Woke Up today Jan 1st, first video that I see and spoke to myself "wow, how the Master Mike did know that yesterday was my birthday" Thanks for this gift Master
Beautiful. Catchy riff! Love how the bell accents on the big apple establish a theme without being predictable, very tasteful choice in not accenting every chord change. The fade out was perfectly timed and just long enough. The form naturally sounds like it wants to keep looping and evolving. Great solo as always!
probably the tastiest thing i've ever heard you play. (i don't mean that in a snarky way. i love your positive attitude). love the big apple dark rides too! good job.
His facial expressions , feels , smoothness , touch and play is so fascinating . No one can ever surpass him , which is for sure , and no one could ever get that type of feel too . But they can other feels that can be comfortable for them , and to others .
Ok, I listened to this on my lunch hour, then couldn’t wait to get back to it and listen again....it just speaks to me....shades of King Crimson, a hint of Zep all with a today feel....I really dig it!
Also nice to see a drumming video where it's not *JUST* displaced snare for the sake of it and trying to play as quietly as possible as fake "feel". Plot Twist - you can have tons of feel even when playing really loud.
This video is truly inspiring Mike! You have taught me a new approach to a rock song and i will never forget it. I too would forever cherish a lesson as well. Curious what shells and tuning are using in this song? Truly sounds beautiful. You have made a drum kit sound orchestral and majestic. To listen to it and not watch it as i have the second time through took me away from here to a musical paradise. I too want the album. Thank you for the gift this video has given me.
It's a stylistic comment, but I wish the drums were a bit hotter in the mix... Loved the presence behind the kit. Definitely something I would love to play myself (in a band setting). ps. Loved hearing a Big Apple in a performance setting. I've been looking at one of these, and this is the first time I've heard the 22" in a realistic context...
If meinl could take a 22" heavy ride, make the bell a little more substantial, and then give it the sand blasting treatment to darken it up a little bit...I would buy THAT ride right now. Just putting it out there.
Have you ever find yourself on the situation of enjoyjng something so much you need to start throwing blasphemous words all over the place? Like goddam fucking shit this motherfuckers are so fucking good, they are blowing my mind so fucking bad I WILL START YELLING ALL THIS JOY, FUCK YEAH MAN!!!!!
Actually, upon closer inspection, the main ghosty groove I think is in 7/8, while the harder rock section afterwards with the syncopated snare bits may be 7/4 like you said. It's all 7s is what's important. Then after that is the djenty bridge section with the rim hits I think is in 4/4 just counted in triplets, and there's a groove after that which sounds like 5/4 to my ears. Then after that it goes back into the main 7/8 groove.
ScorpionLP Yeah, I've gotten much better at distinguishing 4s from 8s and 16s since this comment. My guitarist made me learn a tool song, had to kick my ass into gear with time signatures.
JackBluebee Which one? Tool is really tough. I'm still rocking 4/4 time, I think I have still so much to learn in 4/4 that I can't even consider to try something in odd time ^^
Unreal playing. If this is "Beofre", I can't wait to see what "Aftre" sounds like!!
SiblingVlog Lol best comment
Kkkkk
This is like a summary of what you get if you learn from Mike. Rudiment controll, dynamics, independence, serving the music.
Oh man, this is absolutely fantastic. Been looking forward to hearing more from this project ever since it was first announced! Right up my alley.
WOW!!! Incredible!! Fluid groove...I could listen to this all day..
Mike Johnston is seriously one of my favorite people ever and I can't wait to hear more from his band!
that big apple ride is unreal.

Mike has such a superb feel and style, it seems that he mixes elements of Jazz with Rock.
great feel, dynamics, truly a pleasure to watch
I absolutely LOVED IT!
Found that beautiful psychedelic project on Spotify but never thought to find Mike Johnston behind the drums, until I got here!

No words. This is amazing. Mike is amazing. Music is amazing. Drumming is amazing.
Always great seeing Mike!
Might want to fix the descriptio though. As he said, he's using the Transition Ride.
Thanks for the video Meinl!
Yep! We caught that right about the time you did. Maybe a few seconds after you did, actually. ;-) Thanks for watching! - Chris / Meinl
AlterBridge11 the description says it in there...
Tomas Haake - "...but I use it as a crash."

OMG that bell sound at 1:54! SO MEAN!
Fantastic as always!
Really enjoyed your playing on this!
Ok I didn't know what to expect going into it, but this guy knows what hes doing. Awesome player!
He planted the seeds to this during his PASIC solo. He watered them, and now those seeds grew into this marvelous creation.
Mike, that was great. Love it.
Beautiful utilization of 7/8
That fill at 2:20 is GOLD
Oh boy, this was too good! Love the dynamics.
I don't care what anyone says, smoothest mother hugger alive!
That ride sounds like raindrops sliding down a window.
So much finesse Mike!!! Love it!
Superb drumming!
A lot of influence from his PASIC solo in here! love the adaptation to fit this song, seamless as heck
Powerful Mike Johnston!
I’ve waited so patiently for this. ❤️❤️❤️
Consider the whole album sold!!! 👌🤘🙌👏💪🔥
Very nice feel brother.
his move and melodic articulation like Brian Blade. so nice!
Mike fera d+ referência total! 👍👌👏🇧🇷 Lembra se-bateras unidos jamais será vencido!

Hey Sean, I went to one of Mikes camps in September. Can’t recommend it enough!

3:10 - such a tasty little buzz roll...
lovely
Yes! Finally!
2:26 👌
Awsome!
Agreed Alexandr. Such a killer player and even better person.
Is that a 20" kick he's using? It seems pretty small.
Super👍

You had my utmost attention for the whole 5 minutes.. Unfortunately it ended. Think I better go buy the album when it's out :)
man, I might have to get a transition ride
I just bought a 22" vintage pure instead.
If meinl could take a 22" heavy ride, make the bell a little more substantial, and then give it the sand blasting treatment to darken it up a little bit...I would buy THAT ride right now. Just putting it out there.
I'd just like the snare more powerful. Other than that... where can I download this?
What type of heads are you using, Mike? I got an Aquarian Triple Threat snare head as a birthday gift in July and I absolutely love it!
reminds me of a mix between Volto! and Porcupine Tree...definitely not a bad thing :)
👏👏👏👏👏💥

Meinl have the best drummers hands down!
I only wish Tony Royster Jr could switch to Meinl.
Yeah teach

7/4 ?
Kotow Boy sounds like 7/8 to me, but I'm terrible at this guessing time signatures game.

JackBluebee Pretty close. Mike said in his latest live lesson that the whole song is in 7/8 except for the "Bridge" which is in 5/8.

This is a weird question but do you know what guitar was used on this track ? Sounds like an SG or Les Paul to me...
Kotow Boy It was a strat with EMGs
yaaaaasssssssssssssssssssss
I think you mean "Before." That must be a typo.
Tardi Grade Nope, it's Beofre :)
Mike how hope you have given your life to Jesus,so we can play in heaven
Has a bit of a Keith Carlock feel during the first half.
So he's not just the facebook boss.... He's also a very good drummer! Congratz Mark.
miguel padrao Mike dude, Mike! haha
miguel padrao who's Mark?
mark zuckerberg! I think they look like.... but apprently i'm the only one.... sorry. that was an attempt of joke...
miguel padrao it was pretty vague, I'm not sure anyone would get it. Still I applaud the attempt.
ThunderBudda
Brincando na bateria😂
they should have a vocalist , what say..?
Beefaroni.
Bruh
That snare desperately needs a turn or two on the lugs.
