Excellent Huell Houser presentation. I got off the (USS Chicago CG11) after 4 years of service while the ship was in drydock in 1974. I now live in Huntington Beach California. 🚢

My dad was also on the USS Peleliu (in the 80s) and we stayed in the naval housing that went to Elizabeth Hudson Elementary School. How sad that it's all gone now.

Me too! I was a plank owner and we went straight from commisioning at Ingalls shipyard to the yard in Long Beach to have the ship modified. Took off the 5 inch guns, etc.

I sure do miss watching his show on tv.. i would always watch him.. now I am always asking myself what would he be doing right now in California.. he did so much work and made a huge impact and it wasn't about money... it was about history and how important it was.. he definitely went out a Legend .. 805...

There was Naval Housing at PV Dr N and Western. An entire community of family housing for the Navy. When they closed the Naval Yard, the abandoned the housing. These were move in ready homes and the Navy let them deteriorate. What a waste. They could have sold the homes and made millions.

I grew up about an hour or so north of NAVSTA Long Beach and even considered orders there after boot camp in '92.
Returning to California in '98 for reserve duty, I encountered a fenced-off base with a reserve center shoehorned under a concrete overpass.
Seeing Huell take a WTF stance with L.A.'s bureaucrats and receiving the usual mealy-mouthed non-answers is a perfect example of beancounters with no actual skin in the game.

I was stationed on the USS Paul F. Foster (DD-964) moored at the Mole Pier 1989 - 1993. See how he tried to put his hands in his pocket at 3:00 but then his Navy tradition to "never put your hands in your pockets" while in uniform kicked in haha.

I was stationed their for two year and I loved it. I was and still am sad to see it go. The US should be opening bases not closing them. The military has been the heart of this country for generations and I feel that their is a direct correlation between shrinking of our military and decay of out nation. Just saying.

Y this is close, its a memories at World War, maybe the buildings are old need remodelling and the Barracks, too old. Open it and dont waste this historical Long Beach Naval Base Station.

My dad was assigned to the USS New Jersey for his last 5 years of service and retired in 86 after 21 years in the Navy. Spent a lot of time on this base shopping at the Exchange and Commissary as well as using the pool, gym, and arcade. Also church every Sunday. We practically grew up on this base.. so many childhood memories. Good ol days..

I was on the USS NEW Jersey BB-62 during her Vietnam era. We departed Long Beach for Vietnam and returned to Long Beach from Vietnam. Our shore time in Long Beach was short.

Informative video. Thank you for posting. I sense where your heart lies as a tax payer. You are correct. I am not happy the Base closed. What a waste! This is my hometown. This is History. A Navy town. I am in San Diego now. I work with many DoD folks who were displaced when the Base close. They rather have stayed in Long Beach. Just why did this happen? No logical reason. I am not happy they closed MCAS El Toro either.
