need any of this anymore. In this one I can rest and listen until my heart stops. It's tones are all I need.
Actually I know the song by a Norwegian metal band, but this version is not bad either. A very Soulful Song! I´m from Germany and i love Norwegians! Norway is great! :-)
Sissel married her partner Ernst Ravnaas in a private ceremony in Hov church in Norway on August 13th. No guests were invited to this ceremony which were held secretly. Our congratulations goes to the newly married couple.
Lyrics ============== My heart will always wander To where our Lord was born, My thoughts will always go there And take on their true form. My longing does belong there, With the treasure of my faith; I never shall forget you, O blessed Christmas night! Oh come, and I will open My heart and my mind And sigh with longing, Enter, Jesus For this home is Your own, You bought it for yourself So I will remain faithful, With you here in my heart I’ll willingly spread branches Of palms around your crib. For you and you alone I will gladly live and die. Come, let my soul find joy In this moment of delight: To see you born right here, Deep inside my loving heart.
@MsKarin1959 This tune is not composed by Carl Nielsen; he composed the original psalm, but this is not the the original psalm. This version is based on a Norwegian/Swedish folk tune.
My poetic translation of the whole hymn into English (Sissel does verses 1, 6, and 7): 1. My heart is always wand’ring where Jesus Christ was born, my thoughts all gather thither into their foremost sum. My longing is at home there, my faith there has its prize; I never could forget you, O blessed Christmas night. 2. You, stable, are my castle, my refuge and delight, where I can learn to daily forget the world’s despite, where I can best consider in what consists my praise; when mem’ry of his cradle goes in my heart and stays. 3. For why was not some palace bedecked for you, some hall? For you had everything, Lord, at your command and call. Why were you, God, not covered with light as with a robe? Why did not run to kiss you the kings of all the globe? 4. Why did you not the heavens unfurl forth for your tent, and burn the starry torches, great Hero of the heav’ns? Why did the mighty angels not as your guard appear, as you in silken blankets lay beautiful and dear? 5. The lion has its cavern, the place where it can rest; Your eye is on the swallow, you make secure its nest; And e’en the little sparrow for shelter need not pray- Shall God, the King of Heaven, then hide himself in hay? 6. Oh come, Lord! I will open my heart, my soul, my mind; and full of longing sighs, say: Come, Jesus, come within! To you this home’s not foreign, for you yourself me bought. So, Jesus, please, be swaddled within my faithful heart. 7. With joy I’ll strew palm branches around your place of rest. I’ll live and die for you, then with you be ever blest. Oh come, and let my soul find its hour of true delight, That you came in my heart, Lord; with me you did unite.

Sissel's voice is clear as an angel and this song is wonderful, but something about this arrangement is nothing short of mesmerizing. Goosebumps!

I've been listening to Evanescence and their lead singer's voice is so similar to Sissel's.
Lovely version - this is actually of Danish origin - lyrics by bishop Hans Adolph Brorson (1731) and music by Carl Nielsen (1919)
in this version the lyrics is by Brorson, but the music an old norwegian folk tune, but the Nielsen version is also beautiful
Thanks for the clarification Ivar :-)
