My maternal grandfather served in East India company by changing his surname to a non-Brahmin one because of the requirements. He had documented his service in World War 2 (in Italy) and was active during the partition in Punjab and Jammu-Kashmir. He retired shortly after, retuned to Nepal and living a long pensioned life of almost 6 decades. He passed away at the age of 90.

@@Kroner1941ou can see the wikipedia about gorkha regiment, during the beginning of the recuritment it was mostly chhettri(kshtriya) and others too but mostly chhetris. But after the indian rebellion of 1857 , gorkhas were used to suppress the rebellion but fearing the same religion and brahminical influence on military assuming hindu caste being susceptible to brahminical values , they discouraged the khas groups and recruited from tribes like magar and gurung who were nature worshippers or buddhists. They feared that during the next rebellion the gorkhas would support the indians so .... Now the colonization is over , any caste can be recruited

@@trevorsam2647 well colonization was not only about occupying third world countries. Western countries like Britain wanted to exploit the far off colonies , it's resources etc... It's no doubt it used whatever available manpower viz gurkhas etc...to gain their hold over the Indian subcontinent. Brahmins like Tatya Tope , Rani Laxmi Bai were at the forefront of Indian freedom struggle. It's only people from lower economic backgrounds who had volunteered to support the British against its own people. Such people are a total disgrace to the country. Gurkhas because of total non existent economic policies in Nepal would serve in any batallions of a country for their livelihood. They are good to be hired as mercenaries. No doubt they considered joining the Wagner group in the ongoing Russo- Ukraine war. They were also used in the Jalianwala Baugh massacre. Whether we should support them in our country is a point to be considered since they are here only for their economic interests?

They fought wars won badges and awards like Battle Honours in Uri sector in 1947/8, Ladakh in 1962, Jammu and Kashmir in 1965 and 1971. Additionally, they have been awarded three Param Vir Chakras, 33 Maha Vir Chakras, and 84 Vir Chakras.

As of 2020, there are approximately 32,000 soldiers serving in 40 battalions under seven Gurkha regiments. Out of all regiments, 1st Gurkha Rifles, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 8th, 9th and 11th Gurkha Rifles are serving under the Indian Army with around 800 soldiers in each of them. Secondly, the British preferred Marathas, Rajputs, Sikhs/Jats/Punjabis, and Gurkhas because of their belief in the nonsensical "MARTIAL RACE THEORY". Maybe, It's time India reconsiders this British-era thinking and divisions. Ukrainian Farmers are raining hell on Martial Ruskis.

@@IndianArma Actually, they are very different. You have rightly pointed out the history, but there are some finer points. Ukraine was never a country. Hitler and Stalin divided Polish territory among themselves. This east Polish territory (which now forms western Ukraine) was fused with the eastern Russian territory to create Ukraine (There is a long version of how this happened, but this is the gist. It was a blunder by the then Communist regime). West Ukraine was always culturally different. West is Christian and agricultural, while the East is Russian Orthodox and industrial). It is Western Ukraine that is hyper-national and contributing most to the war. They are not even Slavs.

If the principle is martial race theory and its rejection, you can make a far better argument against is by not using the example of people who are not racially divergent and are in fact the same people, culturally, religiously and racially, you could have picked a better example. Also, to say that certain groups of people don't have a certain predelictiom to certain things based on a variety of factors such as social conditioning, the lifestyles of the people, the sort of climate they come from, etc and their cultural experience with a particular field including warfare, is a just ignoring facts, calling it 'martial race theory' or whatever has a hint of 19th century European gene supremacist thinking which is a whole other conversation, but certain groups of people are better at certain things, to recognise these differences does not make one racist.

Lol, who tf said not recruiting Gurkha soldiers from Nepal is an issue for the Indian Army. Firstly, we have enough Indian Gorkhas who can be recruited. Secondly, it's a myth that Gurkha units are superior than other units and IA will collapse without them. We have Rajputana, Kumaoni, Dogra, Assamese, Naga, Ladakhi, Maratha, etc units who are equally capable soldiers. It's not the troops but the officers that matter. Since the Gurkha Rifles and Sikh Regiments have a long history, the cream of graduating officers prefer to be in those regiments.
If you still believe in Martial Races then remember that Tribal Naxalites of Chattisgarh, Odisha and Andhra have fought the paramilitary for decades with nothing but crude bombs and bolt action Rifles. The officer cadre of Naxalites are more efficient than IPS officers who command units.

During the period from 1800 to 1820, the British Empire was involved in several wars and military campaigns across different regions. Here is a list of some of the significant conflicts:
    1. Napoleonic Wars (1803-1815): The British Empire, along with its allies, fought against the forces of Napoleon Bonaparte's French Empire. These wars were a series of conflicts that spanned Europe and other parts of the world, including naval battles, land campaigns, and colonial struggles.
    2. Anglo-Maratha Wars (1803-1818): The British East India Company fought a series of wars against the Maratha Empire in India. These conflicts resulted in the gradual annexation of Maratha territories and the establishment of British control over large parts of India.
    3. Anglo-Mysore Wars (1799, 1800-1801, 1803-1804): The British Empire fought a series of wars against the Kingdom of Mysore in southern India, primarily led by the ruler Tipu Sultan. These conflicts resulted in the defeat of Tipu Sultan and the final annexation of Mysore by the British.
    5. Fourth Anglo-Dutch War (1780-1784): Although it started before 1800, this war continued into the early 19th century. The British Empire fought against the Dutch Republic, resulting in British victories and the capture of several Dutch colonies, including Cape Colony (South Africa) and Dutch East Indies (Indonesia).
    6. Anglo-Nepalese War (1814-1816): The British East India Company engaged in a war with the Gorkha Kingdom (Nepal). The conflict ended with the signing of the Treaty of Sugauli, which led to the cession of territories to the British and the recruitment of Gorkha soldiers into the British army.
    7. First Anglo-Burmese War (1824-1826): Although it started after 1820, this war is worth mentioning as it was a significant conflict involving the British Empire. The British fought against the Burmese Empire, leading to the annexation of territories in present-day Myanmar (Burma) and the imposition of British control.
These are just a few examples of the wars and conflicts in which the British Empire was engaged during the period from 1800 to 1820. The British Empire was involved in various other military campaigns, both within and beyond its colonial territories, during this time.
As an expanding empire then, it was dealing with one of the conqueror 'Napeleon', who did not trust the British, on its boundaries. It was a different situation as Europe was very unstable back then. British recruited militaries from nearby regions, such as Gurkhas, Sikhs. They were always loyal. They played important role for British as well as for the establishment of the present India. At present, the world is multipolar and we see multiple geopolitical issues with neighbouring countries. Now, we need to understand 'daju bhai ko jhagada ma bahira ko manche khusi'. Those people who conquered India and recruited Gurkhas were always on the profit side and still following the same story. They are on the advantage side as always. We need to think how to utilise those energy to build our own countries.

Actually, the British genuinely believed in the ridiculous MARTIAL RACE THEORY. Lord Roberts was its architect. It was not just incorporating vanquished forces. They genuinely considered tall, fair, blue-eyed individuals to make better soldiers (not just as warriors but also discipline-wise). Hence, Pathans, Rajputs, Sikhs, Gurkhas and Marathas were their preferred stock. The Indian army was reformed in 1956, but British elements remained. Even in the current scenario, the North has more representation in the army. That said, one needs to understand that the rest of India has had better economic opportunities in other fields, and the army is not the sole benchmark of patriotism.

Historically, the terms "Gurkha" and "Gorkhali" were synonymous with "Nepali", which originates from the hill principality Gorkha Kingdom, from which the Kingdom of Nepal expanded under Prithvi Narayan Shah.[7][8] The name may be traced to the medieval Hindu warrior-saint Guru Gorakhnath[9] who has a historic shrine in Gorkha District. The word itself derived from Go-Raksha (Nepali: गोरक्षा i.e., 'Protector(रक्षा) of cows(गो')), raksha becoming rakha (रखा). Rakhawala means 'protector' and is derived from raksha as well.

Those army was composed of mainly Magar, Chettri and some brahmin like kalu pandey. Other than magar, castes like rai, limbu, gurung never supported the campaign of prithvi Narayan shah. Never assisted that campaign. In different Anglo Nepalese war, more than 95% were Chettri, magar, etc. How come other castes came to known as Gorkhas. Since Prithwi Narayan Shah was the king of entire Nepal, so British needed a permission from Nepal's supreme Authority to do so. What rulers of Nepal did was letting various tribes of Nepal to enroll in the British Army and die for British cause instead it's own country.
Gorkhali Army (without Rais,Limbus, Gurung) successfully conquered Rai,Limbus and other Himalayan tribes & made them to live under Gorkha dominion.
War cannot be win by bravery alone infact intelligence, economy, weapons, training and strategy play more role in winning the war which Kirats, Gurung and Tamang lack then.
Newars are Kathmandu Valley based people who are economically & socially much forward than above mentioned Tribesmen. So Joining British Army as mercenaries was never required for them.

Army's gorkha crisis is done by China which has instructed Nepal to stop lending Nepalese gorkha to India. It would have happened anyways eventually, as the communists in Nepal have tilted towards China. All I can say is US and UK are also watching this alignement and Nepal is going to become another Pakistan soon as these powers start meddling to ensure Nepal doesn't fall into the Chinese axis. India of course will play its huge part in ensuring that. So this crisis is temporary and if anyone tells you it is because of reforms in India's armed forces recuritment, ignore them or see if they are Chinese propaganda agents. China is a failed state. While identifying races for their phenotypical traits might be highly politically incorrect, we can at least say there are cultural distinctions that make some very amenable to hardy & physically demanding roles that can be observed in other countries of the world.

Don’t accept it, it’s ok. The most unfortunate thing is the the communist party rules Nepal. These communists hate Hindus. Indians and Nepalis are the same people. However as far as the communists are one of the two main political parties in Nepal relationships between india and Nepal will only get worse. The reason is because the communists hate Hindus.

I have seen lots of immature comments like Nepalese Gurkhas will be employed in Chinese PLA. It is not feasible as PLA is army of Communist Party not of China it cannot allow any non communist to serve in it. Nepal govt is simply spreading this rumour to bargain with India. Additionaly any Nepalese does not require permission to take job in India. They can just travel to UP or Bihar and join the Agnipath scheme.

Gurkha rule of Uttarakhand from 1790 till 1814 was the most brutal enslavement of any Indian population, they massacred half the population from Kumaon and Garhwal, sold children along their mothers to different mzlm people in Haridwar harki pauri, brutal Gorkha military rulers banned women from talking to anyone outside their homes when caught bre@sts were cut off, gorkha soldiers use to come to houses of farmers and live in house while family was forced to live in open cold, Tax on marriage, tax on food grains, land tax so harsh people left homes and moved to other states while remaining population have to pay for neighbours tax. Brutal judiciary which included poisoning person and if he survived he was pardoned if not he was guilty, drowning only male child of family if he survived the family was allowed less tax when boy drowned they were guilty of crimes and sold into slavery. Gukhani rule was so brutal when Britishers won against Gurkha military rulers , Kumaoni and Garhwali people thanked the Britishers for saving them. Read about what all atrocities Gurkha military dictators Amar Singh Thapa,Bamshah commited in Kumaon and Garhwal Uttarakhand. It will tremble your heart with anger. There is a reason Indian army have recruited from Nepal from its inception in 1947. There is a reason that the Britishers who had ruled over all groups of people of the world decided to recruit from Nepal and still do. Only from Nepal. There is a reason China wants to recruit from Nepal. They are the best, the toughest and thoroughly professional soldiers.

@@abhishekjoshi4648 Nepal has always been an independent country. Communist party in Nepal is a very recent phenomenon. Nepal has been an independent country even when ruled by Hindu kings. Current India has been in existence since 1947. Before that, this land was ruled by Britishers, Mughals, Afgans for thousands of years. Before that, except for very brief periods, the land was ruled by many different kingdoms. Nepal and current India share a common civilization that we can call Bharat. Other than that, asking why Nepal has not joined India just shows a gross ignorance of reality.

Delhi and North India is not complete India.
Bharat entirely was never ruled except for Britishers.
And Nepal was not sovereign but a vassal of British during British period just like rest of the country.

@@abhishekjoshi4648 Britishers ruled the entirety of India. Afgans and Mughals ruled the northern lands of what is today India. During that period, no one from, say, Nagaland or Assam or Kanyakumari thought that their country was occupied by foreigners because they had nothing to do with Delhi. The Indian subcontinent had always been a collection of multiple independent nations. Today’s India is a political union of those nation states ruled by the Britishers. Nepal, a sovereign nation, had neither desire nor need to join the union. And if you know Nepalese, they have no such desire and I do not see an iota of thing that suggests that it is going to change.
