I wanted more power out of my bindings and this seriously delivered, while staying comfortable and allowing a ton of mobility. Bottom line, I don't have to strap down as tight as I needed to in my old bindings, yet I feel a lot more power and control, and never even think about strap tightness. Strap never feels wrong, it's just on there perfect. Jumping and jibbing felt more natural and easy, possibly because I learned everything on stiff bindings back in the day. Safe to say these bindings were a huge upgrade for me and I wish I had tried them sooner, it's obvious now my old bindings were holding back my backcountry riding. Before these bindings, my Niche Maelstrom 163 felt unrideably stiff - now it's the perfect backcountry board and super easy to ride. The only difference was the bindings. Backstory: I bought these on Avran's advice when I commented that my Nitro Team bindings didn't seem to be giving me the edge power I used to get from my old gear back in the day. I rode 100+ days a year from around 1995 to 2005 and was a bomber and also rode a ton of park. Now I'm old but still get after it pretty hard. 6' 230. I rode the same old gear for so many years that I know nothing about how to pick a binding today. But I'm pumped on this one.
What boots are you wearing?

Rome is the king of bindings
Oh yes! And this one is The King of kings. Only problem is Rome doesn't make it in S/M size anymore.
@Rome Snowboards please make it in smaller sizes again!
I switched back from Switchbacks to get (my 3rd pair of, and) the last S/M Targas on the market.
@@SnowboardingJapan I still run Targa from 2018. If you need a smaller size just go to the womens brass bindings
Installed these on my Yes Greats Uninc today. Driving to the mountain now. Been riding Burton Malavita, Burton Genesis, and Union Atlas bindings on my various boards. Hoping they rip
What's the verdict? Would love to hear your thoughts compared to the other bindings you mentioned.
I have the same board / binding set up - works well on the steeps and in gnarly terrain. I've used the bindings on my Ride Peaceseeker as well, and they're good there, too. I've not ridden many different bindings - had my last Burton Cartels for about 12 years - so not much to compare with, but the Cleavers have been great so far for me
@@huntsman670 appreciate the input! Even 12yo Cartels are still awesome bindings. How would you rate the response of the Cleaver vs your Cartels?
@@m3dbsI agree on the Cartels - I cracked one of them unfortunately so needed a replacement! I'm not a binding expert in any way but I find the Cleavers a bit stiffer, and a bit more of a powerful response. They're ultra adjustable so loads of options to get the feel you want. I'm still fiddling with mine each trip I take them on. Good shock absorption too - great for old knees and bones like mine
@@huntsman670 that is great info! Thank you! I have Rome Targa and DOD, but the Cleaver looks like what I'm after. Really appreciate the feedback. My old knees appreciate it too. Haha
Thanks for the review ! What would you choose between these bindings and the Jones Apollo for a hard-charging type of rider on a K2 Alchemist? what would be the main difference between these bindings? Specifically looking at power transfer edge to edge and board feel?
Skatetech is the big difference which effects the power control.
Hello, please tell me. Which mounts should I buy for Rome National 2022-23? I look towards Bataleon Atom, Rome Black Label, Katana, Cleaver.
I'm looking at the Cleaver, but I have Adidas Accerra boots (flex 8) and I don't know if these bindings will be too stiff. Need all-mountain set)
Before that there were Tehcnine fastenings

@@AngrySnowboarderlol
If you had to choose between Rome cleaver and Union atlas pro for hard charging, carvs?
Cleaver.
Would you recommend this binding for a Rome ravine 155 size 11 men’s boot vans invado pro. I do groomers and powder, no park.
You looking for stiff response and performance?
Thinking about upgrading bindings for next season. Originally had Union Force and Bent Metal Transfers a few years back, then switched to Burton Stepons for the past 2 seasons (because I'm old and lazy) , but probably switching back to standard bindings. I'm a bigger rider on a Gnu Gremlin and Libtech Stump Ape. Leaning Rome Cleavers right now but also thinking about Katanas for the asym or NOW Drive Pro/CX for the skatetech. I've never tried Skatetech before, any input on how it rides? Basically my question is Rome or NOW/Jones?
Forgot to mention the Bataleon Astro too, seems to essentially be the Cleaver.. still unsure about full wrap vs asym.. mostly ride groomers and glades, not so much park..
Sounds like you just need the Cleavers.
Hey again avran! Lol
What makes you personally like the black labels asym over these guys?
They fit my style.
@@AngrySnowboarder
What is the style of the ardvark himself?
the pivots is in stock position and i feel overpressure on footlift zone. Should i move them up or down what do you guys think?
Grab a screw driver and start seeing what works for you.
I would really like to upgrade eventually to a pair of these, probably a bit outside of my skill level right now but that's cool. Thanks for the review man, spray 'em all!
Grab a set of DOD's it's the little brother.
I have Rome Targas from 2019, and last year's Katana. I far prefer the Targa, but they no longer make it. Would you consider the Cleaver to be comparable to the Targa?
To an extent.
Are these overkill on an Artifact Pro? Not enjoying my 2020 Forces on it
Yes
Avran, what’s your best comparable Ride Binding?
C10.
is this "softer" than the 2023 cleaver because of the new instep strap?
Not softer just different.
Apart from the Ankle Strap, what separates this years model with the 21/22+
Different base foam.
Same foot bed as astro fullwrap? Just as damp as the astro fullwrap?
It’s thinner
Good fit for a flagship type board?
Absolutely
@@AngrySnowboarder awesome! Thanks!
Would these pair better than a katana for a flagship?
Depends
@AngrySnowboarder I was leaning towards the katana seeing that you said it’s basically a black label. You just have me questioning with the kleaver review
Will that new strap help folks that feel like their strap is crushing their lower foot when they flex forward into toe side turns? I feel like these new age straps all kinds do that.
The strap itself won't it's the pivot mount that will fix some of those issues. That should let you recenter where it sits so it's higher or lower depending on where you need it.
These or Katanas for a Yes Typo?
Depends on how stiff you want it.
So it has become even more of a comfort binding? I'd put this up there with the Re:flex in terms of comfort, but far more responsive. I think they've went the wrong way with the ankle strap though. The Bataleon Infinity are so much more responsive, and right up there for comfort. You can get a really locked in feel with the pivot up, but there are certainly more response bindings. You can mount it 4x4 without adjustment, so it's sort of a medium disk... and does have some flex/feel like a mini. It's a great binding, but I wish they offered a bit more response in their top-of-the-line product. I really don't think this is advanced/expert only, solid intermediates could benefit from this great binding.
You mentioned that these new versions are more durable. Are there durability issues with previous models? I’ve been looking at discounted cleavers from last season, but this made me curious.
There's a small screw issue with some of the first gen.
Would you say it's that dumb to put cleaver highbacks on a DOD?
No.
Just got them, they’re insanely soft I don’t really understand.
Can it be compared to Bataleon Atom and Astro full wrap? Which is stiffer/more damp/better binding overall?
Closer to the Astro Full Wrap. The Astro has better dampening from the foot pad and the heel strap is better as well, it also feels a little stiffer in that strap. But the highback on the Cleaver feels more powerful.
why do you do binding recommendations for bindings?
Everyone’s foot is different and might not like a specific binding, it might not be available or at a price someone can afford, etc
Think of them as “comparable bindings”
Put bindings on top of your bindings for maximum bindings bind.
Extra bindage
No one wants lonely bindings.
You never want pre mature release. It can be quite an embarrassing situation.
only clewks prematurely eject out of their bindings.
That’s how you end up with a 25 year std.
