There is a lot of stress in Puerto Rico. Many outsiders don't know that for years, internal issues have turned friends against friends and family against family. This can change one day when the ignorant people admit that ketchup never goes on pasteles.

I am glad you were able to spend a month to travel all over the island and enjoy its beauty. That definitely seems like a sufficient amount of time to visit. I am sorry you didn’t feel welcome at times. Generally, Puerto Ricans are very welcoming. However, as you mentioned things have been difficult for the people there with rising prices and gentrification.

Puerto Ricans are awesome partying people and unfriendly? id say NOT ! You must always keep in mind that as a gringo or foreigner we stand out and look, speak, and maybe act different. Apply that very same rule to the way we treat others in the upper US who are different. Ponder that for a few minutes ! Every country has their own problems or barriers but in comparison to the upper US I feel far more safer and accepted in PR than the US.Thats a fact.

No me importa. Me dejaron sin hogar y los considero mis enemigos.

Regarding the unwelcome part I am from PR and I am very light skinned as are many in my family cousins ect.. So I don't know what to say regarding that experience you had I am at least as light skinned as you are and as a matter of fact I know several blond blue eyed Puertoricans as well. I will also add that there are many other near by countries that just have not been able to contend with high crime in terms of having drug lords, kidnappings and more too much to list Puerto Rico does have crime but no where near some other places the island can be considered safe. It does show that you have a preference elsewhere and thats ok there is nothing wrong with that but you will never be as secure regarding crime as you might be on the island. Another good thing is that food, drugs and other has to contend with American laws and regulations making that safe'er as well. The island has offices of the American FBI, Coast Guard and so on and so forth when other countries have had to seek their assistance in one way or another.. / Anyway I see the unwelcome thing unusual maybe it may have to do with behaving as a tourist rather than blending in for ex there are European countries that dislike Americans because of the way they sometimes behave and I can see how locals in PR may feel similarly towards tourists but I know its not about complexion

sorry you had such a bad experience with the man stopping your dancing (and general discrimination)...not sure if it was the case in this instance but I feel like the lack of education is often causing narrow-minded radical traditionalism. I hope it will change in the next years. I didn't enjoy the beat of the edit as much but I like that you categorized it into little chapters, to create an easy to follow structure. I like how you shot it though...Thumbs up and looking forward to your next adventure!

Too much ignorance taught down to the younger generation, but what they fail to see, is that their leaders and certain people are their worst enemies, and in fact not the gringos or Americans/Europeans.
I had to put one of them ignorant ones in check today, over comments I shared about how the island needs to become a state in order for them to have a better chance in fighting for their rights as Americans that they are. PR leaders can not be trusted with bottles of water sent by the mainland US to help with emergency crisis, let alone with running a country... If PR were too ever be independent, it would be the Mexico of the Caribbean, with the cartels running everything, a total disgrace. It's as it is and drug kingpins are almost impossible to deal with on the island. Ppl need to smell the coffee, and wake the help up in PR

As a Puertorriqueña I can understand many things in this video. I can't relate to feeling unwelcome in Puerto Rico because we'll lol I'm Puertorriqueña but I can relate feeling unwelcome in some areas and states in the United States because of racism and social class prejudice. What I can say is I feel more safe in Puerto Rico than in the USA specially as a woman and with kids. If I lived in PR I would definitely let my kids walk to school by themselves like I did in PR as a kid without feeling unsafe as where in the USA kids and women are not safe. The person that made you feel you weren't allowed to dance Bomba is a hater and most likely does not even appreciate being open minded about the world as a whole, but not because one person made you feel uncomfortable means all of us are like that and you did mention most of us are friendly and welcoming. PR to us is the most beautiful island in the world because well...we feel at home and I'm sure other people from other countries think their country is the most beautiful of all. I'm sure there isn't an exact most beautiful place in the world as a whole because it's all based on personal likes and experiences and that's the beauty, that we all think differently. What I did disagree was that one month is not enough to see a small island that's covered with different geologic features. PR is not only beaches and jungle, it has desert fields it has hidden caves it has underwater caves and it has many other small island like Mona, Monito, Caja de muerto, Icacos island, Gilligan's island and so many other small and untouched islands that people may not even know about. My personal opinion is I would never say I wouldn't go back somewhere again unless I felt in danger or extremely unwelcomed. No need to apologize, if they don't understand it's their loss. Everyone has the right to their personal opinion liked it or not. Overall I loved the video and it was very entertaining! Hope you return again🙂

I do feel for people every time I’m there. I have been humbled by how we live in the States. I have met Boricuas here in the States and they tell me their reasons of leaving the island, it makes sense why they have migrated. I hope and pray life gets better for Puerto Rico.

Spent 20 years traveling the world, from Korea to Europe to Kuwait. Every country has it’s unique culture and customs. They’re both welcoming and friendly and some times the people can be overbearingly protective of the culture & customs. You’ll be very surprised how in Mexico North Americans are taking over small towns making it very uncomfortable & unaffordable for the locals. What you got was a taste of rebellion against something that resembles you. What you should have probably added from your perspective was “understanding” and forgiveness; you literally did the same thing the man who told you not to dance did. You literally painted the islands people with the same brush.

I understand that point very well and the fact that there is a context of tension which may make simple social interactions complicated. But let's be honest, anyone would feel unwelcomed if a strange person who has no idea who you are rudely interrupts you like that. That's the kind of experience that will influence how you feel about that social environment no matter how open you are to their perspective. It becomes emotionally negative experience and what Diana always does is that she expresses her emotions as they are, without sugar coding. It's always her raw personal experience that she shares, not her experience filtered by political correctness.

    • @trespatines305
      @trespatines305 Год назад +3

Why doesn’t Diana actually explain in detail how that situation REALLY happened and bring some clarity as to why they might have felt offended by her trying to dance Bomba which is Afro-Puerto Rican culture ?
If you were just dancing and they asked you to stop because you started dancing right in front of the band as they were playing and taking away from their art, then I could see why they’d take it personal.
But to say that they rudely told you not to dance without any context and just saying they were rude to you isn’t the complete story.

As a Boricua, I have to say that you are right. It is sad, but the reason this connection is not there for you and other tourists is that Puerto Rico is very Americanized. A lot of the influence from the US is there, and it doesn't feel authentic or traditional anymore. It feels like Florida, like visiting Miami. Back in the 50's when it was more poor, and there was more farm land, it felt more authentic, and like paradise. Now is too crouded, too much traffic, the youth forgot the values our grandparents had, respect and humility are not there anymore, and Reggueaton is the worse compared to the traditional earlier music. Now the area is expensive, and too much crime. I know because I was raised there and visit all of the time my family there.

I have to say, if you did not feel welcome and you already set your mind that you will not return, I have to believe that no one is really going to miss you. The unrealistic expectations, ungratefulness, and victim mentality of some people (not saying it because of you, but I really am) will never let them understand that the World does not revolve around them and everyone is entitled to their own personality. BTW, did you let TSA know so that they will stop you at the entry point next time you come visit?😂🤣
