  • In this episode I focus on the Bebop Dominant Scale or How To Use Chromaticism On A Dominant Seventh Chord. I break down the scale which is Bb C D Eb F G Ab A or 1 2 3 4 5 6 b7 maj7. I also explain how to imply other chords over a dominant seventh chord. So over Bb7 I am implying an Fmin7 to Bb7 or as is sometimes called twoing the V. In certain cases I use a secondary dominant V7/ii before the ii chord.

Hi Mr. Beato I just wanted to thank you for this excellent lesson. By far the clearest and most concise explanation Ive seen on incorporating other chords with chromaticism over a single chord. I was able to use it right away, you're a great and knowledgable teacher. Thank you so much!!!

This is soooo cool and thank you so much for this share. I can see how Parker would wow with the various impied chords he might hint at during a solo and keep everyone guessing where he'd go next. No wonder Miles was so blown away lol

Great material and great demos. The tone wasn't anything that I would use, but it didn't bother me as it apparently did some of the other folks that commented on this video. However, I was frustrated by the rushed and, to me at least, incomprehensible presentation. For someone unfamiliar with the theory, it was impossible to take any valuable pointers away from the video. Very little usable context.

    • @freecitizen2760

If you are “unfamiliar with the theory”, then learn it and then come back.
This video is obviously not for beginners.
      That should be obvious.

Excellent material - as usual. Very generous with your knowledge. Would have loved it if you did the whole backcycle with chromatics. It would make for one killer long run! I suppose if you had a static chord like vamp, it would allow you the time to pull it off. Otherwise, a one bar of two - five ( five of two, etc.) would suffice to add enough chromatic spice to satisfy the ear. Your work is deeply appreciated, Rick. THANK YOU!

Great lesson. But I find the 12-string effect, while a lovely sound, confusing when trying to play along because of the octave jumps. Everything one plays sounds different on a 12-string, even tho possibly
cooler. But in a lesson, when I move my fingers the same as you, I'd expect to hear the same sound. Also, double-stops are almost indecipherable.

It would help, though, if you didn't try to play and say everything so fast. You have nothing to prove. You obviously know your stuff. Also, a clean tone on guitar is easier to hear.

It might be difficult at first - but if you follow his advice and try to follow what he is explaining, (play the video through again as many times as it takes in my case) - it is worth it IMHO to make the effort and you can learn far more that way. Your ear will soon get used to anything unfamiliar in the guitar sound as well - I'm not a young person and have already learned far more than I would ever have expected at first from Rick's channel. Persevere brother - and you'll see what I mean...

I appreciate the dense material. It is a video after all, so we can pause and rewind when necessary. I like to review a video first before sitting down to watch with instrument in hand. A good instructional video should be something you can rewatch and get multiple insights out of.
